Why do my dvds that i made in dvd studio pro don't work in a dvd player or a windows computer? I tried everything, and I watched so many tutorials after not succeeding. I read in another forum that it is common. Please help. I have already used about 20 discs trying to figure out what is wrong.

If you don't have a SuperDrive you will not be able to burn DVDs.
Did iDVD come preinstalled on your Mac?  If it did then you should have a SuperDrive and be able to burn DVDS. Check the Disk Burning section of System Information
to see what you can read and write with your optical drive:

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • Just bought an apple iMac went to import music cd only to discover it doesn't have a cd/DVD player can't find any on the apple site what do I need to buy to import cd into ITunes

Get the Apple USB Superdrive. It is available on the Apple store page of the Apple web site. Just look under storage on the left hand column under accessories for the Mac.  $79.  I have one since I have a lot of DVD's and CD' s. I burn DVD's made from movies created with iMovie.  Works fine. You may be able to find one cheaper at Other World Computing.
BTW, you can expect that future computers will not have optical disk drives. This is definitely true for Apple and I suspect other mfgrs will also as we move more into streaming video and downloading of apps rather than selling CD/DVD versions.

  • How to put a .mov file on a dvd using lion and have a commercial DVD player play my movie? iDVD is gone.  I never had it.

I have found a lot of frustration around this topic but no answers.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X Version 10.7.4.
I have a video I made with iMovie.  I want to burn it to a DVD for commercial DVD playback.  It's as simple as that.
    Things I've tried.
    1. Using iMovie, I saved an HD version of the project to my desktop as a .MOV file.  I know I can just burn that to a DVD.  It won't play.  I need a utility/program to put the necessary files on the DVD so a commercial namebrand DVD player will have what it needs.
    2. I heard iDVD used to do this but it's not on my MacBook Pro (Lion OS).  I've researched things like "What replaced iDVD" but found nothing but a but of complaining.  (and I can see why).
    3. I have looked for freeware.  It all looks fishy.
    Other options I'm looking into.
Use my Mac and connect a cable to the big TV screen.  Play the movie using this screen as a secondary monitor.  Problem - I have a dozen cables but none for this combo.
Move the .MOV file to a PC and play it using QuickTime.  The cables I have will work for a PC to TV.  Sad option.

Have you tried...     Burn 2.5.1 (FREE)

  • Does the new thin iMac have a cd/DVD player

My friends say they just bought a new iMac and it has no cd/DVD player. I's this true? How do you watch a movie or download music?

No it does not. But you can use any external DVd drive that connects by USB with it. Mosy cost around $30US.
It does not have to be sold by or have the Apple name on it to work with any Mac, even the newest models.

  • HD-DVD don't Play on Apple DVD Player

My Business is HD-DVD for Software training.
but, my client complain for about 3 month ago because that HD-DVD (4.7GB) can't play on Mac ( apple DVD Player 5.5 )
first time, we try HVTS folder drop into Apple DVD Player. OK.
    but about 10 minute. stop.
Apple DVD Player bug pix please.
we can wait Apple's develope, but our client can't wait Apple's unbalance develope.
    ( FCPX,MOTN5 just up, the other ??? )

The HD-DVD format was abandoned back in 2008.
Apple has abandoned DVD Studio Pro.
If your HD-DVD media is working on a Mac it is a fortunate happenstance.
I would not expect anything related to HD-DVD to be updated, fixed, or improved in any way, shape, or form.
Blu-Ray is the only way to deliver HD video on some sort of disc. There are ways to do this through Compressor but for any sort of control over authoring you would have to look at a non-Mac piece of software.

  • Chapter markers don't work on a DVD player

I have burned multiple copies of a DVD from iDVD. I checked everything and each menu works fine on my imac. However when I put it in any dvd player and try to go to the separate chapters it freezes and nothing happens. Only in the chapters though. I can play the movie fine and go into special features. I just can't jump to different scenes in the movie. Can anyone give me any help or pointers please?

I have an experience that I burned a disk with chapters working.....then added music...burned the same project again and the chapters would not work anymore.
So it might be, that the music in the menu causes some problem.
I also look for a solution...I want to burn menus WITH music AND menus that work

  • DVD's don't play on home DVD player?

I have had 100% success burning DVD's with DVD studio pro until now. I can't burn a DVD and have it play on a home DVD player but it plays on the computer fine? If I take the compressor files and move them to my macbook and use that DVD studio pro it works. Is there a setting I messed up accidentally?

    Jim,
Bitrate   ? would that be on DVD SP settings? Note that when I transfer my audio and video files from compressor on a zip drive and install them in my laptop and burn using DVD SP it works fine.  Burning on my Mac Pro desktop I can only view the DVDs on the computer?  Where can I check the bitrate settings
    thanks

  • Don't have the original DVD for my laptop

  • Don't have Apple original DVD drive. Now install disks won't boot. What????

The past 3-4 hours, I have tried installing 10.5 (first) 10.4 (as 10.5 failed) from original discs in perfect shape without success.
After seraching help on the net, it seems as if Apple in its incomprehensive wisom is blocking such attempts if the user has been illoyal enough to purchase and install a non-Apple driver.
    At http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2956 Apple says:
"Is this this original optical drive? If you have issues, make sure you're using the original Apple optical drive that was included with your computer (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, CD-RW, Combo drive or Super Drive). This is only a concern in three scenarios: if you have replaced your original Apple drive with a non-Apple drive, if you have added a non-Apple drive to the second bay of a Power Mac G4 model with two drive bays, or if you are attempting to install from an external drive."
No, I bought a Pioneer DVD driver (yes, it reads DL). So does that really mean that I cannot make a new installation? And if so, are there any workarounds?

Yes, it shows and mounts. What happens is this:
When trying the "normal" way: inserts the disk, it mounts and opens a window. I click button "install". Computer restarts, starts reading the DVD, but after 10 seconds, it spits it out from the DVD driver and boots from regular system, already installed on hard drive.
When selecting the installation disc from the Startup Disks in the system preferences: Computer restarts, starts reading the DVD, but after 10 seconds, it spits it out from the DVD driver and boots from regular system, already installed on hard drive.
When booting with C key down: starts reading the DVD, but after 10 seconds, it spits it out from the DVD driver and boots from regular system, already installed on hard drive.
When trying Opt key down on boot: starts reading the DVD, but after 10 seconds, it spits it out from the DVD driver and only optional system remaining to boot from is the regular system on the hard drive.

  • Anyone else have problem with DVD player not working since 10.7.4 update

Tried to put digital copy of movie onto computer last night and kept getting error message about the disc wasn't supported. So tried one I already have on my computer and got same message. This is first time I've tried doing this since I updated. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

FWIW, my mighty mouse works w/o issues. See these:

  • MacBook as upconverting DVD player

Does a MacBook - connected directly to a plasma HDTV - offer any advantage over a regular DVD player?
I couldn't find much on this topic so I tested it myself and found my MacBook is an excellent DVD player. I don't have an upconverting DVD player to compare to, but I can say the MacBook (FrontRow player in Leopard) is far superior to my progressive scan Toshiba SD-3750 DVD player (component connections), which isn't bad. I suspect the direct digital connection to my Panasonic 50" plasma accounts for most of the gain - no D to A to D conversions. Not sure whether the Mac or the panny does the upconversion, but the result is very good.
Now, I don't know if I want to hook up my laptop every time I rent a DVD, but it'll be hard to watch the old Toshiba player now that I've seen the light.

    Macaby wrote:
I played on DVD from my MacBook to my LCD and it did work great. However, the downside of doing so is just not worth it in my opinion.
    1. Cord problem. Necessary to hookup cords to TV to do so.
    2. Perhaps unsafe layouts as to where to place MacBook. Due to cord length, I had to balance my MacBook on a chair and hope is stayed there.
    3. Wear and tear on DVD player in laptop. From reading several posts on this site, there seems to be a problem of DVD malfunctions due to perhaps excessive play.
    4. Economics, there are several up-conversion DVD players on the market for well less than $100. I recently bought one at Costco for about $40 and it seems to do a great job and plays everything I throw at it including stuff I burn, some of which, my MacBook DVD player won't play.
    5. Ease of use in having a DVD player ready to go at a moments notice without going through the hoops of connecting a MacBook.
    6. And the biggest reason, I don't have to worry about a DVD getting stuck in my MacBook. From time to time, I had DVD's and CD's get stuck in desktop optical drives. At least when it happens there, they have a tiny hole that will eject the tray manually when poked with a paperclip.
    1. I use my MacBook's "extension" cord left in place near the TV, and use only the brick for most day-to-day stuff. I also have a DVI-HDMI cable just for this purpose, with the Apple adapter, also in place. Worst thing is I have to borrow the audio cables from the regular DVD player. Going to optical cables soon, so even this will be easy.
    2. Yes, perching on anything isn't good. I have a handy spot on the floor that's out of the way.
    3. My biggest qualm. I don't use the drive for much else and frankly don't watch many movies, so I'm not too worried. But agreed it's not a good permanent installation. I guess a cheap external DVD drive is an option. More cables though!
    4. I've been wondering how good a job they do, whether they're a scam or not. Do the cheap ones really beat an older progressive-scan DVD player? Maybe with the HDMI (all digital) connection they do. Also considering a PS3, and that's what got me thinking in the first place. Seems like PS3 = AppleTV+Blu-Ray player+gaming.
    5. No question, but see #1. I only started doing this to watch Lost in HD streaming - something not possible with a DVD player - and then I got intrigued by the whole HD and Blu-ray movie thing.
    6. Whew, this hasn't happened yet, knock on wood. My daughter managed to squish her MacBook so that the slot narrowed and that caused some trouble but otherwise I haven't had one get stuck.
