I don't have a startup disk

Okay so my MacBook will not turn on. It is at a grey screen with no apple logo or anything. Just a blank screen. I hold down the option key so it brings me to internet recovery . After that it gives me options like reinstall OS X, restore from time machine, and disk utility  , well when I try any of them they tell me to pick a disk to download to and I have no disk. It says to download to startup disk, but I don't have one. Please help I don't know what to do!

cateapiller19,
when you select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities menu in Internet Recovery, which disks are shown on the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window?

    Erasing your drive:
Dragging the files to the Trash removes the references to them from the Directory. As has always been the tradition, the data blocks that held the actual data are not over-written, they are merely added to the free list for later re-use. Their original contents are still present.
Disk Utility "Erase" or "Partition" of a drive (which finishes in under a minute) also does not over-write the data blocks, but merely creates a new, empty directory.
To clear the data that may still be present (admittedly in a disorganized mess of unlinked blocks) you need to overwrite the data. Use the erase tab, then choose "Security Erase" Options, and overwrite once with Zeroes. This process can take several hours as it is -- if you insist on multiple passes, it can take days to complete, with little additional protection. Multiple passes is unnecessary unless your drive held Military Secrets.
When you have erased, be sure to install some version of Mac OS X -- a Mac with no obvious Operating software may be dead, and  is much more likely to quickly become landfill.

  • How would i reset my macbook pro if i don't have the Install Disk?

I forgot the password to the admin, but I'm still able to use my laptop because I have two users but I can't use the admin. I don't have the Install Disk, so the instructions that they're giving me in order to reset the password I'm unable to do. So how would reset the password or just reset my laptop in all without the Install Disk ?

This usually happens when you had/ have a newer Adobe product like a trial on the system and it points to updated install components. You will have to uninstall each and every bit of Adobe software and then reinstall in the proper order. Running the cleaner tool may also be required.

  • TS1440 If I don't have my startup discs can I not fix this myself?

My iMac starts up with a flashing question mark within a folder. I've seen many threads about this issue but my question is, if I don't have my startup discs can I not fix this myself?

Do you know if you had Firmware Password protection setup?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
    Force Removing Password Protection
    1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.
    2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).

Inserted a new hard drive into my Mac Boo Pro 2008 15 inch and don't have the original disks. Wondering if there was a way to purchase them from Apple or if I buy them off ebay will they work? Also its A Macbook Pro 2008 15 inch glossy with 2GB of Ram the serial number is worn off what kind OS do I need?

Wondering if there was a way to purchase them from Apple
Yes. Contact Apple Support using one of the options in the Contact Us below. You will need your MBP's serial number and payment method for a nominal fee. If the exterior serial number is illegible look elsewhere for it: MacBook Pro: How to find the serial number
or if I buy them off ebay will they work?
Probably not. Grey discs are system-specific and will work only for the exact model MBP with which they shipped. It's likely that Apple will charge you less money, and it will be guaranteed to work.

  • How to repair corrupted Macbook Pro hard disk when I don't have a startup disc provided by Apple

So my MBP was really making horrible clicking noise and I figured out that my start up Lion OSX disk partition is corrupted.
I have three partitions. One for Lion OS X, another for Documents and another for Movies and Downloads. When I run disk utility and verify other two partitions(documents and movies/downloads), they appear to be okay but when I do the same with Lion OS X then it says:
The volume Lion OS X was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired....then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
Is my hard drive gonna die soon? Or will it be okay if I just format my 500gb hard drive completely and install the fresh copy of Lion OS X again? I don't have a recovery disc or what so ever provided by Apple anymore. I have a DMG installation file of Lion OS X and a USB flash drive(4 GB approx). How can I repair the disk partition without the recovery start up disc?
Please help me, I am really worried.

Hmmm idk if it's the clicking noise or not but it is making a noise of course. Sounds like hmmm few old desktops that makes weird loud  noise for the first 20 seconds they boot up.
I am still unsure if it needs to be changed because the other two volumes appear to be okay. Why only this one? I have already saved all of my data in an external hard drive but it's weird how my 10 year old desktop is running on a same hard drive and my 3 years old 3000$ laptop had it's optical drive replaced, dead pixels, trackpad problem and now hard drive when I take care of my laptops like my baby and more over I don't even travel with it, it is always sitting on my desk like a desktop.

  • HT1750 i decide to upgrade to the OS X Mavericks not realizing I don't have enough hard disk space and now I cant do anything. How do I revert to the previous version to make more space on the HD?

I decided to upgrade to OS X Mavericks not realizing I don't have enough HD space. Now I cannot do anything with the upgrade. How can I revert to the previous OS X to free up more space on the HD?

You can't. It's already downloaded and filled the drive. The only option is to erase and reinstall.
You may be able to Target Disk Mode if you can connect the Mac to another with FireWire or Thunderbolt Cables (USB will not work and it cannot be connected to a windows PC)
Do you have a Time Machine Backup?
If not best option is getting it in somewhere where they can transfer the data you need off before Erase and Reinstalling OS.
Unless there is nothing on the Machine you need anymore that is, in which case you may be able to Erase in Recovery. It May not work though, if the Disk is too full.

  • I have repaired startup disk in disk utility but still get message saying startup disk needs repair, help.

I am on a macbook pro running the latest version of yosemite. I was going to use Onyx to clean it, but I got a message stating that my startup disk needs repair. I command R went to disk utility to verify and repair and the disk was fine. However, I still get the same message when using Onyx. What should I do? Should I command R and reinstall? Will the fact that my startup disk needs repair cause a problem?

Thank you @EricRoot, I think you may be correct. I don't get that message with other programs. However, I did locate files on my computer taking up way too much space...

  • Volumes don't appear in startup disk pane in System Preferences

I have 10.3 on one volume of the original 120 G ATA hard drive. The machine boots fine from that. I have 9.1 and 8.5 on a volume on a 160 G hard drive I just added. Most files and applications all work fine from that drive. Only the volume with 10.3 appears in the startup disk pane in system preferences, except for a network icon. It even took several attempts to have that pane show up the Jaguar CD I put in. Why does the other volume with an OS on it not show up in that pane?
    Your help is much appreciated!
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
"Why does the other volume with an OS on it not show up in that pane?"
Because your computer cannot boot into OS 8 or OS 9 natively and therefore does not even offer it as a boot-system: Macintosh: Some Computers Only Start Up in Mac OS X

  • Want to erase HD but don't have start-up disk

I'm in Disk Utility, have selected the disk on left but Volume Format dropdown and Erase buttons are greyed out so I cannot complete the erase function.
I've noted similar questions that direct the user to boot from the start-up disk but I cannot find mine :-(
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

  • I have been working around proI am advised to reinstall Lion. I don't have a recovery disk, I downloaded it but screwed up making the disk. Can anyone tell me how to get this.

I have had a number of problems since installing Lion on my iMac and am going to try reinstalling. I can't seem to find the recovery disk material from the App store. I downloaded it but think I should have copied the disk image rather than trying to open it as an App. You live and learn eh!
Will someone tell me how to get this.

The Lion Recovery disk is accessed by booting while holding down the command-r keys. To do a reinstall you do need an internet connection.

  • Just upgraded my OS from the app store, so I don't have the actual disk. What do I do if my hard drive crashes (again) and I have to reinstall the OS?

The hard drive on my computer crashed a couple of weeks ago, so I had to re-install the old OS from the CD that came with my computer almost four years ago. After dealing with all that, I decided to upgrade to OS 10.8.4 and purchased the upgrade from the app store. And then about 20 minutes later I made the realization that hey, if this happens again, I don't have an actual disc to reinstall from should my hard drive crash again. I'm planning on getting a new computer once I get my financial aid in September, but it would be just my luck that my hard drive crashes two weeks before I get that, so what should I do to make sure I don't have to re-purchase the upgraded OS?
