I don't want Firefox silently updating add-ons.

I want Firefox 4 to behave like how 3.6 did with add-on updates, or at least similar to it. More, I want it to notify me when an add-on has an update, so then either I can update it. Or, simply notify me that an add-on is updating.
I noticed a menu in the Add-on manager with a check mark on "Update Add-Ons Automatically". If I have that turned off, will Firefox notify me of add-on updates?

I have the "Ask me what I want to do" thing checked. I still don't get notified of updates for add-ons. I'm pretty sure that option is for Firefox updates...

  • I don't want Firefox to update.

    I installed FF 28.
During the installation, I disabled the suto-updater.
At first run, I dsiabled it AGAIN in the config.
And still, it auto-updated to 30.
So, I uninstalled and reinstalled 28.
    And AGAIN it's updated automatically.
    I don't care about ESR.
I don't want to update to the new graphical style.
I don't care if 28 has exploits. EVERY PROGRAM HAS HOLES AND CAN BE EXPLOITED!
So, I'd be grateful if anyone could explain to me why the program updated even after I set it to NOT do it.
    Twice.

    Please do the following
Go to your "Options" then under "Advance" tab you will find at the top a tab "Update" there you will find all the options.
If you turn it off there and it doesn't want to work then i suggest looking for viruses.

Firefox asked me if I wanted to update add-ons and I said yes ... then it was updating it said and then Firefox said I needed to update browser, I then tried to update the browser and Firefox said the it was up to date. I don't understand ... please advise?

If you are using the same computer that you are reporting seeing these messages on as far as I can see Firefox is up to date.

I don't know what else to say about this. It is a screen that comes up in its own window everytime I open Firefox

  • I am considering switching from MIE to Firefox. But I need to use an outdated version (7.3.1) of QuickTime, and I do not want Firefox to update it. If I installed Firefox, how would I prevent this?

Firefox doesn't update plugins like that. The worst you might see is a "nag" from Firefox after an update, about that plugin being outdated; and you can dismiss that "nag" by just closing it.

  • Can't update add-ons, install toolbars or new add-ons, get desktop shortcut icons to work, delete desktop shortcut icons, or uninstall Firefox! Help!

I have Firefox 3.6.3 running on a Toshiba Satellit laptop with Windows XP. I can't update add-ons, install google and yahoo toolbars, get any of the 3 desktop shortcuts to work or delete them, nor uninstall Firefox to try and start over. What a piece of crap! How can I wake up from this nightmare?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems
See [[Basic Troubleshooting|#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile]]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

  • I don't want Firefox to launch every time my computer starts

Every time I restart my computer Firefox launches. How do I disable this? I don't want Firefox to launch ever time my computer reboots. Firefox is not my default browser. Safari is.

  • Does firefox/mozilla test add ons, plug ins and extensions

I am really new to all of add ons, plug ins, etc. I am wondering if these get tested or do you just let anyone submit add ons, plug ins, etc. without knowing they could contain a virus or bug. I don't want to download some add on only to find it just sent me a virus. How do we know they're safe?

Sorry that you had a bad experience with a Firefox add-on, but it's not clear to me whether you downloaded DoNotTrackMe from here - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/donottrackplus/
or whether you got it from the '''abine''' website - http://www.abine.com/donottrackme.html
That makes a '''big''' difference because the version of that add-on which is hosted at AMO is not the same as '''adbine''' is providing at their website. I saved both versions to disk and opened the XPI package of both to inspect the install.rdf file; while the overall XPI file size appears to be the same there are major differences in the install.rdf file - the abine version has its own Update URL listed, where the version at AMO would be updated thru AMO as almost all add-ons hosted at AMO are updated.
Minor difference? Or one that allows '''abine''' to do what it wants after installation?

  • Save my Firefox Plug-Ins & Add-Ons for future use

I want to save my installed Firefox Plug-Ins & Add-Ons so I can install them directly on my second PC. I mean directly, so I don't have to search for them 1 by 1 .
Is there some sort of Export for these?
    Thx

  • Do I have to use add-ons or can I use Firefox savely without add-ons?

Can I use Firefox savely without add-ons? If not, how will I know which add-ons are needed? How save are the add-ons? What if an add-on contains a bug or a mistake? Will I get updates automatically?

Add-ons are optional. I find some of them incredibly useful, but you probably will end up with different ones that suit your needs or interests.
If the add-ons are installed from the Mozilla Add-ons site, then they are checked for updates on a regular basis.
Some add-ons will have bugs or cause conflicts with other add-ons or web sites. You can see the evidence of that on this forum, especially after major upgrades... All that flexibility makes Firefox harder to support, but everyone wants choice. :-)
I should add that much of the web does not work correctly with the Adobe Flash plugin, so maybe that one isn't so optional.

  • Firefox does not open to "maximized" after updating add-ons and performing the restart

After checking for any updates to installed add-ons and, if there should be an update(s) available, and ... after performing the download of the update(s) with a "RESTART FIREFOX" is needed ... Firefox does not restart/reopen to MAXIMIZED. I have to manually maximize Firefox.

This problem ... I suspect ... is only when I am using Windows XP Home w/SP3. This problem does not occur when I use Firefox on Ubuntu (Linux). So now, I don't know if there is a problem with Firefox using Windows XP or that the problem is with Windows XP using Firefox. In any case, I will not just do the extra clicking to maximize Firefox after updating the addons and such. Thanks anyway.
