I don't understand Mail

What would happen if I do not set up an account in Mail at all?
Actuallly, I don't know what Mail does. We have 4 Macs with 4 users and no one has ever used that application. I have .Mac , so sometimes it opens when I hit a "contact "link on a website. My wife hates it because it makes her mail something with my .Mac address, which I also never used.
We check our e-mail on AOL and Yahoo. What does Mail do? Why would we need it? I have a feeling that if I provided no accound info,the app would simply open to the Set-up screen if I hit one of those aforementioned links.
Then , as usual , I would stop, open my e-mail through Yahoo or AOL, and send what I was trying to send. Can Mail make those "contact us" links open our actual e-mail.....instead of Mail?

The Mail.app is an email client (like Outlook Express or Outlook with Windows) that provides access/supports the following account types for receiving and sending messages:
.Mac
IMAP
POP
Exchange
You can access your AOL email account with the Mail.app by creating the account as an IMAP type account.
Yahoo prevents accessing a free Yahoo email account within any email client such as the Mail.app for U.S. residents but if you have a paid Yahoo account, you can create and access the account as a POP type account with the Mail.app.
A .Mac type account in Mail is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way. You can access your .Mac account with the Mail.app and access the account via webmail access on another computer - no different from just about any other email account.
With a .Mac or IMAP type account in Mail and with other email clients, you can store Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages on the server and when accessing the account with the Mail.app on another Mac (such as those with a Desktop in the office and use a laptop when traveling), you can keep all account mailboxes and messages synchronized with the server so all mailboxes and messages will be identical in Mail on both Macs.
IMO, using the Mail.app is much better than using the AOL program or accessing an email account via webmail access using a browser.
Can Mail make those "contact us" links open our actual e-mail.....
instead of Mail?
Sort of....by selecting your browser of choice as the default email reader via Mail.app preferences and making the webmail access website for the email account the default home page for the browser but this will not automatically open and create a new message via webmail access for any email account. This can only be done with an email client such as the Mail.app.

Apparently I don't understand a feature correctly in Mac mail version 6.6

I am a little confused about what the difference is between a new mailbox and a new smart mailbox in mail. I wanted to create one folder that I can put all my mail into so that I can use my inbox as a sort of a "tickler file". I created a new "mailbox" from the little plus sign at the bottom left of the screen and chose "on my mac" and named it "archive". I moved every email from my inboxes (from multiple email accounts) into this. Was this the correct way to accomplish my goal?
Unfortunately I felt uncomfortable about this action and then became confused and tried to undo what I had done by moving them back to the inbox so that I could delete the "archive" "mailbox" I had created. I didn't feel like I had accomplished my goal correctly because I don't understand how this new system of "mailboxes and smart mailboxes" fully works and why there are not just simple folders anymore! I deleted the archive mailbox I had created and it apparently deleted ALL of my emails from off of my mac for only one of my email accounts! What is going on!? I just want to simply be able to organize my email workflow with one simple folder. I don't want to set permissions for this folder or anything. Can someone PLEASE help me understand what the heck I've done wrong and how I can get my emails back into mail from my server?

Your original action is alright but maybe not what you wanted.
A mailbox is a physical thing (a folder) you can add locally to your mac. You can move emails into it and they will leave the IMAP folder they were in and reside on your mac. What's left on the server is your "tickler" file.
Alternatively, you could create an IMAP mailbox called archive and put mail there. Then the mail would still be on the server but in the archive folder. The easiest way to remember this is "An IMAP mailbox on your mac is a copy/cache/clone of the same mailbox on the server" that is why you can see it on all your devices and a change on one means a change to all. If you want access to this "archive" from all your devices, then it needs to be a server IMAP mailbox.
A smart mailbox is really just a filter. It's like a saved search. Mail that meets the search criteria shows up in the smart mailbox. Nothing is moved.

Well as far as I can tell the only developed alternative to Apple is Microsoft, sure you want to go there?
iCloud (and Mobile Me before it) are consumer level systems, working correctly they are a poor choice for business use, if you want to stay all Mac try Zimbra if you can let a little Microsoft in the mix use Microsoft Exchange (Mail, iCal & Address Book are compatible as clients), hosted Exchange systems cost about $10 per month.
Or try to fix what is wrong with your installation (which is clearly not running as it should)

OK and when I run desktop manager then what do I do? There are no instructions after this setup with my mobile carrier, they just leave me hanging. Also, is my phone going to be wiped or will it just update the OS? I don't want to lose all my settings that took me hours to setup on this thing and have to redo everything all over again. Backup? I don't understand how to do that either (again all of this is new to me). I don't have a second phone where I can call T-Mobile on the phone and have them walk me through it, I only have my cell that's it. I think what is happening is that you changed the email address for password recovery to the new one - the Appleid (and software "attached" to it) remain irrevokably linked to the id you purchased it with.

While it is possible you have a faulty unit I'd agree that the menu system took a step backwards with the itunes store centric take 2.0+ software. I think I'm in the minority here though. Apart from the 2.0+ top level interface being butt ugly and confusing to navigate, it simply isn't as responsive as 1.0/1.1 and I think most of this is to do with displaying a combined sync/stream menu. if you sync stuff try setting 'show only synced items' in the AppleTv device tabs in iTunes and see if it makes the issue go away - easy to revert back.
Huge libraries (number of files not actual size of the files) can also be problematic given AppleTV's modest hardware specs but that's more exception than the rule.
With streaming/syncing combined I also think any network deficiencies show up more than they used to.

Slow Macbook Pro- please help, I don't understand previous advice.

I have a very slow Macbook Pro running on Lion 10.7.3.
I looked up this problem on the forums before I sent this message but I didn't quite understand the advice. I have been on something called Disk Utility and Activity Monitor but don't really understand what I'm looking for. It seems a large percentage of my mac is 'idle' if that makes sense. Someone said to look at Page Out but I really don't understand what that means and what sort of numbers are normal.
I do have some storage left so I don't think it could be that. A lot of my gigabytes seem to be taken up by movies and 'other'. I've tried deleted a load of videos but it hardly made a difference. I have Mac Mail and it seems very slow on my Macbook compared to on my Ipad and iphone. iCal is also very slow on here and it always takes a while to load internet pages. It isnt the wifi connection.
Please help and bear in mind I am by no means a Mac whizz so you might have to talk in layman's terms!

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.

I don't understand Calendar in Leapard

I just upgraded to Leapard and I don't understand a few things about iCal.
1. All of my calendars - home, work, etc. - are listed under "calendars" at the upper left corner of the calendar. Then it shows my email address which is a dot mac email with my home calendar under the address and it is a different color square than my home calendar that is listed under calendars. When I try to delete the home calendar under my email address, I get a message that says it is being used to keep my to do's in mail and if I delete it, all of my to do's will be deleted. Why is this? And why is it a different color?
2. Why is my birthdays calendar now listed in subscriptions? What are subscriptions?
3. My calendars are published, do they have to be published if I use dot mac to sync with more than one computer?
4. Since I upgraded to Leapard, when I sync with my iPhone, all of the birthdays in my calendar appear twice in my iPhone. How do I fix this?
If anyone can answer these questions, I would greatly appreciate it.

The following code is exactly the same (I removed the extraneous bit with "o"), but does not use the type parameter when creating the array, so it is allowed. (But type parameters are erased anyway, so effectively it is the same code.) It produces an unchecked warning, and fails at runtime. Can you see why it fails?

was my fault. I had intended it as an example to provide only
minimal syntax where no exception handling whatsoever previously
existed. Beau is a student and I am trying to guide him in the
right direction without just writing all of it for him. In
fact, I am afraid I may have already provided too much code
without sufficient explanation. For you and others who may wish
to help, here are the e-mails that provide the background on how
we got to this point, with the most recent on top, starting with
the last resonse I sent to him:
Things that are wrong:
The instructions say to be sure to use the sequence number for
the student's ID, so you should not have p_stuID as an input
parameter. Instead you should create a variable and select the
student_seq.nextval into the variable from the dual table and
use that value to populate the stuid column.
Your input parameters should only have the variable type, not
the size, so just use varchar2 and number.
The check constraints only belong in the script that is used to
create the table, not in your procedure with your input
parameters, so remove them from the procedure.
The order and number of your columns you are inserting into and
values you are inserting must match, so if you insert into fname
then lname, you need to insert the values p_fname then p_lname.
You must either have first name then last name in both or last
name then first name in both, not one way in one and the other
way in the other.
The idea is that when you execute the procedure you specify the
values of the input parameter variable, then use those input
parameter variables to insert the values into the table. You
should not be specifying any specific values anywhere in your
procedure. In other words don't insert 'HEATHER', instead
insert fname, and so on.
You should only have one insert statement. Each time the
procedure is executed, a different set of values will be
provided, and the same insert statement will be used.
Additional suggestions:
Although it is not required, since IN is the default, it is
generally considered to be a good programming practice to use IN
with your input parameters. It just makes the code easier to
read and understand. As you write other code, you will learn to
use OUT for output parameters and IN OUT for parameters that are
both input and output parameters.
It is generally recommended to store all data in upper case,
that is capital letters, so that it is easier to index and
search and avoid duplicates and so on. In order to ensure that
your data is input in upper case, it is a good idea to use the
UPPER function.
Different programmers and companies have different standards
that they use for capitalization, indentation, spacing,
alignment, and so forth to make their code uniform and easier to
read. You may want to look at some various styles and see what
you like or ask what your instructor recommends.
You should add some sort of exception handling section. For
example, if someone attempts to insert a value for standing that
isn't acceptable, then the procedure will fail due to the
constraints and the student will not be added. You probably
want to display some sort of message to the user. You might
also want to display a message if the input is successful.
When you attempt to compile your program and you receive a
message that says "Warning: Procedure created with compilation
errors." or some such thing, then from the SQL> prompt, type
SHOW ERRORS and it will list the error message number, a brief
description of the problem, and the line of code that the
problem occurred on. You can then type LIST and it will list
the code with line numbers, so that you can tell what line
number the error message is referring to.
In the following example, I have fixed the things that were
wrong, formatted it the way I usually do, and added minimal
exception handling and messages. There is a lot more that you
could do. I have also demonstrated how the program can be
tested and the results of proper input and improper input. In
the example below, two students are added correctly, then an
attempt to add another fails because the standing is not valid
and violates a check constraint, because graduate is not
acceptable. After each execution of the procedure, I have
queried the table, so that you can see what was added and what
was not.

I am not sure what part of it you don't understand.
The first section that you included is a script that you need to
copy and run, in order to create the sequences, tables, and data
that you will need to complete your assignment. You will need
to edit an empty .sql file, copy the script into the file, save
the file, then start the file. For example:
SQL> EDIT test
Type or copy the script and save the file.
SQL> START test
You should see various messages as the items are created. Then
you can use the following commands to see the tables and
sequences that you have created:
SQL> SELECT table_name FROM user_tables;
SQL> SELECT sequence_name FROM user_sequences;
To show the structure of an individual table, for example the
course table:
SQL> DESC course
To show the data in an individual table, like the course table:
SQL> SELECT * FROM course;
In the second section that you have provided, your instructor is
asking you to create three different procedures to do three
different things. To create a procedure, you edit a .sql file,
type the code to create the procedure, save the file, then start
the file. I usually make the .sql file name the same as the
procedure name. So, for example, in number 1, you are asked to
create a procedure named AddStudent, so you would:
SQL> EDIT AddStudent
Type your code.
Save the file.
SQL> START AddStudent
You should receive a message that says:
Procedure created.
Then, to execute your procedure:
SQL> EXEC AddStudent (put your parameter values here)
The basic syntax for creating a pl/sql procedure is:

So, if you are trying to create a procedure to add a new student

I have just given you a starting format and deliberately left

The lab notes from my professor said
1. your system will often need to create a new student. Write
PL/SQL code for an object named AddStudent that will take values
for first and last name, major, standing and GPA and add a new
record in the Student table. Since advisors aren't assigned at
registration time, we'll add their advisor at a later date.
Don't worry about the student's address. Be sure to use the
sequence number for the student's ID.
2. Write a procedure that will retrieve an existing record in
Enrollment usiing the student and section Ids and set the grade
to a specified value. (use update instead of insert)
3. Write another procedure that will assign a given student a
given advisor.

Understanding mail "On My Mac" and "iCloud"

Since the arrival of iCloud, I'm having problems understanding my mail.app mailboxes.
Sometimes I send mail from my phone and it ends up in one mailbox, then I reply on my computer and it ends up in a different mailbox. I don't understand the "On My Mac" and "iCloud" mailboxes. Of course, I know the difference between on my Mac and in the cloud, but why isn't everything the same in all the boxes?
At first, I thought, well, I don't want mail "On My Mac," but then I wouldn't be able to access it if offline. All I want is for my mailboxes to have the same stuff everywhere and not have all these different mailboxes. What am I doing wrong? Am I just not understanding how this works?
Any help would be appreciated. I'm using the latest versions of everything.
These are the screenshots of my email on my laptop and on my phone.

I did goto Preference > iCloud > deselect Contacts. It will ask to delete all contacts "on my mac" and accept it. After a while, I went to Contacts app and manually deleted the rest of entries. I also checked the Contacts on iCloud.com. So the source of Contacts on iCloud.com was only one.
Then I went back to Preference > iCloud > select Contacts and accept "merge". A few minutes later, my Contacts app on my mac are sync with the Contacts on iCloud.com.
I don't have "on my mac" or "iCloud" in my Mac Contacts app.

OK. Many thanks for your quick reply. My son has been trying to talk me into using iCloud for all my mail necessities on the grounds of "why have a Mac and use non-Mac programs....?" My counterpoint is that I happen to have Mac/Apple Mail bringing in my work mail from my university server; I have Hotmail which I use for certain purposes and gmai that handles my more personal mail. To simplify matters, I just open gmail which I have set up to pull in my work mai, my hotmail messages and, of course, my gmail messages...all with one click, basically. This, among other things, allows me to to see my work mail when I am not in town.
Your answer, unless I misunderstood it, tells me that I cannot do the same with iCloud, so thanks for clarifying this.

I can't don't understand code in netbean and it's about Jframe.

i use netbean to design 2 jframe with some buttons on both frame.
frame1 is login form, frame2 is mainform. i want to show loginform then click the button1 to show 2nd jframe.
then i click exit on 2nd jframe and it come back to loginform(frame1).
i do alot of search on the google and here. i know the basic to show a jframe using
setVisible or .show() .hide(), etc..
the problem is what is my jframe variable name in netbean?
i know i can create an jframe object
such as: JFrame frame1 = new JFrame(); etc.. (it's ok if the syntax is wrong for now).
When i use netbean, i drag the Gui components to the Jframe. The jframe is generated by netbean automatically.
When the main program runs, it calls main() method, follow by :

and is new LoginForm() create an object from LoginForm class.

i tried hand-written code, and it looks just fine when design few buttons, labels and textfields.
The adjustment of buttons(labels) are not that good on the frame.
However, when you use IDE, you can drag the button on any spot you like in the jframe.... and in the process not learn how Swing works, and lose flexibility and power. Sorry to sound conceited, but I'll match any of your netbeans-created GUI's with one of my own, and mine will likely be better -- and I'm not all that good at this just yet.

I don't understand what's happening with my Music. All the songs that I purchased, that were previously on my phone, now show up a Cloud next to them, but I can't play them. If I touch the Cloud, it turns into a red square but never downloads.

If I touch the Cloud, it turns into a red square, acts like it's downloading (which I can see happening in iTunes), but never downloads. The Cloud just stays there.
I've sync'd my phone, I've turned it to "show all music" in Settings, I've drag and dropped the songs/albums onto my phone again. I feel like I've tried everything I've seen recommended, but nothing works.
I've purchased a lot of music from iTunes. It should be there. What's going on?

Once you successfully add you iTunes library to iTunes Match, you go to Settings>iTunes & App Store on your iOS device and turn on iTunes Match. Your iTunes Match library will then appear on your iOS device.
