I don't see thumbnails for PDF files in my Windows Explorer

Hi,
When browsing through my File Manager to look for files, I used to be able to see a thumbnail of any PDF files I'd saved.
I can still see the old ones created earlier, but my more recent files just show a black square with the Adobe 'A' in bottom right hand corner or sometimes a large Adobe 'A' on white field with "PDF" in top left corner.
Seeing a thumbnail I think helps to find your file. Does anyone know why I don't get them any more or how to get them back. (The save a thumbnail option is checked for normal word docs, but not visible when saving as PDF.
I am using Mic Office 2010 (Word) to save as PDF. My computer is Windows 7 64bit.
Interesting, I can see a preview of PDF files which is a help, but not individual thumbnails for my more recent files....can still see them for older, longer ago saved PDFs.
Added info:
Just checked, I last had thumbnails in December 2011, January 2012 I stopped getting them.
Tried to insert a picture to show you what I get in explorer, but just get a big dark grey square so I'll explain. Just worked out the following.
Prior to end of 2011 my PDFs have a thumbnail.
After that I just have a black square with the Adobe 'A' in bottom right hand corner if I create PDF with Word
If I do 'Save As' while in the reader I get a large Adobe 'A' on white field with "PDF" in top left corner

NO, NOT THAT SIMPLE, now I find some normal thumbnails later in 2012, so the behaviour is changeable!!!!!

  • Possible to generate xmp thumbnails for PDF files in Acrobat?

    Hi,
Apps from the Creative Suite 5.5 allow to embed a tiny preview (as XMP thumbnail) when saving to some .ai .indd or .pdf file. However, I could not find the option in Acrobat X Pro.
Such XMP thumbnails prove useful when visually browsing through PDF documents in Windows' explorer. I'm surprised Acrobat X lacks such a feature whereas other apps from the Suite do it fine.
Please not I'm not talking about embedding page previews, this is a completely different topic.

sample file, you can use any name and append the xml data elements too...

  • Color Display for PDF Files Creative Cloud in Browser View

I have noticed that there is a great difference in color display between a PDF and .ai/eps files. When viewed in the browser there seems to be no ICC taking affect for PDF files even though options to include the profiles, etc in output were selected. This makes it hard to use as a tool when showing clients proofs via the browser as they will never see proper color. I know color will vary between monitors but the difference is huge for some colors. Like a dark almost Navy Blue appearing like a vibrant pen ink blue. On a Mac when you use the quick spacebar preview the correct color shows for all versions of file type but in the browsers it shows the color incorrectly. Have tried this so far on the Mac in in Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Even Google Drive can display all the file types correctly with correct color although the way it shows eps files is a bit off. That I don't mind as I rarely save eps files anymore.
Is there something I am missing or is this a defect in the browser display?
The other possible option would be to flip my thinking and save everything as .ai files with PDF compatibility turned on and then have to tell clients that they should be able to open that ai file in Acrobat. At the moment I save everything as PDF files with Illustrator compatibility turned on.

Can anyone throw light on this. I'm facing same problem.

  • Why a Black Screen for pdf files

I can't see the opened pdf files, just get a black screen.  Help, please.  I have no Adobe plug-ins.  I have latest Mavericks software on iMac

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • No Thumbnails for AVI files in organizer

My AVI Video clips are not showing thumbnails in the PSE 11 Orgazizer.
Here is what I have observed as I have been troubleshooting this:
    The files are MJPEG.
When I double click on it in the organizer window, I get audio, but no video.
If I open the file for edit in Premier Elements, the video thumbnail shows up in project assests and the video correctly plays in the Premier Elements editor.
If I double click on the files in Windows Explorer they open up in Quicktime Version 7.
The thumbnails for the files show in up windows explorer when I browse to the folder they are in.
I selected a file in PSE, chose 'Export to New File" and the file that I created by doing that showed a generic Quicktime icon without the thumbnail in windows explorer. When I double click on that file it correctly plays in Quicktime.
Selecting "Update Thumbnail" has no effect.
Thumnails are corrctly showing for .mov, .mpg and .mp4 file types.
Any one have any ideas what is going on with the organizer that might be causing this beavior or is this a know limitation of PSE Organizer. What is the point of having the organizer supporting video If I can't see the video without opening it in the Premier Elements Editor?
I am providing the "Systems Info" if that helps anyone.

I do not use Organizer, but instead Adobe Bridge (included with some other Adobe programs, like Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro), or ThumbsPlus (Cerious Software), and find that some AV formats/CODEC's just do not display thumbnails. I have had that issue with some, like MPEG-1 files, some WMV files, almost anything with DivX, or Xvid.
I have not used any MJPEG files, so cannot comment on them, but have helped others Import and edit those (never tried to work with any in Organizer, Bridge or ThumbsPlus), and in those cases, it usually boiled down to having the exact MJPEG CODEC installed. As each camera mfgr. seems intent on tweaking the MJPEG CODEC, it is normally possible to Import and edit, if THAT particular MJPEG CODEC is installed, and usually from the camera's utiltiy disc. Other times, the generic Morgan, or MainConcept MJPEG CODEC's have worked - though that seems to be less often, as Nikon, Panasonic, and others, keep tweaking.
As for the display of any problem AV files, it is usually an inability of the organizing utility to find a proper display, though in some cases, there IS a display, but the first Frame of the AV file is black, with a Dip-to-Black (in this case basically a Fade-in) Transition.
Good luck, and I wish that I had a fail-safe way to always display a thumbnail for ALL AV files, and even better, the ability to set the Poster Frame to what I wanted. So far, no organizer utility, that I have seen, can display thumbs for ALL AV formats - some will handle some AV formats/CODEC's, that others will not, but none has been perfect.

  • [GNOME], [Firefox] (still) defaults to GIMP for PDF files

I've installed Arch Linux with GNOME twice this past year, on both i686 and x86-64 systems. Both times, I've installed GNOME with it's default PDF reader, Evince, as well as GIMP for image editing (of course). Firefox, regardless of my preferences in Nautilus, only gives me the option of opening PDF files in GIMP (as opposed to saving them). If I save the file and open it from the downloads window, it opens in GIMP, but if I download it and then open it directly in Nautilus, then it opens in Evince without any problems. Of course, I could work around this and simply add /usr/bin/evince to the list of programs for PDF files, but I would have to do this for every single user that I add before Firefox is reasonably usable for downloading PDFs.
There was a thread on this a while ago, but it's closed now so I can't add to it. This is still a problem in 2011 and before I report this as a bug anywhere, we'd have to figure out the exact cause of the problem: is it GNOME, GIMP, Firefox, or something else entirely that causes this? How could I fix this so I don't have to use a messy workaround?
Oh, also, after installing GIMP, it's treated as the default application for PDF files regardless of GNOME's default preferences. Evince is listed but GIMP "hijacks" it in a sense. This is fixable in Nautilus easily, but it shouldn't have to be a necessary step.

ngoonee wrote:mimeopen would solve the problem. The issue is that firefox just defaults to using xdg-specifications, and gnome isn't really very good about setting that (uses its own gnome-open instead of xdg-open after all).
I never knew that about GNOME. Mimeopen did fix the problem for me. Thanks very much!

I dont know if this is what your talking about but..
In firefox go to edit>preferences> applications tab (you can choose which app opens what filetypes)
I mentioned that I tried this and it works fine, but I don't want to have to do that workaround on every single account I make. The workaround suggested, as I said, works well enough.
So if I understand this correctly, this is a Firefox bug?

  • After loading Mavericks, I can't see/open attached pdf files

after loading OS X Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I can't see/open attached pdf files. I've checked my Security Preferences in Safari and Enable Java Script and Allow Plug-Ins are both selected. Any ideas as to what I need to do???

I checked as you noted above - this is what comes up
Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 10.1.7
so I assume (?) that it is installed.
I just went into my hydro bill and tried to open the pdf version and, low and behold, it opened.  So somewhere in between when I reinstalled it yesterday (after your suggestion) and just now, it is working!!!
So thank-you for your help!!.  Cheers.

  • Thumbnails for PDF-Documents

    Hi,
    I want to use "thumbnails"-property (rnd:thumbnail) for PDF-Documents. Do I need an extra plug-in?
    Thanks!
    Kind regards
    Natalya Kolesnikova

    Hi Mark,
as far as I know the BADIs here are used to connect a special converter which is able to convert PDF files into useable thumbnail formats.
Maybe the information in the following link can help you to find a consulting partner which can help you to realise this function:

  • PSE 12 Has stopped showing thumbnails for new files

PSE 12 has stopped showing thumbnails for new file imports. Have  Windows 8.1 update

In the PSE12 Organizer, the last files imported show an hourglass thumbnail. I am importing from the camera card. Other images have the correct thumbnail. I see the spinning icon on the lower bar showing it updating the catalog. Thank you for your assistance

  • Cs6 bridge not showing thumbnails for raw file

    Just upgraded to CS6
cs6 bridge not showing thumbnails for raw files.
Can see thumbnails in CS5.1 bridge  and LR 4.2 which fortunately i did not uninstall.
Bummer since I am up against a hard deadline.
    Really Sucks

We can't know. You are not offering any system information or e.g. info about what image files you are working with. Since they do show up in your otehr programs, my assumption would be that you need to switch the Camera Raw engine back to the 2009/2010 version in Photoshop and not use the default new 2012 one. Perhaps your thumbnails will appear then....

  • Make Acrobat the default reader for pdf-files.

Since some time (probably after I installed Mavericks) pdf-files are by default opened
in Preview. To open them in Adobe Acrobat, I can right-click the pdf-file, choose Acrobat,
and indicate that Acrobat should be the default reader for pdf-files.
This works, and after logout and login, it does still work.
But after a reboot, Preview is again the default reader.
Also, if in Finder I right-click a pdf-file, and via Get Info I configure Acrobat
to be the default reader for the specific file and all other pdf-files (by clicking
Change All), this only works for the current session. After a reboot Preview again is the
    default.
How can I make Acrobat Reader the default reader for pdf-files, and make this setting
    permanent?
    Where is this setting saved?
    Regards,
    Kees.

I finally solved this, but I still don't understand how.
To begin with I have 2 hard-drives in my iMac. The OS is on the primary HD, and data are on the secondary drive. My Home directory too is on this secondary HD.
To check whether the location of the Home directory might be the problem, I copied the Home directory to the primary HD, changed the path in my profile, and did a reboot.
The next step was to configure Adobe Acrobat as the default reader for pdf-files. To my surprise,  after rebooting, Acrobat still was the default reader for pdf-files.
So it looks as if this problem has something to do with the location of the Home directory.
The original Home directory was still present on the secondary  HD,  So the next step was to change in my profile the path to the Home directory again (pointing again to the original Home directory on the second HD), do a reboot and delete the copy of the Home directory on the primary HD.
So now the situation was back to as it was before: the Home directory on the second HD.
To my surprise now Acrobat still was the default reader for pdf-files.
And I could also change the default reader to Preview, and back to Acrobat, and this setting was saved across reboots.
I'm curious to what solved this problem, and where the setting of the default pdf-reader, or more general, the default application for file types, is stored.
So I hope that someone who reads this, can shed some light on this.

  • Change the ICONS Reader7.0 for .PDF files

I have tried everything I know.
    Explorer>Folder Options>File Types>.PDF>Advanced>Change Icon
    or whatever and NOTHING WORKS.
Now I want my ICONS back that were under version 6.0
Not the one that 7.0 assigns to the .PDF files.
I have not been able to change it.
    Does anyone know how to?
    A REGISTRY KEY
and what I am looking for
I just want the ICON that was there when I Reader 6.0 for .PDF files.
    That's all....
It sucks that Adobe doesn't let it get changed...(Just don't like the icon, too much white border around it).

I have found that Text-to-Speech works just fine in Yosemite's Preview application — without changing any standard settings. I added additional voices, and it works equally well with these too. You should not expect Text-to-Speech functionality with text that is incorporated into a graphic though.
Both Edit > Speech  > Start Speaking, and after enabling in Text-to-Speech Preferences, Speak selected text when the key is pressed (option+Esc).

  • Firefox preview for pdf files doesn't show certain Cyrillic scripts.

Since pdf preview support was added in Firefox I can't find a solution for the missing Cyrillic letters in the preview of the pdfs which the software in my company generates.
Other pdf software/browsers with preview don't have issues with the Cyrillic script regardless of localization and OS as the fonts are embedded in the pdf.
Can you please help with finding some documentation to use as a reference point for finding the solution for this issue?

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • How to create link for pdf file in discoverer worksheet

    Hi All,
I would like to create a link for pdf file into discoverer report (worksheet).
So that i can open linked pdf file using worksheet link.
Can any one tell me about this?
    Thanks
    Ravi

    Hi,
I think the best way to do this is to use a database directory so that you can access your pdf file as a bfile. Then create a mod_plsql procedure that sets the mime type and downloads the pdf file. You then create a calculation in the EUL then returns the URL to your mod_plsql procedure. You can then include this calculation as a hyperlink in your worksheet.
It is not as difficult as it sounds. Please let me know if you need anymore details.
