I Don't Need This

When i booted my iBook yesterday i noticed something i have never seen before. It is the network icon but but blue with a black person outline in front of it. My computer does not boot from the network so i don't really need this. How do i get rid of it?

I'm not sure I really get what you mean here, but I may have had the same problem. By network icon, I'm assuming that you mean the user icon, possibly? Apple replaced my user icon somehow when I configured my .Mac account. You can change it via 'System Preferences' and then 'Accounts'. Under that panel, you can select a picture.
I'm sorry if I just gave you an explanation for a completely unrelated problem.

  • HT5037 What is the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool?  Should not need it, because installed Photo 9.5.1 three days ago, AND my iphoto will not open. The message says if I have v8.x or later, I don't need this tool.

Why is my iPhoto 9.5.1 blocked?
Message on pop up screen says I need the Library Upgrader tool, when in the very discription of it: "If your library is from iPhoto (v8.x) or later, you don't need to use this tool."

What version of iPhoto did you have prior to upgrading to iPhoto 9.5.1?  The following is from this download page: iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1
This tool prepares libraries from iPhoto 7 or earlier so they can be upgraded with the current version of iPhoto.
So if you previous version of iPhoto was 7 or earlier you need to download (it installs in the Applications/Utilities folder), launch and apply it to your iPhoto Library before opening the library with iPhoto 9.5.1.

A warm welcome to Apple discussions!
A 2003 iMac cannot support Snow Leopard 10.6; you'd need an Intel processor and that cannot be retrofitted to your Mac. What does "About this Mac" in your Apple menu say  for your processor speed? What does it say about how much RAM you have?
If the processor is 1ghz or faster, you can run OS 10.5; otherwise, you are maxed out at 10.4.11.
Also, are you running any commercial ("pay for") anti-virus or security software? They are notorious for slowing most Macs to a fraction of their speed potential.
A too-full hard drive can drag down performance, especially if you don't have a lot of physical RAM installed. If you single-click your hard drive icon and then do command i, you'll see the disk usage. Looks like this:
The value for "Used" should be no more than about 90 percent of "Capacity." In the example image, that drive has about 34 percent of its space used and 66 percent free--more than enough. Please post what you see for your Capacity and Used numbers
There are a few more things we might check but this is a good start.
    Awaiting your information,
    Allan

  • I need my url bar back. The customized search bar is 6x larger. I don't need this in addition to a Google page for searches. I need to see what I am trying to access. How do I enlarge the url window and shrink or delete the other window?

I can't see what I am typing in the URL bar. Maybe 5 characters are visible an a time. The Translator Bar Covers over half of the open window.

Mozilla hasn't changed anything like that in Firefox 3.6.x versions, which is getting security patches but not any further development of new or existing features. Plus, Mozilla doesn't install anything related to Yahoo, something else probably installed that.

There was a feature similar to what you are describing, that was in and out of the Firefox 4.0 betas last fall, but the 3.6 versions never had anything remotely like what your description has me visualizing.

  • Why does namcap say I don't need stuff I definitely do need?

I have developed some bash scripts using ffmpeg, imagemagick's convert, yad, and lots of other tools that I had to explicitly install, but namcap claims I don't need to list any of those dependencies. It's called silentcast and makes it easy to create a variety of animated gif recordings of the screen. I haven't put it in the AUR yet because I'm still working on the README.md, but the package is basically ready for use and available on github: https://github.com/colinkeenan/silentcast/#silentcast. I created the animated gifs in that README.md with silentcast itself.
Anyway, I was listing all the dependencies in a table in the README.md and realized I had missed a lot of stuff so added more. Then, still worried I had missed something, I read the wiki to find out how to test for missing dependencies and discovered namcap. First, I tried running namcap on PKGBUILD, but that didn't do anything. Next, I did a makepkg -s and ran namcap on the package just created. Here's what namcap has to say:
    namcap -i silentcast-1.0-1-any.pkg.tar.xz
silentcast I: Script link detected (bash) in file ['usr/bin/genffcom', 'usr/bin/silentcast', 'usr/bin/temptoanim']
silentcast I: Script link detected (python) in file ['usr/share/silentcast/transparent_window.py']
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('ffmpeg')

silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('yad')
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('xorg-xrandr')
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('wmctrl')
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('xdotool')
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('xorg-xwininfo')
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('python-gobject')
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('python-cairo')
silentcast W: Dependency included and not needed ('xdg-utils')
silentcast I: Dependency covered by dependencies from link dependence (bzip2)
silentcast I: Dependency covered by dependencies from link dependence (readline)
silentcast I: Dependency covered by dependencies from link dependence (linux-api-headers)
silentcast I: Dependency covered by dependencies from link dependence (gdbm)

silentcast I: Dependency covered by dependencies from link dependence (sh)
silentcast I: Dependency covered by dependencies from link dependence (zlib)
silentcast I: Depends as namcap sees them: depends=(bash python)
So, namcap thinks I only need bash and python! This is crazy. All the stuff I listed as dependencies are explicitly called in the bash scripts or imported in the python script because they were needed in that script. Many of these I had to install myself and were certainly not included with bash and python! Why is namcap saying I don't need this stuff?
It occurs to me that maybe I haven't properly created the PKGBUILD so that namcap thinks the dependencies are covered by installing the various included scripts. Do I have to somehow make it clear all those scripts ARE the package? Here is my PKGBUILD.

colinkeenan wrote:The specific answer I was looking for and hoping namcap would give me had to do with xdg-open from the xdg-utils package. I use it to open the desktop's file-browser. On the Packages page for xdg-utils, optional dependencies are listed according to what desktop it's being run on. So, for example, I use Xfce and it lists 'exo' and 'xorg-xprop' as optional dependencies. I have no idea if those optional dependencies are actually required in order for my script to open the file-browser in Xfce.
How can you not know?  Do you use exo or xprop in the script or not?  If you only use xdg-open, then only specify that as a dependency.  Users can then figure out which specific tools they wish to use to satisfy that dependency.  I use my own replacement for xdg-open, and if I wanted I could package it listing "xdg-open" in the provides array so your tool would then call my xdg-open replacement tool.  It's not up to you to worry about how other users chose to implement xdg-open unless your scripts depend on a specific implementation.
Much the same could be bash.  If your script uses a bash hashbang, then bash is a dependency.  If you use a "sh" hashbang than any shell will do - but then you must use only posix shell commands and conditionals - there are a lot of "bashisms" that will not work in other shells (e.g. the [[ bash builtin for conditionals).  But even if bash is a dependency it does not need to  be listed: you should not list dependencies that are in base or base-devel.
On a related question that you touched on in this thread, you do not need to list recursive dependencies.  If you list python modules that have python as a hard dependency, then you do not need to list python.  But just like the 'bashisms' example above, if you use a specific version of python (2.7 or 3) these are generally not compatible.  The modules might not care which python is installed to meet it's needs, but your script may require a specific implementation of python.  In such a case, you'd have to specify which python you used in addition to the python module(s).
    EDIT:
Bear in mind I just whipped this up on the spot, and I have no idea how reliable it is - but in principle the following line should find dependencies for any script or anything else for that matter - provided that simply running the script/command will use everything that is required:
    pacman -Qqo $(strace ./script 2>&1 | awk '/^(open|stat|access)/ {sub(/[a-z]*\("/,"",$1); sub(/",/,"",$1); print $1}') 2>/dev/null | sort -u
This is assuming the script is in the current working directory and named "script".  I'll put together a more flexible and useful version momentarily.

  • It won't let me share my movie. Nothing happens when I click "share" or even in the drop down menu. I don't get options. HELP! I need this video by tonight!

I have worked with iMoive a ton and have never had an issue. I consider myself pretty computer savvy. This new iMovie is not my friend. It will not let me share my new video. I click on the project and click "share" like it says but I don't receive any further prompt. It literally does nothing. I tried the drop down menu and I see the "share" with an arrow indicating there are options but no drop down menu appears. I need this video by tonight to submit for work. HELP!

I got it to share! No reloading iMovie!
I do not have Mackeeper on my laptop
I have the movie files on an external hard drive
    1. Close out iMovie
    2. Eject the external hard drive
    3. Start up iMovie
    4. Plug in the external hard drive
    5. Go into finder and double click on the folder containing the movie
    6. Select the movie as if to edit
    7. Share it!
I hope this works for you too

  • "How do I defrag my mac?" "You don't need to, it does it itself" Fragmented Free Space: 99%. READ THIS NOW

Just a heads up for my fellow Mac users.
"How do I defrag my mac?"
"You don't need to, ever. It does it automatically."
    "But it's running really slowly..."
"Repair permissions or something. Defragging is not necessary on a mac."
Techtool pro is now defragmenting my mac. Looks like the job's going to take about 4 hours. I thought I'd give everyone the truth about this while waiting (on a different computer obviously)
The truth is, Apple's defragmenting system ***** BALLS. It has two massive, massive flaws which I feel people urgently need to be made aware of.
#1: It only defragments files up to 20mb. If you're a movie producer, a songwriter, a photographer, or anything which involves working with many massive files, the built in defragmenting program WILL NOT HELP YOU IN THE SLIGHTEST.
#2: It only defragments FILES. Free space is ignored, which eventually causes absolutely hrrendous problems.
Let me give you an analogy here. Imagine your mac's hard drive is a bookcase with lots of books on it.
File fragmentation is when it can't find a gap in the bookcase big enough for the entire book, so it breaks the book into pieces and srotes them in different gaps.
Space fragmentation is when there are gaps all over the bookcase, instead of all the books being pushed to one side so there's a long gap elsewhere.
Apple's built in defragmenting program will only fix the first problem - and even then, it will ignore any book bigger than 20 pages long, if you have bigger books which are broken up, you're screwed.
Why is space fragmentation a problem? It's a problem because it directly LEADS TO file fragmentation. If there is a large block of free space all in one part of the disk, then an entire file can be written to it. However, if there is no single free block big enough for the file, it HAS NO CHOICE but to fragment it.
So basically you might have 5 GB free and want to save a 2GB imovie project. That's cool. But what you may not realize is, the biggest single area of free space is only say 600MB. Others are around 300 and 400. Therefore the file MUST be fragmented into all these different areas, which wouldn't be necessary if all the free space was in one area of the disk.
But apple's built in tools don't do anything about this, at least not in Tiger. PErhaps this has been fixed in later installations but I'm almost certain the same issues exist in leopard.
Your only option is to buy a defragmenting program. I know this ***** but believe me, this IS something you NEED to do if your activity on your laptop involves disk space - intensive projects. I'm using TechTool Pro which has been recommended to me as hands down the best. It has a number of other functions as well, right now I'm only using the defragmenting tools but it has others for repairing damages disk sectors and other mantainence tools. There are other programs such as iDefrag out there as well.
Why am I telling you this? I'm telling you because I experienced mind numbing frustration trying to get answers from the Apple community. Google it or ask the question yourself and you will most likely be whacked in the face with the intro to my post here - "You don't need to, it's not necessary, macs do it themselves, blah blah blah"
Even worse, Apple's own webpage on the subject is nothing short of a disaster. It basically says "You PROBABLY don't need to defragment, unless you work with large files." That's it. You'd expect it to have an extra section saying "If you DO happen to work with large files, here's what you do" but no such section exists. It basically says "You don't need to defrag most of the time, and on the rare occasions when you do, well, too bad, you're screwed."
I urge everyone to heed this or they will be tearing their hair out at how slow their mac has become and the fact that no one will offer any meaningful advice other than the standard, generic, "Repair permissions" - the Mac equivelant of "have you tried turning it off and on again".
My disk is at 99% fragmented free space. NINTEY NINE PERCENT. In other words, although I have 25GB of free space, there was not a single contiguous block on the entire machine. I had almost 5,000 fragmented files as well, mostly imovies. Defragmenting got this down to about 300.
The defrag job is taking more than 4 hours and will probably go on to take a lot longer than that. This machine has been slowly grinding to a halt over the last 3 years and now I know why.
Please don't listen to anyone. Get yourself a defragmenting folder, and email Apple to tell them it's just not good enough to give their customers half assed answers and inadequate basic maintainence tools. Mac OS X must literally be the only operating system out there where something as basic as defragmenting is not only almost impossible to get answers on, but actually costs money to fix once you DO get answers.
As customers, we should not accept this any longer. I intend to spread the above message far and wide.
I LOVE Apple. I've always been "a mac" and I always will be. This in no way a mac bashing post or a windows endorsing one. I wouldn't switch back to windows if you gave me a million euro.
But sometimes even the best developers can royally f*ck up. This is one of them.
There is no readon people should be forced to put up with this crap. Absolutely no reason at all. I've had 3 months of crappy performance with no official explanation whatsoever.
Apple if you're reading this: I love your products. I'm a loyal customer. People are more forgiving than you think, speak up, admit you dropped the ball, and DO something about it in your next updates to Lion and whichever versions of Leopard you are still actively maintaining.
There's no shame in admitting when you're wrong. The shame is in hiding behind false promises and walls of silence.
--Loyal customer, but feeling rather betrayed by all this.

The old rule of thumb was to keep 10-12 GB free. Any lower than that and you will start to have trouble. I was very close to that for a long time and never had any complaints. Now, Lion "encourages" 20% free space (on my newer 250 GB drive) so I try to keep it with more than 50 GB free.
Do you still have the original memory in that machine too? The metal plate you have to remove in the battery compartment also provides access to the RAM. Your machine will take 2 GB of RAM, possibly 3. You definitely want to max that out too.
Regardless, you definitely need a new hard drive. When Apple switched to PC components, they had to take a quality hit. These 2.5" notebook hard drives are not very reliable. I'm surprised your hard drive hasn't died by now. I usually get a new hard drive with every major OS upgrade. A $ 50 investment every couple of years is no big deal.
Unfortunately, you (and I) suffer from being an early adopter in 2006. Those 32-bit machines only accept 2 GB RAM (maybe 3) and are only 32-bit so they can't be upgraded to Lion. Because of this limitation, you won't see as dramatic an improvement as you would with a 2007 machine. If you run more than a couple of applications, your hard drive is always going to have to be doing some VM work. My 2006 machine has even lost its bluetooth. I gave it to my brother. My very similar 2007 Macbook is still running great.
So, you must get a new hard drive because your old one is likely on death's door. If you don't have at least 2 GB - get it. If you can't afford a new machine, you might want to consider an SSD. That might help mitigate your RAM limitations. You can spend from $ 100 to $ 350 and get a dramatic speed improvement.

I installed a new SSD drive in my computer and now Adobe Creative Suite Web Premium says I don't have a license. I have license. It was very expensive. I am disabled now, and I need this software working. Adobe Acrobat has been a primary tool for accommodating memory problems after a brain injury. (A car ran me down while I was out getting exercise.) I installed the SSD because I needed my management of PDF files to run faster. I called tech support for help when the software first stopped working, but they needed me to give them a number from my original disks. Because of my disability, I've been having someone come in to clean, and the shelves where I kept my software packages were cleared. I've been hunting for them ever since, but I can't look for them myself for very long at a time. Today I finally found them, but now I can't seem to contact tech support. What happened? I don't want to delete my old files because I need the setup to remain unchanged, because I don't do well with changes. I think all I should need is to have someone located the license file on drive E: and move it to wherever it is needed on the SSD drive, but I don't know what to look for.

Tech support is not normally available on weekends.  You should contact them as soon as the weekend passes and pick up where you left off with them.

What kind of use do you make of your MBP?  A lot of photo or video?  If so, you may be storing a lot of large files.  Look at Finder and see what the file system looks like.  Do you have large libraries of data files associated with applications?
You may want to think about an external hard drive to use for backups and data storage, you can point applications to the external drive as the default storage location.
A good source of external drives at a reasonable price is the Mac specialist, OWC, http://www.macsales.com
I bought their Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB dirve last September and set it up to use part for Time Machine backup and part for other work space.  Setup with Disk utility into two partitions is very quick and easy.  Just remember to format as Extended Journaled with GUID partition table.  Setting the partition sizes is by using a braphical image on screen in DU so it is like falling off a log, so easy.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

This is a little confusing since you say you have forgotten your password and then the system says you have not entered a password.  Even with an Admin account you must have a password to install software.
If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 or above, you can change the admin password by restarting holding the Command and R keys, from the menu bar select Utilities, then Terminal.  When the Terminal window opens, at the cursor type exactly:
    resetpassword
and press Enter.  When the Reset Password window opens, select the internal hard drive, and then the user account.  Type a new password twice, leave the Hint blank, and then Save.  Accept the next dialog that opens, and at the bottom of the Reset Password window agree to resetting the home directory permissions.
Quit the Reset Password window, go to the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart.
And you have a new password for your account.
