I don't have GarageBand :-(

I got my 2006 black Macbook repaired at a local place, and when they installed the software, they didn't install GarageBand, somehow. I own both OS X and OS X Snow Leopard (I know, I'm behind), so I know that I own it. Is there a way to get GarageBand, legally, again? I was going to try installing from my boot disc, but it freezes for much longer than I'm wiling to wait around for, so I need another option.
Thank you.

If you supplied the repair shop with an original install-restore DVD for OS X that shipped with your computer Or an iLife install DVD of the vintage suitable for use with the OS X system they installed in your MacBook, then maybe they'd have put it there. If not and your only Garage Band was on an original install-restore set, then they may have used a system installer they had on hand. You don't really say enough there to speculate further.
You could check a special utility from Charlesoft by the name Pacifist, it can extract applications or other software from an installer DVD without using the installer on the DVD; this then takes those parts and can install the software or application you want from the Mac OS X desktop. Pacifist runs in a demo mode but is shareware, the product is from its maker, so it usually works fine. But it is different than one may expect.
If your MacBook is still running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and the computer has a 32-bit processor, the version of Pacifist is the latest one among the vintage versions shown here; for early Intel & also works with PPC: http://www.charlessoft.com/pacifist_olderversions.html
For Macs that run Mac OS X 10.6.8 with 64-bit cpu or Later, the newer version is available here: http://www.charlessoft.com/index.html
Or the other option is to be on the lookout and buy a suitable iLife retail disc set best suited for your Mac and OS X versions.
Good luck!

  • I don't see Garageband now that I have Lion...

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 2 days ago, and it messed up my Macbook Pro (bought new in late 2008).  I couldn't see images or videos in the finder, preview, browser, you name it... When I went to youtube, I would literally see a hole cutout where the video was supposed to be - I could even see the Desktop and icons behind it.  I went to the Genius Bar, and they just told me to clean the hard drive and do a clean install (I kind of knew that was what they were going to say before I even scheduled the appointment).  After clearing the hard drive and installing Snow Leopard, then installing Lion again my computuer works, but iI don't see Garageband, iPhoto...  Any suggestions?

iLife is no part of SL you need the other disk that come with your computer to install ilife or a ilife cd.One thing is the operative system SL or Lion and other ilife applications, iwork etc.DO you have the disks that come with your computer? The one that you didn't use to install SL insert it and bundle apps i think is a folder, anyway ilife inthere..

  • I want to avail the in-app purchase in Garageband, but I don't have a credit card.

Hi everyone! I want to purchase more sounds for GB, but then I don't have any credit card. My sisters do have their own associated with their corresponding apple IDs. But is it alright for me to use either of their apple IDs in order to purchase the app? Or could I just supply the credit card info in my own apple ID's billing info? My only concern is that it's not my name that will be placed in the billing info if I did the latter option.

I don't have a CC linked to my account. I use the iTunes gift cards.

  • I have GarageBand for iPad 2 and noticed that there are far fewer loops for iPad than for apple laptops. Is there a library available of apple loops? I haven't been able to find any if there are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: An Apple rep called me today to update the status of my return. I was told that the replacements for the BLACK iPad 2's was still another 3 weeks out (at least) so they offered me a brand new WHITE 16GB iPad 2. I could have that or continue waiting. I opted to go ahead and accept the offer of a new white one. Worst case scenario if I don't like the white one I have buddy that just bought a 16GB black one that he would be willing to swap it.

  • I have Garageband version 4.1.2 (248.7) installed on my early 2008 IMAC Version 10.5.8. I have never upgraded but have a LOT of projects. If I upgrade my operating system to the next level (10.6?), will my GB version still work? Do I need to upgrade GB?

I have a LOT of projects involved and hope they will transfer. Can I (and should I) upgrade GB at the same time and how far should I go with that without causing a problem with my projects? What would I gain if I upgrade GB? Thanks!

my copy of 4.1.2 appears to work under 10.6.8, though i have not done extensive tests

v4 is pretty lonh in the tooth now, and GB only costs $15, so I'd think it's a good idea

the only version you can buy new is v6,a nd it should open older projects without issue ... however you could keep 4 around:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X doesn't come with iLife applications, so you have to install them manually after installing Mac OS X.
Insert the Applications disc or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 DVD and install iLfe applications. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest update. If you want, you can purchase iMovie, GarageBand and iPhoto in the App Store, so you will get the most recent version

  • Stained palmrest! What if I don't have applecare?

After just a week and a half of use, my MB's palmrest has begun to turn YELLOW. And I'd even taken the precaution of washing my hands religiously before I used it! But the real question is, Can I get it replaced if I don't have Applecare? I mean without spending a boatload of money of course. Tsk. This is a bad first impression for a new mac user.

    MJ,
No problem... I've never purchased AppleCare for any of the Mac's that I've bought and don't have it on my current MacBook's.
    Here's what just happened yesterday;
I called my local Apple Store (you've got a couple in CT) and asked if they could repair the staining problem on both of my MacBook's. They said yes, just book an appointment through the Apple site. I thought very cool. I was a little disappointed because I had to leave my MacBook's overnight but I should be able to pick them up tonight, all the porous plastic parts will be replaced along with the touchpad, no charge.
Plus I learned how to make a podcast with Garageband while I waited - very cool!
PS Here's the link for the Westfarms store:

  • I accidentally deleted my iPhoto a while ago and don't have money to purchase it is there any way to get it back or download it for free?

i accidentally deleted my iPhoto a while ago and don't have money to purchase it is there any way to get it back or download it for free?

Howdid you buy iPhoto originally? Did it come preinstalled on a new macwith MacOS X 10.7 or later? Then you can download it from the Purchased tab of the AppStore:
See:  OS X: About OS X Recovery
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X
If your computer came with OS X Lion or later and you erase your hard disk and install OS X, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
Choose App Store from the Apple menu.
Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.
If your Mac came with an earlier system, reinstall iPhoto from the bundled application installation disk.
And if you bought an iLife disk, use that to reinstall.

  • How come I don't have any plugins for Logic Pro X?

Hi! So, I recently bought and installed Logic Pro X, and I was excited to use the different plugins it had to offer,. But to my surprise, it seems there arent any plugins besides the ones displayed. When I click in the "plugin area" to open it up, all I see is this. Ive been trying to figure out what I did wrong in the installation process. I'm pretty new to the Apple scene, so I'd really appreciate the help .. Thank you! Heres what comes up when I click in the "plugin area". For example, I don't have the EXS24 or any other plugins of that nature. I have no idea what to do.

    Also...
    1) Make sure you have downloaded all the additional content.... via the menu option Logic Pro X/Download Additional Content
    2) Make sure you turn on all the advanced features of LPX by going to the Advanced tab of LPX's preferences.... so LPX isn't running in the "Garageband Pro" mode....

  • I have a 27 in. iMac with the latest version of Snow Leopard. When Lion comes out, will it be software I purchase and download online? I am trying to prepare for cost and don't have a point of reference, having been a Windows guy until last summer.

I want to know what to expect in terms of moving from one OS to another. Having been a Windows guy until last summer, my only experience is going from one version of Windows to another, which is usually a fairly costly purchase. I will want to go to Lion, but as a retired teacher, my income is fixed. I am not looking for a specific price, I am sure that is unknown, but I would just like to know help Apple does these things so I won't be sadly surprised.

Historically Apple has sold OS X upgrades via DVD media however with the advent of the Mac Apple Store that throws another possibility into the mix. That's about as much as I can say as these forums don't allow us to speculate about future products. As for the cost historically Apple has priced OS X upgrades between $29-$129, the last upgrade (Snow Leopard) was only $29 but that was an exception. Again we cannot speculate on these forums about that. The good news is that Apple is unlike Microsoft which makes OS upgrades expensive and complicated. The choice with OS X is do you want a server version (most users don't need one) or a single computer license. The users that buy server versions tend to have a number of Macs they manage from a server, most consumers don't have this issue.
Keep reading the news, as you know Apple has announced a Summer release for Lion.
Upgrades on OS X are usually very simple. I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard and each transition has been very easy. With any major OS upgrade there are some basic rules to follow, for example always, always, always backup prior to any update. When Lion is released to the general public post again for what to do to prepare or even do a Google search on "How to prepare for OS X upgrade" and you will find a number of articles that will provide some suggestions and valuable insight. You can also re-post here and users will be happy to assist.
