I don't get tones when a message arrives

For some reason I no longer hear a tone when a message arrives on my iPhone 5. Occasionally I do get a tone, but usually not - any suggestions?

Check to make sure you do not have the 'Do Not Disturb' feature turned on. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and make sure the crescent-shaped moon icon is not highlighted. If so, turn it off. Make sure you do not have your phone set to vibrate and that your volume is loud enough to hear the tone alert.

It sounds like you are not getting notified when recieving a text message on your phone. I recommend starting by verifying that Messages is set up for notifications with:
Check Settings > Notification Center to ensure that the app is configured for notifications. If notifications do not appear in the Notification Center, verify that the Notification Center setting for the app is enabled.

I'm not sure I understand the question, is the message tone going more then once?
Turn off repeat message alert here:
settings > notifications > messages > repeat alert > never
Some people have found this does not stop the repeat miessage tone,
if you are one of those then I suggest you contact Apple:

I opened Google Chat in a tab and pinned it as an App Tab, but the App Tab does not "glow" when new message arrives in Google Chat.

I am running Firefox 4.0.
I opened this page for Google Talk (http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/client), signed in, and initiated a chat with one of my contacts.
Then, I pinned the tab (containing the above chat page) as an App Tab.
According to the documentation for Firefox 4, when the contents of an App Tab's page is changed, the corresponding tab is highlighted.
However, when a new chat message arrives in the Google Talk page (that corresponds to the pinned App Tab), the tab is not highlighted.
App Tab highlighting works for Gmail, and other web pages (i.e., when other web pages are pinned as App Tabs the corresponding tab is highlighted when the contents of the page changes), but App Tab highlighting does not work for the Google Talk page. Is this a bug in Firefox 4?

@cor-el: I think you are correct ... App Tabs do not glow when the content of the page changes (which would result in the tab "glowing" when a new Google Talk message arrived) ... but App Tabs only glow when the tab title changes.
I thought about writing a java script (to be used with greasemonkey) to change the tab title when a new message arrives in the Google Talk page .... but the Google Talk page looks like it's Adobe Flash.
I know that there is a "beep" when a chat message arrives, but I wanted some kind of visual notification (like the glowing App Tab) when a message arrives (because my computer is playing music and I don't hear the "beep" when a message arrives).
Any suggestions for getting a visual notification when new Google Talk chat message arrives?

Think you need to again get the device inspected by Nokia Care..but before that first back-up all your important data and try a Factory Reset ( Menu-->Settings-->General-->Factory settings... followed by 12345 (Default code unless set by you) when prompted. If that doesn't work..dial *#7370# followed by the code as above. Be warned that this will erase all data from the phone memory ...

Can I use Messages in OSX to text with a person on an Android platform? My iPhone works cross platform but I don't get the text in Messages on my desktop with OSX 10.8.2

Does "Messages" in OSX 10.8.2 work cross platform? My daughter has an android phone and I can text with her OK in iOS. However, her texts don't show up on OSX whereas texts from my son, who has an iPhone, work in iOS and OSX.

The answer is yes and no.
As Barney-15E link says you can get the Messages app to SMS to AIM Buddies. Or rather telephone Numbers as AIM Buddies.
There are limits.
The computer has to be set as if in the United States (System Preferences > Language and Text > Region)
The phone is question has to be on a carrier that supports AIM SMS forwarding which only applies to some US based carriers.
The reason the SMS Messages arriving on the iPhone do not sync is that they are not iMessages (the "No" Part).
I use Messages with the Buddy List Showing.
As a test I have added a made up number as a Buddy and also created a Address Card for it.
So Mousing over the "Buddy" reveal the "Screen Name" which is the phone Number
You have to include the Leading +1 country code as well.

Slow Mac? Getting tons of console messages like "ALSPlugin Failed to get brightness -"

I keep getting the same message over and over about 5-10 times per second:
--> ALSPlugin 235.55[46]: Failed to get brightness for displayID 0x04272140
It seems to slow my Mac OS X 10.8 down. I could not find a solution nor anything helpful on the web about any of the keywords. I consider myself pretty tech savvy.
Disconnecting the secondary screen does not help.
Closing Safari does not help.
Closing Mail.app does not help.
Closing Growl does not help.
I have no idea...

Lost quick reply text when new message arrived

I was typing a quick reply to a notification of an iMessage message when a new message arrived. The notification for that message was immediately displayed, losing the text of my reply.
Is this normal? Should I report it as a bug?

I don't get a completed import message.

Hi, so i have been doing a ton of importing lastely, and i don;t think the system is having a problem importing, while slow, my issue is that if i keep an import to around 400 records, it will complete, but the page that shows that loading circle, never refreshes to say import complete..
I can only check by looking at the web app total before import, then after 8 minutes (seems to take about 8 minutes for 400 records) i'll open the webapp page in a new tab to check and see if the new total is 800, then i know its done, meanwhile the initial page where i started the import, still shows the spinning.
This is very time consuming, and scary becuase I am never certain the import is complete.
I've tried all browsers, ff ie chr saf, on both my desktop and laptop, even on my android tablet on 4g.
I imported 8 files of 400 each, they all end up working using that method of checking totals in a new tab, but only 2 actually completed and showed me a import success message.
I have a huge import coming up (65k), and am not looking forward to somewhat guessing in between imports if they completed. Are there any browser tweaks to help this, or alternate import methods to try?

Hopefully, when the dev team starts improvements to this part of the system, you'll be able to FTP or use the file manager to uplaod the fiel you wish to import, into _System folder, and then log in to admin and select the file for upload. This will do a quick check for validity and then it will push this process into background and tell you to get a coffee and look out for the email notification when it's done. Same with exports. You setup the export and wait for the notification with the link to a file. The file is saved inside the _System folder and you can FTP down from the server. That way we wouldn't have to load these huge data sets into memory, but simply have a process that goes line by line and reads or writes to a file. Wouldn't that be nice
This is just my thoughts on how we could handle this stuff. It doesn't mean that the dev team will take this approach.
Anyway, I'm sorry Rich, but I don't have a sollution for you at this stage.

Printed photos from Aperture 3.2.1 have lines through them - don't get that when printing from iPhoto

I recently downloaded Aperture 3.2.1 and after editing a couple photos (love that process!), tried to print them. Both had horizontal lines across the entire photo. I don't have this problem when printing from iPhoto.
As an FYI, I have this problem when printing from PSE too, but worked around it by importing edited photo back into iPhoto and printing from there. I don't want to do that with Aperture, because they have much better printing choices.
I have a Canon MP 500 & a Canon IP 4300 - same issue with either one.
I contacted Canon tech support and got this reply:
We appreciate your correspondence regarding your PIXMA MP500. I am sorry that lines are printing through photos printed from aperture.
If aperture is the only program the issue occurs with then the print setting in aperture will need to be changed. You will need to use the icc profiles for the paper you are using. I looked at the link and basically had a brain freeze. It was very complex, and I was concerned that it was for Red River papers - I use HP paper.
I called HP to get their instructions for icc color printer profiles - complete zero. They said it's a printer issue and would be happy to sell me a HP printer.
Please, can anyone help a struggling Aperture newbie? I'm so frustrated.

Your recap is correct. I ran Apple Software Update and both programs are up to date. I looked on Canon's site and there are no new firmware updates for either printer.
When I select "print" in Aperture, I've selected the Canon MP500. Under the "Rendering" section, the color profile offers six different selections that include the MP500. I've tried them all. They all have lines through them. There is a note, in grey, beneath the Color Profile box, that says to "Turn off color management in the printer driver". I have absolutely no idea how to do that, and I've googled it, to no avail
Under "Render Intent" I've tried both selections - Relative Colorimetric and Perceptual. Still, lines through both.
This is really discouraging. Both printers work perfectly fine - with iPhoto, so it's hard for me to justify buying a new printer. And how do I know I wouldn't have the same problem with a new printer?
Fingers crossed that this can be resolved. I have several photos I'm supposed to be printing for gifts. And if the problem is in Aperture or PSE, won't the lines still be there even if I use one of the online printing companies?

Hi, Doug.
I would recommend closing any open applications in multitasking and restarting the device. If unfamiliar with multitasking, I have included a screenshot on how to process an application close. Test the results after processing these steps.
If the issue persists, make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not switched to silent. Also, make sure there is an assigned tone to messages under Settings > Sounds.
