I don't use Mail - how do I get it to stop automatically opening?

Mail opens up all the time, and I don't like using it. I really don't like having to close a million times a day. How do I stop it from opening by itself in the first place? Is that even possible?

Your fan(s) will run at high speed (i.e., loudly) while video is playing, and you can't get around that.
If your fans are not slowing down within 2-4 minutes after CPU- and/or GPU-intensive usage ends, and the application that was showing the video is still running, Quit that application. (In fact, if you're accustomed to Windows, you may not realize that simply closing a Mac application's window does not quit the application. You still need to use the Quit command in the application-name menu. There will always be a bright dot beside or below the application icon in your Dock for each application that is open.) Quit the ones you aren't using, and see whether that allows the fans to slow down without restarting the machine. If that doesn't do the trick, reset the SMC:

  • How do you get ITunes to STOP automatically scanning my hard drives?

    How do you get ITunes to STOP automatically scanning my hard drives for files? I have a number of audio and video files located all over my computer. However, my music folder is located in one place. I only want ITunes to look there to ad music to my IPod? I don't want to add any videos to my IPod however, it automatically scans for this as well. Infact... I don't want ITunes to automatically scan for anything. Why is this doing this?

    You can configure iTunes to sync only a subset of your music. Create a playlist in iTunes of the music you want on the iPod, and change the iPod sync settings. More info is here.

  • How can I get new tabs to automatically open when I click on a new site (rather than replace the existing page I am using)?

    For some reason when i click on to a new site or link, tabs no longer automatically open so if i forget to manually click on the little plus sign at the end of the tab strip, my new destination replaces where i currently was. This was not the case in the past and I cannot find where to reset this so that a new tab will once again auto create. !
    I tried options/tabs: open new windows in a new tab instead, but this did not fix the issue. Can anyone tell me what i need to do get firefox to create auto creat a new tab when i move to a new link rather than replace the one currently in use? Thank you!

    You can middle click a link to open that link in a new tab.

  • How do I get ldapsearch to stop automatically minimizing base-64 encoded results?

    It appears that: when executing an ldapsearch, any result that is base-64 encoded will automatically be decoded.
    In cases of the user password that is an encoded salted hash, it ends up removing the "SHA" from the password value. This is not desired. In other instances of ldapsearch such as linux or sun, there is a flag (-e) for example to actually cause the minimizing of a base-64 value because it defaults to not-minimize. With the ldapsearch on Mac, it's the other way around.
    So how do I get it to not minimize? Here is an example where the password is "base-64" minimized:
    Example 1.
    ldapsearch -b "o=mybase" -LLL -D cn=myAdminName -H "ldaps://ldapserver.anycompany.com" -w mypassword-x "cn=john.smith" userpassword
    dn: cn=john.smith,ou=here,o=mybase
    userPassword:: eolk3ru093jrkahflj90jAFDF3ruiodfanklgh
    Normally, you see the following result where the value of password is not altered:
    Example 2.
    ldapsearch ......<yada yada>
    dn: cn=john.smith,ou=here,o=mybase
    userPassword: {SSHA}IJatTTSrueiovCAPjWWrnmadjfkdfuegjda8923rv==
    In other iterations of ldapsearch such as on Sun (Oracle), you can execute the search with -e flag and it will produce the same result as example 1. (Not what I want).

    QUOTIENT works with integers (or the integer part of a decimal numbers, so what you're seeing it the result of this arithmetic exercise (without the remainder):
    The remainder is provided by the MOD (short for modul0) function.
    Jerry is correct in describing the result you want as the "precise" answer rather than the "exact" answer. While both are the same for your example, the example is a special case.
    Had you spent only a penny more (or a penny less) there would be no "exact" answer to the question "amount" divided by seven. There would be a correct answer, precise to the nearest hundredth of a dollar.

  • How can I get a file to automatically open on startup?

    I have a WORD file with my internet passwords that I want to automatically open when I start the computer. I did this once, but I can't remember how to do it. I've checked the System Preferences and the Finder, but I can't find any way to do it again.

    Add it to the list of login items for your account in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.

  • How can I get pdf documents to automatically open in Adobe rather than Nitro Pro?

    Hi,
    When I bought my PC it had Nitro Pro installed (a paid for PDF programme, that you get for free for 3 months). The free trial has now ended. However, any pdf document I try to open will automatically try to open in Nitro Pro.
    To solve it, I save it to my PC, then ask it to open in Adobe reader. That works, but seems a lot of work. Surely it must be possible to somehow let the pdf doc know that it should open in Acrobat.
    Any suggestions?

    Highlight the PDF, right click and choose "Open with", click on "Choose default program", select Adobe REader then select "Always use the selected program to open this type of file".

  • How do I get Firefox to stop automatically sorting my bookmarks

    I like to do it manually so that the most recent is at the bottom but for the last month or so Firefox has been sorting bookmarks however it wants. Seems to be doing it by whatever is the last added so everything is all over the place. If I move them around they'll stay for a few minutes but then get mixed up again.

    I got this problem too. Everytime Firefox syncs, it seems trying to get the bookmarks in whatever sort it is using server side. So I need to manually sort ALL bookmarks again each time it's doing so. Painful. Plus it is eating my cpu when I sort manually.

  • How do I get rid of two tabs opening when I first open Firefox?

    When I first open Firefox I get my home page in one tab but another tab opens also. That one is set for Facebook. How do I get rid of the automatically opening second tab?

    Do you get both pages if you launch a new window using either:
    * Ctrl+n
    * "3-bar" menu button > New Window
    ''If yes:''
    Check your home page setting to see if you have multiple home tabs. A vertical bar (|) is used between the addresses. This article shows where to check this in the Options dialog: [[Startup, home page and download settings]]. This article has more background on multiple home tabs: [[How to set the home page]].
    ''If no, or if the Options dialog is okay:''
    Add-ons may display tabs at startup or in a new window. If you check the address of the Facebook page, is it the normal Facebook URL ([https://www.facebook.com/]) or a different address?
    Do you have any Facebook-related extensions? You can review, disable, and often remove extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
    In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
    Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?

    Move your cursor way over to the right side of the window. There should be a thin bar. when you hover over the left side of the thin bar, the cursor will change to a vertical bar with an arrow sticking out the left. Click and drag to the left.

    It keeps saying that I used a different computer to access my account. I haven't. How can I get it to stop this so I don't have to enter my card number every time?

    It also says that "your account information has changed. Please review your account and email address and approve them for use in the itunes store." It happens EVERY time I buy a new song, a new album, anything. Even if I buy an album and five minutes later, without closing itunes, buy another one, I have to go through this whole process. It's REALLY annoying.

    I have ePub documents that won't open using iBooks, how can i get them formatted so that I can use them

    You could try downloading a program called Calibre.  It is very good at converting files between formats.  I use it all the time to convert PDF's from work to read on iTunes when I don't want to have to keep zooming in and out to read the actual text.
    I know that iBooks will read PDF's but they can get pretty squashed down some times. Especially if the original font was small to begin with.  So I run them through Calibre and then email them to my phone and open them in iBooks.

  • HELP!!!  Message - (One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?)  How do I get this to stop?

    I bought a new Sony Vaio Laptop running Windows 8, 64bit, i7 processor.  Everytime I open iTunes and then close out, the following message occurs: (i-tunes message - One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?) Then it starts counting down from 20 seconds unless I just click on the (Quit) button.  How do I get this to stop?  Please be specific, I am challenged when it comes down to computers.
    Thank You

    This was extremely annoying for me, also.  I started uninstalling unneeded Sony applications to try to narrow down the problem.  It turned out not to be a Sony application... it is some functionality built into the bluetooth driver software package by Broadcom.  Uninstalling the bluetooth package (via the control panel) takes care of the problem.  Itunes also boots up way quicker.  But uninstalling it will remove features related to bluetooth and nfc.   For me, that isn't an issue, since I don't use them.  Since you said you're "computer challenged" I would probably just send an email to sony complaining about the problem.  They'll get in touch with Broadcom eventually (the manufacture of the drivers) and get the problem fixed.
    Side note: the Broadcom package is huge...  nearly 1GB in size.  Which is crazy.  I can't imagine what it does considering the size of it.  Entire operating systems can take up less storage.  Also, I have no idea how it starts an itunes plugin without placing it into the standard plugin directories.
