I don't know if I should get a MacBook air or iPad 2 help???

Help

The last 2 summers I took an iPad & BlueTooth keypad rather than my MacBookPro to conferences. The first summer was successful enough that I did it again the following summer. The one problem is that there are some things that require hands on the screen which is a bit more cumbersome when you are trying to use the iPad with a keyboard. Also some apps aren't written with keyboards in mind so I wound up replacing one of my apps in the middle of the week which was a bit incovenient.
I now have a MBA and I've already been thinking about this summer. I'm not sure if I'll take just the iPad or just the MBA or both. A Venn diagram for an iPad and computer have a big overlap but significant areas where one or the other is superior. The MBA, being light and so thin takes away some of the iPad advantages.
If writing, using a database or a spreedsheet is an important part of your computer use - the MBA is probably a better choice. If you are more of a content consumer the iPad is a better choice. If you are in the middle - consumer and creator - both is a better idea if you have the cash. MBA if not.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

  • Need help deciding if I should get a Macbook Air?

I should start off by saying that I currently own a 17" Macbook Pro with i5 2.53 GHz Dual Core Processor, 500GB Harddrive, and 4GB of Ram. I mostly use my macbook to go on the internet a lot, check email, and type up a Pages document and do research for school. I do have a couple games on my macbook like X-Plane 9 and I do have about 12 GB of music and 50GB of movies and about 450 Apps (Between iPhone and iPad) in iTunes. However I've recently been looking at getting a Macbook Air more and more. They are small, portable, and seem to be a little easier to handle. I'm just trying to figure out if it would be wise for me to switch? I WANT to sell my macbook pro and get an Air but i'm not sure if i'd still be able to do everything the same on it. I would definitely get the 13.3" with 256GB HD as I have used about 200GB on my current MAcbook Pro. As far as my movies and apps go, I have an External Harddrive that i could transfer it all too so im not concerned about that. But I would like to keep all my musci on the Air. Also, how is the volume/speakers on the Air? I tend to listen to YouTube and my musci quite a bit so this is important but difficult to test in stores. I tried one in A BEst Buy on full volume and it seemed good but I'd like to be sure. Also, should I grab an Air now or wait until July when everyone thinks that a new one will be released? Please any information would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

Wait until next month when Lion is released and the expected updates including SandyBridge (much faster) CPUs and Thunderbolt ports are announced before making up your mind is the best advise I can give.  Overall performance should improve, but there is a chance that the integrated Intel graphics that are a part of Sandy Bridge will be slower than the existing nVidia ones, but this is probably only applicable to gamers.  Wait and see and read review, then come back to your question.

  • Ok so I have an iPod touch 4 and I want to get an iPad but don't know if I should get the iPad 2 or wait for the new one. I am 14 years

    iPad 2

Well, it depends how long you can wait. We can't discuss rumors on here about release dates.
Look at what you actually need though and decide how soon you need something.
What you'll want to realize is that every year or two something new will come out.. so you have to learn to fight off the "I need the new one" bug if you want to be satisfied with your purchase.  At your age you probably won't get the opportunity to upgrade for a while, so you'll have to learn to live with your purchase decision longer.
If the iPad 2 in it's current state does everything you want, and you enjoy playing around on it a lot, I'd get it now and be happy.  If you feel like you want the newest of the new and are willing to wait (in line and for it to release) then you should wait for the next release.
The iPad 2s are finally becoming available after many months backlog, so keep in mind the next release will likely be the same way and think if you could really wait that long to get something.
Alternatively you could also consider getting a used iPad 1, then use that while waiting for the next version. The used one could then be resold for a fair amount once the new one comes out. Apple products tend to have a pretty good resale value, and the iPads are extraordinarily popular.

  • 15" or 17" don't know what one to get

I'm looking at getting the MacBook Pro but i don't know if u should get the 17" or the 15" i did have a 17" powerbook that broke and i have been using a 13" macbook
i did hear that the 15" screen was better then the 17" is this true? i really dont know what one to get as i like the easy of portability but i like the big screen so what do people think???
    Thanks David

    hi
don't know if this helps... if you are looking at the 15" then I assume that you are happy with the glossy screen - cause the matte option is only an option on the 17". I've just bought the matte 17" and the resolution is bugging me cause at 1900x1200 the whole thing is so difficult to read, especially if like me you choose to use an external keyboard, then it's even more difficult! (practically impossible). If you choose a different display setting then you lose half the screen and have to continually drag the screen around, which is even more frustrating. Wish I'd thought about this when buying!!!. But for me the 17" was only option cause I detest the glossy screen trend - they are so impractical. As it is it looks like I'll end up buying an external display.
    Cheers

No, you simply do not.  Apple does not sell insurance.
Apple offers an Extended Warranty called AppleCare.
Warranties doe not cover lost or stolen devices.  Buy a new one.

  • Hi,  I don't really know wether I should post this message in the iPad sect

    Hi,
I don't really know wether I should post this message in the iPad section or in this section... Anyway.
    Here is my problem :
I would like to stream music from my iPad to my living room soundsystem, so I bought an Airport Express. BUT my router is upstairs, and I can't set up a permanent Ethernet connection between my router & Airport Express.
So my question is : Is it possible to set up the Airport Express as a "distinct network" (not connected to the internet) and Have the iPad connect on Both networks ?
    * my usual LAN to surf the net & everything else
    * The airport Network to stream music to the soundsystem
If my setup is wrong, i'm obviously open to any advice... Just keep in mind that I can't have a wired connection between the Airport Express & the Router...
Many thanks in advance for your answers.

Before to close this topic and mark it as solved, I will explain the whole process, so if you find this, you can try it directly... French version hereunder.
    Hardware setup :
    - Bbox2 Modem router provided by my ISP
    - PC with latest version of Airport Utility
    - Airport Express connected to amplifier (Jack - Double RCA) and to the router through Ethernet (the whole purpose of this is to remove this Ethernet cable).
    Before you begin :
Open your router configuration utility (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser). Change your network password (by default, mine was the 26 characters WEP key - 13 letters and 13 numbers). Choose a 13 characters password. I chose one with 7 letters followed by 6 numbers. Waring : This operation might (should ?) crash your current internet connexion and you may experience problems reconnectiong. Under Win 7, Go to the properties --> security of your network to type your new password & connect again.
    Once this is done :
    1. Open the Airport Utility on your computer
    2. Do a "hard reset" of the Airport Express" (AE) using a pen or a paperclip --> the AE disappears from the Airport utility, then shows up again.
    3. Select "replace the settings with default settings" to clean up the mess your previous attempts might have caused
    4. You're back to the default configuration
    5. On the Airport utility window you see now, invent a new password for the AE & clic continue
    6. Select "I want AE to join my current network" (3rd option), clic on "Continue".
    7. Select "I want AE to wirelessly join my current network" (1st Option), clic on continue
    8. Select your network in the drop down menu and select "WEP 128 bits" as encryption mode (Your network obviously has to use WEP encryption. If it's not the case, go back to your router management utility and set the security to WEP or write another tutorial
    9. Clic on "Update"
    10. Watch your LAN crash
    11. Say "What the F**" and unplug the Ethernet cable from the AE. Your LAN should get better very quickly.
    12. Accidentally unplug the AE from the wall. Plug it again quickly with 2 or 3 "Sh** !"
    You're done !
    French version :
    Préalable :
    Configuration hardware :
    3. Sélectionner "Replace the settings with default settings" histoire de virer tout merdier d'essais précédents.
    4. Vous êtes de retour à la configuration "de base"
    5. Sur l'écran qui s'affiche alors, inventez un nouveau mot de passe pour l'AE puis Cliquez sur "continuer"
    6. Sélectionnez "I want Export Express to Join my current network (3ième option)" puis cliquez sur "continuer"
    7. Choisissez "I want AE to wirelessly Join my current network (1ière option)" puis cliquez sur "continuer"
    12. Retirez accidentellement l'AE de la prise. Rebranchez-le vite fait avec 2-3 "Mert".
    You're done !

  • I dont know if i should get an iPad 2 or 3??

    Hi all,
I am going to get an iPad soon but I dont know if I should get an iPad 2 or an iPad 3.
Its a lot to do with cost but I also dont want to get one that I will later regret and think I should have gotten the other!
I am looking to use it for everyday use, emails, apps, web browsing and when I am out and about the occasional film too!
I am really stuck because I dont have a lot of money and so therefore this is a big decision for me!
I know i dont really need the 3G already but I am really torn between the iPad 2 and the 3.
If I was to go for the 3 then I would only be able to afford the 16GB version which is the same as my iPhone.
If I was to go for the 2 then I could afford the 32GB version!
Advise would be really good thanks,
    Paul

If you want a 32GB iPad 2, you must get a refurbished unit. See below.

  • HT4623 I don't know what has happened but the update didn't work and now it asks me to restore the iPad. I don't know whether I should as i'm too scared it will delete everything i had on my iPad. What should i do if i did backup my iPad before the update

So i have a serious problem regarding the iOS update on my iPad 4 and i don't know whether i should restore it because i'm scared it will loose all the data.

You are saying that you DID backup your iPad so there should be no worries at all. After you restore the iOS, you can restore from the backup - and sync with iTunes, if you are using iTunes - and you should be fine. If you see the iTunes logo and the USB cable on the screen, you are in recovery mode.
    Read this for more information.
If you can't update or restore your iOS device - Apple
If you didn't backup your iPad, there is nothing that you can do about it now. You will lose everything when you restore. You can add you purchased content back to the device using the purchased tabs in all of the iStores or you can sync your content back to the iPad if you use iTunes.
No matter what, you have to restore if you want to be able to use your iPad again.

Follow the directions in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
Follow the directions in "Designing AirPort Networks" (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPortNetworks.pdf). The same directions apply for the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express (AX).

In either of the above 2 configurations, simply connect the USB printer to the AX's USB port.
