I don't understand iCloud

Seriously. I don't get it. And I'm not a newby, either.
Aside from the dubious value of remote data, here's what I don't get. Say I need to make an appointment. I'm sitting at my desk. I pull up iCal, now Calendar, and I see this:
What does this even mean? If I select an iCloud account does that mean I can't see it anywhere else? Of if I select On My Mac, I can't see the appointment on my iPhone? Why do I have two sets of accounts and why are they different?
It's confusing.
I don't care about iCloud All I want is to see my stuff on my Mac and on my iPhone like I used to. Synching with iTunes worked great.
Maybe someone can send me in the right direction on this? (computer-wise, I mean).

Do I understand it correctly that iCloud is basically a server maintained by Apple? Who else potentially has access to my calendar, notes, etc. informaiton that I save in iCloud?
Indeed it is a server, just by a fancy name. The security is the password, which is why you should makew sure it's a strong one. I suppose it would be technically possible for Apple staff to get into your account - I don't know whether the password is hidden from them - but there are privacy laws covering that sort of thing (and remember that there are thousands of accounts). Exactly the same is true of DropBox and the other online services - and your online banking. It all depends on the password - don't choose the name of your cat.
do I understand you correctly, that I can use USB port and save my iTunes app on it instead of my PC and then use it to update my apps, syncing if needed, etc.?
Not exactly. You can connect to iTunes on your Mac/PC and iOS device, either through wifi or the USB port, and use it to transfer data between them. At each connection iTunes will sync with  the device which has just connected. The advantage of iCloud is that it does this automatically, you don't have to initiate the connection, and of course you can keep in sync when you are away from home (obviously you need an internet connection).
For more detailed questions about using iTunes to sync you should ask in the iTunes forum.

  • HT4847 Don't understand the purpose of icloud storage

    Hello,
Maybe I'm alone on this one, but even after reading Apple's articles on iCloud and iCloud storage, I don't understand the purpose of it.  I am only using 23.5 of a 25 Go storage (all of it is backup of all my apps and files (not sure the movies and music is covered even though the iPad general setting info implies this since I'm in Europe) and yet, if I delete the app files from the iPad, I also delete them from the cloud.  So for instance, I want to update to the latest iOS and it says I'm short 312 Mo and need to delete stuff from the iPad.
If I understand correctly, the only way to do this safely is to make sure a duplicate is on my PC via iTunes. So then what do I need the iCloud extra storage for (for which I am paying)?  Is this like a SkyDrive or Dropbox or not???
Please someone clear this up in simple, step-by-step type language.  I feel like I'm getting a round around when I read or take to Apple folks via email.  Thanks in advance!

Movies, music and apps are not part of your back ups, they are all available already on Apples servers as part of the iTunes Store. Backups consist of settings, photos and other data which cannot be obtained from elsewhere.
iCloud is not general online storage like Dropbox, in addition to back ups it keeps all your app data from apps such as contacts, calendars etc so it can be accessed by all your devices and keep them in sync. But in keeping with the mobile system structure the data is accessed through the app rather than a folder structure.

These information are contradctory. Now my account is locked.
What Am I supposed to do???
    thanks for your help!

Well as far as I can tell the only developed alternative to Apple is Microsoft, sure you want to go there?
iCloud (and Mobile Me before it) are consumer level systems, working correctly they are a poor choice for business use, if you want to stay all Mac try Zimbra if you can let a little Microsoft in the mix use Microsoft Exchange (Mail, iCal & Address Book are compatible as clients), hosted Exchange systems cost about $10 per month.
Or try to fix what is wrong with your installation (which is clearly not running as it should)

  • Why was there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my file now.

Why is there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my files now. I read short comments & how to's in the support sections, but nothing I've read so far explains"best practices" or turning iCloud off to get a grip on managing files. I have 250gb fast storage on the MBP itself, and 200gb in the ICloud, one would thing that's enough. The files seem too be multiplying like rabbits. IPhoto's Faces has created hundereds of "somethings" not sure what. I am sure I am very frustrated! Please comment with kindness.

Yes,I am confused. To say its just another drive is a "buzz statement".
OK, for example. If I download a document, song, or photo from ICloud, as I understand, it goes to Download in Finder. If I want to move it to a local folder of my choice on the solid state drive in my new MBP, does a copy always stay in ICloud? How do you housekeep? I have always  used to a physical drive. What is different about the mind set.  I used ICloud to store the contents of my old MBP. Once I download all the files I need, should I turn off ICloud and manage the file locally? I don't like the automatic movement of files when I don't understand the locations.
    Nope, you don't understand it.
If you download a song from the iTunes cloud storage (which is not iCloud) it goes into the iTunes music folder (generally to a subfolder therein)
If you download a document from the iCloud drive it will go wherever you chose to put it.
If you download a photo from the iCloud Photo library it will also go wherever you choose to put it.*
If you move something you have not copied it, if you want to keep a copy on the iCloud drive and in a local folder, you would copy, not move it.
There is no 'automatic' movement, you decide what to store on the iCloud drive (exactly like any other drive) and what to remove.
The iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder, you use it just like any other, copy/paste, save, delete etc.
You can turn the iCloud drive off whenever you like, download the content to a local drive first.
    * Because the iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder there is in fact no need to ever download anything to your Mac, everything on the drive is already on your Mac.

You aren't addressing anyone from Apple here.  This is a user forum.
You might want to call a neaby Apple store to see if they have a free class you could attend.

  • I don't understand my EtreCheck report. What can I do to improve the speed of my Macbook 2010, which became very slow after upgrading to Yosemite?

I just updated my Macbook (2010) to Yosemite, and it's become very slow. After searching through this community, I downloaded and run EtreCheck, but don't understand what the report means. I advise to reply to the one you want to reply to.
You have had good information here. I will not repeat that here.
    I would like to add:
you have incompatible software: start in SafeMode, read Woodmeister and see if it is free of issues.
Akamai is crap software needed or not, Huawei the same.
It is very possible that the keygenerator you used for generating a key for some softwares has infected your mac.
The non-regular software with the false key(s) are not compatible probably or generate malware. Luckily you can not update them automatically because the keygenerator blocked the software for contacting the developer... I propose to consider getting rid of those softwares by really good uninstalling.
You have a beautiful mac, don't degenerate it with crapped software. There are alternatives for expensive software, for example Adobe Photoshop has a free alternative (with a less beautiful interface) in GIMP. And so on.

  • I still don't get iCloud

    Hello everyone.
I have been tempted to use iCloud on my iPhone to sync with my Mac and in the future, with an iPad.
I got tired of a 10 hour backup that wouldn't finish so I cancelled it and just decided to wait.
Now that I wanna take the plunge I still don't get how iCloud works, for some scenarios.
For instance, I don't understand the difference between Storage and Backup?
So I don't know if I'm correct to exemplify this scenario:
    iWork's Pages has iCloud enabled.
Now suppose you have an iPhone and an iPad.
On Friday, at 10 PM you make a document (DOC1) on Pages on iPhone and close it. Now you go to sleep and it automatically makes an iCloud Backup since it's plugged to energy and your WiFi is on.
On Saturday, you make another document on Pages (DOC2) on iPhone at 10 AM. Then doing whatever required for it to appear into your iPad (opening Pages on iPad?) you are able to see DOC1 and DOC2 on your iPad.
Now at 2 PM Saturday your iPhone falls down a cliff and explodes into a million pieces. You take your other iPhone (you're rich remember?) and restore it from your Backup (Friday night) so after it's done you open Pages on your "other" iPhone and BANG, you have DOC1 there (since that's the last the backup did), or do you have DOC2 as well since it was saved to the cloud as "Storage" as well??????
Suppose you have an app like AwesomeNote that DOESN'T have iCloud support. What is going to happen? I assume it will only save the settings for the app, but then it WON'T automatically sync to other devices? So basically it will ONLY be useful shall you need to restore from a iCloud Backup but NOT shall you wanna sync your notes between iOS devices?
So as you can see I don't understand the difference between app settings stored on iCloud per developer's enabling (new version of app after iOS 5) and app settings in an iCloud backup.
I still think there is a limbo between commercials and real life. Or maybe I'm just either too complicated, too advanced or too much of an idiot to understand what most people seem to just simply assume and move on with their lives.
Oh and one last thing, could I use iCloud to just save "data" to work in sync with devices (like in the commercial) but ask it NOT to backup anything and just use the old iTunes backup for that? (In which case I'd have to assume iCloud could potentially save in a given timeframe 3 versions of the same settings of an app, two for the backups for your iDevices -iPhone and iPad- and other for just "sync").

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In your opening scenario, you don't need to restore from back up at all. Doc 1 & 2, will be in iCloud, so even if you have to go purchase a new phone and set it up, when you enable iCloud it will push the two docs to your device.
No you don't need to back up to iCloud, you can still use the sync features and continue to back up via iTunes, indeed unless you don't have a computer or have infrequent access to one, I'd recommend this is what you do.
Not sure what happens when you have the same document open at the same time, there is a conflict feature, but I haven't seen how it works yet.

  • What will happen to the stuff in my keychain after today? I don't want iCloud. Can I keep the keychain? in my system?

what will happen to the stuff in my keychain after today? I don't want iCloud. Can I keep the keychain in my system under lion? Can someone please help me?

Thank you Sig. Well I keep all my passwords in my keychain. I'm concerned I'll lose them after today. I understand that keychain will be obsolete after today. I don't want icloud either, because I don't want all my personal info on a server. I want to keep my personal information in my system. Am I making any sense? Can you make any suggestions or offer any insights around this?

  • Slow Macbook Pro- please help, I don't understand previous advice.

    Hello all,
I have a very slow Macbook Pro running on Lion 10.7.3.
I looked up this problem on the forums before I sent this message but I didn't quite understand the advice. I have been on something called Disk Utility and Activity Monitor but don't really understand what I'm looking for. It seems a large percentage of my mac is 'idle' if that makes sense. Someone said to look at Page Out but I really don't understand what that means and what sort of numbers are normal.
I do have some storage left so I don't think it could be that. A lot of my gigabytes seem to be taken up by movies and 'other'. I've tried deleted a load of videos but it hardly made a difference. I have Mac Mail and it seems very slow on my Macbook compared to on my Ipad and iphone. iCal is also very slow on here and it always takes a while to load internet pages. It isnt the wifi connection.
Please help and bear in mind I am by no means a Mac whizz so you might have to talk in layman's terms!
    Thanks,
    Amy

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.

  • HT6312 I don't understand why you are holding our documents captive!

How can you NOT make it backwards compatible!  I prefer not to install the latest IOS (as we've seen what happens, with the last IOS update)  before I am comfortable with the update. This is irresponsible and not customer friendly.  Basically I am S.O.L. if I have an older iPhone or iPad.  Thanks for being so customer friendly.

    James,
Sorry I did not realize it was User to User.  Very funny, really.  Who would you like the check made out to?  LOL
So I went to login to iCloud (on my PC) and I was forced to update to a different version of iCloud that would no longer allow any devices below IOS 8 access to the Pages area.  I just don't understand why thy (Apple developers) cannot make it backwards compatible.

hmm, well I would say that raises the possibility of an issue with your ipad, and lessens one with your router.

I don't understand how to transfer my email contacts from my Windows laptop to my iPhone? What do I need to do?

    Hey wahanz!
In order to sync your Windows contacts to your iPhone, you will need to first create an iCloud account:
Creating an iCloud account: Frequently Asked Questions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4436
You will create the iCloud account on your iOS device, and when you do, don’t forget to turn on contact syncing in the initial setup. Then you will want to download the iCloud control panel for Windows onto your computer and install it:
iCloud Control Panel 3.1 for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1455
Make sure that your contacts are in Outlook, as that is the supported way of syncing your contacts to iCloud, then make sure you have the contact syncing enabled in the iCloud control panel on your computer, and when the contacts have synced, they will be available on your iOS device! Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • I am sorry but I don't understand how to delete photos from my Iphone that were sys from a computer.

I just don't understand how to delete photos from my Iphone placed there by Syc.

Well, if they were synced fomr a computer then the iPhone says the computer "owns" them for instructional purposes.  You have two options.
    1) Plug your iPhone up to any computer with iTunes.  You can get itunes at www.itunes.com  Then tell it to sync photos, but then select no photos or an empty folder.  This will override what the previous computer put on your iPhone.
    2) Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings and say goodbye to everything including those synced photos.  If you make a quick backup first in iCloud (be sure it finishes) then you can restore form your iCloud backup via Wifi and those synced photos wont be there.  How to backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766

  • I don't understand photostream anymore

So. I don't understand photo stream anymore.
I heard people say you could buy more space for photos.  But it doesn't seem to take up any space on iCloud space.  Then i read that it only stores them for 30 days... so does that mean they will automatically disappear from my device?  Whats the deal here?
I'm just really confused as to what is getting saved to the device, and what is getting saved to iCloud.  And the way the albums are named on the device now, just adds to the confusion.
Is the photos icon at the bottom the photo stream?   is it saved locally?   Do I have to worry if the photos are going to disappear out of there after 30 days?
Whats recently added? how recently?   Does this stuff disappear when it's not "recent" anymore?
Apple should have named these folders something self explanatory.

This should help: Get help finding your Photos in iOS 8.  The timeframe for Recently Added (and Recently Deleted) is 30 days.  As far as photo stream, when you take a photo on a device and it's added to your photo stream, it remains in iCloud for only 30 days, allowing enough time for all your devices/computers to connect to your account and download it.  However, it isn't deleted from your devices after 30 days, it's only removed from iCloud.  You can maintain a rolling collection of your last 1000 photo stream photos on your device.  When you reach this limit, the oldest photo is removed as you add a new photo to your photo stream.  Photo stream photos don't use any of your personal iCloud storage.  The storage is provided free by Apple.  Finally, Apple will be launching a new service later this year called iCloud Photo Library.  While details on this haven't been released yet, it will allow you to store all of your photos and videos in a library in iCloud that can be accessed from all your devices/computers, supposedly without having to store the photo/video on your device.  This will using your iCloud storage.  If you use it, photo stream will probably be unnecessary.

  • HT5129 I don't understand this. Why it is doing this.

I hate iCloud! Why has Apple made it impossible to download my photos?
I don't even understand how this **** Apple email works!
Look! I get a notice that tells me my photos were save in MobileSomething and I can't download them onto my phone. And the message is right, I can't load them onto my phone. I really hate iCloud. Its the worst thing that Apple has come up with.
