I don't actually own Logic Express, but I figured this would be a better place to ask my question.
My question is regarding dither.
I understand that dither, when it's all said and done, is simply low-level noise to keep truncated bits from sounding like butt when you reduce the word length of a recording.
Can one, in theory, use any form of consistent noise as a form of a dither signal such as, for example, the gentle hiss of an audio cassette?
I use this particular example because I happen to love the sound of tape hiss.
Also, does one need to dither if the bit depth is never changed/reduced/increased if one if editing between two different audio editing programs? I record my tracks using GarageBand and I mix, finalize, etc. using Pro Tools and I add no type of effect or normalizing or anything other than light automation and tasteful mixing. Do I still need to dither even if my Pro Tools mix-down session is set to 44 kHz/16-bit?

If you're not changing the bit-depth or sampling rate, you do not need to dither.
Dithering adds a very low level noise signal so as to avoid persistent and predicatble rounding problems but it's not the best way of adding hiss to a recording. If I'm doing a sound effect (perhaps a cassette playing back in a TV scene), I go to my stock library and find cassette tape hiss and add it to the mix (as a separate track). You could just add white noise with a band pass filter with quite high centre but it's not the same - it's just too random.

José, if you buy and download Logic Pro in App Store now, the best option would be to buy an upgrade to Logic Studio. I don't think Jam Packs are available any more in Apple Store, besides it will be more expensive buying them one by one than upgrading to Studio.

No Audio from Logic Express

I was using an outdated sound card in my Mac G4, I was only hearing sounds out of the little built in Mac speaker, I was told I needed an Audio Interface, so I got a fast track USB pro from M-Audio. Installed everything, now the Mac recognizes it because I was able to switch the "built in Audio" to "Fast Track USB". Even his the "test" button and it works. I now select a sound from the esx24 sample player, and before, i could only hear sound from the built in mac speaker, now however, nothing plays. I see the meter going in logic and it is recignizing the midi input notes but still no Audio sound. This leads me to believe its something within Logic Express 7.2. Can anyone throw out any suggestions?

When you switched from "built in audio" to "fast Track" that must have been in the Audio Midi setup of the utilities folder?
You have to do it in Logic as well places.
In case you haven't done that in Logic I will go through the steps.
Inside Logic go to the Audio menu at the very top (not the smaller audio on the arrange screen), then Audio Hardware and Drivers, then you will see the tab for drivers there and should be pretty much the same as you did before. Fast Track should show up there. Notice you can also set the buffer size here as well as a tab for 24 bit recording. Or at least you can in Logic Pro. I don't actually have Logic Express, but I know your issue is were it is in LP.

Logic Studio 2.0 purchased off Ebay... came with Logic Express 9 upgrade instead of full version, serial works to unlock registration but seems wrong and perhaps a loophole. What should I do?

I purchased what was advertised as a Full Version of Logic Studio 2 off ebay. It ended up being Logic Studio Pro 2 Upgrade and came with a copy of Logic Express 9 upgrade which did unlock the installation. I didn't realize it was the upgrade version til I saw the sticker in the upright corner of the box post installation. I feel like this is a loophole and not a legitimate installation now. Is this legit or should I acquire a full copy of Logic Express? The seller continously tells me that it's 100% legal and legit, etc.. I have already demanded he should send me or reimburse me enough to acquire a legitimate copy of Logic Express that supports the upgrade. Am I right in doing so? Or is it okay to use the Logic Express 9 upgrade copy to upgrade to Logic Studio Pro 2? Doesn't seem right. I'm very confused and would love some advice. Thank you in advance.

The Logic Express 9 upgrade package requires you should own Logic Express 8 Full.... for that to be a legal use of the Logic Express 9 upgrade serial which then you could use to register LP9/Logic Studio 2.0 upgrade package using the LS2.0 upgrade serial..
This is an apparent loophole, in my opinion, that is being exploited by the seller....
However, when in any doubt with anything regarding possible legal issues... contact Apple directly and ask them for their advice/opinion on the matter.

Logic express does not start up

Today I have updated to Lion.
After the update I tried to start my logic express program (version 8.0.2).
Nothing happen. I tried to start up logic express using the terminal. THis is the output:
MacBook-BC:etc beert$ open /Applications/Logic\ Express.app
LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -10664 for the file /Applications/Logic Express.app.
What's going on? Can it be repaired, can I fall back to leopard?

I'm really disappointed with Apple on this one. I've only owned Logic Express 8 for 2 months and I paid for it fair and square. I've just bought some softsynths to use with it too and now I'm worrying about their compatibility with the whole thing.
I managed to get it run with the command that bch2 posted and that's great, but what I don't understand is if it runs like this, why can't it just run from the dock or app icon as normal? It all just seems like a way of making people buy the latest version.
Anyway, I'm trying to restrain myself from ranting on about Lion and what a mistake I've made .
Thanks for the command bch2, at least I can make my paid-for programme work for a bit longer now before I'm forced to fork out for the latest version.

Increasing the Volume of a Garageband Recording in Logic Express 8

I'm new to Logic Express, but I'd like to use it to increase the volume of a multi-track recording that I made in Garageband. (Of course, there may be a way to increase the volume of the recording IN Garageband; however, if so, I don't know how to go beyond the 6 db level that seems to be the max for each track.) Here's what I tried to do: I imported the mixed-down, AIFF audio file that I made in Garageband into Logic Express and then I pushed the master volume slider to the maximum. I then saved and exported the file from Logic Express as another AIFF file (with a different file name, of course), thinking that the new recording would be louder. It wasn't. Any idea what I might try next? Thanks in advance for any help.

I've found an answer to my own question. I simply imported the recording that I made in Garageband into a new Garageband file and then turned up the volume. I'd still like to know how to do this in Logic Express, though, since I'd like to move to that more sophisticated program.

Dear fellow musicians, I plan to buy Logic Express, but as I live in a country you probably have never heard of (Moldova) I only have the chance to buy it while traveling.
So, I am going to Paris soon and this is a perfect occasion to purchase the software - the only thing I am concerned is whether the french version of Logic express also supports the English language just like garage band and other apple apps.
So, could you please check what languages are supported by Logic Express?
It is simple to do - just go to the applications folder, Ctrl click on the Logic Express 8 application and unfold the languages triangle (if there's any).
I'd be more than lucky if someone owning a french version does that to confirm whether there's English among the supported languages.

checked in my application folder but I don't see the languages option. However my English version provides French support, and my pretty clued up about apple things guess (but it is a guess) is that it's the same package and the installer just picks up the default language of the machine you're installing it on. And if you've got experience of other French versions of apple software being OK then it's a pretty safe bet that Logic will too. Can you not order an English version over the internet if you're really concerned ?
By the way, I know where Moldova is! Even been thinking about traveling there sometime soon

Can logic express be used as a sequencer?

Looking into buying some music production software, so want to know if logic exprees can be used as a sequencer.

If you are really serious about music production in a professional way, don't bother with Logic Express and get Logic Pro.
I would dispute that, but of course YMMV

I'd say go for Express in the first instance, and upgrade later if there's something that you really need (final cost will be the same IIRC, so there's nothing lost!)

LOGIC EXPRESS OR ABELTON LIVE

I know, I know this is a Logic forum but i couldnt resist. I have Logic Express & Abelton Live 5 on my computer. I like both but IMO, i like the ease of Abelton Live. I like Logic Express but it seems like i have to do 3-4 steps just to complete 1. With Abelton everything is straigh forward. Just my opinion but was curious on what you guys think, thanks!

As I say, if one's not willing to delve into the details and expliot the precision of Logic, then it's perfectly fine to use easier apps.
Some want the ease of a basic set-up and aren't enamored with doing the study to become proficient with an advanced musical tool. That's why I still use GB. Sometimes I'm just doing "rough sketches" and GB is simple and good for that.
Othertimes I demand the depth Logic offers. Some folks just can't handle the Logic interface. I admit, until I knew using the program wasn't easy. now, it's no problem. AND the app still exceeds my needs, so I can keep going deeper into it. With a GB or similar software I can quickly hit the top end of the app's capabilities when I do more advanced work.
Depends on you needs and desires.
If you don't like the effort it takes, then use the basic stuff. The thing is, once you learn to manipulate the tools of Logic it encourages creativity. At least that's been my experience.

Logic Express Trial version

I am looking for the *Logic Express Trial version* since certain time with no luck.
Does anybody know how we can have a demo version?
I was using Cubase SX before and now I would like to switch to Logic Express,but no where on line could not find any demo version.
Most of the software in the market have a Trial version but not for LE 7 or LE8.Shame...
Any info would be appreciated.

I believe back in 2005 there was a free trial version of Logic Express 7, but I don't see anything available at the moment for either 7 or 8. So, yes, that means you buy before you try, unfortunately.
Having said that I must add that I picked up Logic Express 8 a few weeks ago and I love it. I've never used Logic before so the price cut and all the added plugs and instruments made this deal too good for me to pass up.

Logic Studio vs. Logic Express

Has Apple posted a chart comparing Logic Studio (or Logic 8) and Logic Express 8? I own Logic Express 7 and will have to make an upgrade choice. Of course, I want to step up to the big system but I'd like to see some kind feature-by-feature comparison (e.g., the Web site says that Logic 8 comes with 18,000 Apple Loops, Logic Express 8 with "thousands"; so would that be eighteen "thousands," or, I dunno, three?) before deciding to part with the extra $200, especially since Soundtrack Pro really does nothing that I need.

Sell Logic Express - Registration, Serial-No. - What to do?

Hi,
since I have Logic Pro (no update from express, full license) I don't need my logic express no more.
I want to sell it. Are there any problems because of the registration, serial no. etc.?
I don't think that I've ever registered my Logic Express with my name, but I think that I had to type in my serial no. first time I installed it.
I already contact apple several times with this question but unfortunately with no response.
Does anybody know about this kind of problem? It should be possible to sell software, so that someone else could use it, right?

Dynamic logic expression

Hi Experts,
Iu2019m trying to build a routine with dynamic logical expressions but it's now working...
Basically Iu2019m building a string with the expression, a and after the string it's completed Iu2019m calling a macro that consist in a if.

but the value returned by the macro it's always false, even when the logical expression it's true...
i already tried the logical function BOOLC but apparently my version, ECC 6, doesnu2019t recognize it....

It would be helpful if you show us what is the example content of str_cond .
Anyhow your check looks like you want to compare some condition with value X which abap_true denotes i.e.
if field_1 = 10 and field_2 = 20 EQ 'X'.
endif.
This doesn't make sense for me or maybe I am missing something which is hidden behid this str_cond . Your left hand side expression value must however be equal to right hand side value. So the conditon will only be true if
if 'X' = 'X'.
endif.

PS: please note that in ABAP there is no real boolean value, so you can't have condition like in JAVA or C

Garageband 4.1.2 not importing pojects to logic express 7.2

i used to be able to import GB projects into logic express but now all I get is a message saying that I need to update logic express I presume the latest GB version doesn't support LE 7.2
Is there any fix for this?

Hi, now i can't remember the format of audio files. but occurs the next:
When i open the project Logic Express 7.2.1 it doesn't find the audio files, asking me to Ignore, Search automatically or Manually, i click Manually and i open the project folder but files can not be selected, its icon is grey, like EXE files from PC opened in Mac.
I'm sure it's not WAV or AIFF but if they were SD2 i could open them.
The only solution i find is opening the project on Logic Pro 6 and Bounce every track separately (bassdrum song 01, cymbal song 04 etc...) as AIFF file. It will take me the whole day so...there is a solution????

Can't open a garage band song in logic express trial

I've been thinking about getting logic express, but I wanted to try the trail version first. When I try to open any of my garageband songs in logic it says, "Damaged Song or not a logic express song! Damaged songs might create problems and crashes!" After that box it says, "Rad Error! This is not a Logic Express song!" I would appreciate any advice on how I might fix this problem.

I'm not using a different user account than previously, and haven't moved anything. That said, I was able to solve the problem. Here's what I did:
1. Right-click and select GET INFO
2. In the INFO window, open the SHARING & PERMISSIONS panel at the bottom
3. In the lower right corner, click the LOCK to change it to UNLOCKED
4. In the pop-up PASSWORD window, enter your MAC password. The LOCK changes to UNLOCKED.
5. Click the PLUS SIGN lower left, choose the appropriate Person or User/Group (me) and click SELECT
6. The name gets added to the bottom of the GET INFO window, but with “Read only” permission
7. Click the “Read Only” selection and change to “Read & Write”
PARTIAL SUCCESS: The PROHIBIT badge is gone from the file, and instead of showing ZERO bytes, it now shows XXMB — for example, 32MB.
HOWEVER, when I tried to open the file, I got the message, “Your file has no content”.
TOTAL SUCCESS: I discovered that I had to go back a level, click on the FOLDER that contained my prohibited songs, and follow the same instructions 1-7 above. Now, at last, I can access my files in the new GarageBand!
