I don't want my hard drive partitioned

I have an 80 gb hd that was partitioned into 2 separate 40 gb drives. I want to combine them back to their original state. I have everything backed up & am willing to erase the HDs but in the disk utility it will only allow me to erase each one separately. How do I get it back to one 80 gb HD?
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hey afrenette.
I think when you partition you erase and reformat automatically.
So you should be able to go to the Disk Utility and select your Hard Drive from the left side, not select a partition but the Hard Drive itself.
Then go and select partition at the top of the page.
Under Volume Scheme it will say Current but instead select 1 partition.
Then select Partition at the bottom of the page.
Make sure you have definitely backed up all of your info before proceeding.
I hope this helps.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

  • How do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition?

how do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition? the drive is set up into 3 partitions C, HP_tools and, recovery, C has space and would like to move some to HP_tools that is full. when I run backup I get drive full. I have run backup now to an external drive so that is not an issue.

    Hi,
Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk  Management. Please use the following tutorial:

  • Is Removing or Modifying the HP Tools hard drive partition possible?

I am trying to dual boot WIndows 7 Home Premium and Ubuntu. Windows 7 is already installed and I was trying to create a hard drive partition for Ubuntu. However, why I try to create a partition, I cannot create another primary partition because I can only have 4 primary partitions on my hard drive. THe four I have right now are:
    (C
    HP_TOOLS
    RECOVERY (D
    SYSTEM
I was wondering if there was a way to merge any two of these partitions so that I will only have 3 primary partitions. Or would simply deleting the HP_TOOLS partition be wroth it? ANy help would be great.

    Hi MNJC,
Thank you for you inquiry.   I will do my best to assist you.
I understand you would like, a dual boot system and want to know about partitions.  Here is a Microsoft document on  Dual boot windows 7 and windows 8 that I think will help you. Please let me know if you are successful.

  • PB G4, hard drive partitioned

Hello,  My PB G4 has its hard drive partitioned into 4 equal, separate discs.  Can I merge 2 or more of these to make a larger disc?  Thanks.

    Allan,
I "inherited" this partioned disc and computer from my work, from which I've retired, but was allowed to keep.  The IT guy who initially set it up partioned it for reasons that elude me.  My problem is with iPhoto; I have too may pictures and it has used all the space in the partition.  Is it true that the iPhoto app and its picture folder need to be on the same disc? I've been working under this assumption, and this is the reason I need to create a larger disc, by merging 2 or more other discs, to handle the iPhoto picture folder.  I ope this makes a bit of sense.  Thanks again for your help.
       Mike
PS I would fix the optical drive, but I'm hoping to get a newer computer in the not so distant future and will then relagate this old fellow to my wife for her e-mails.

I tried to do the update but it reads that I don't have enough hard drive to do the update. How do clear up space on my hard drive to do the upte????

That is hard to say, as we do not know what you keep on your hard drive.
    To free space
empty the trash, both on your Desktop and the Aperture Trash,
Delete files and folders you do not need
Move files to an external volume.
There are utilities that let you find large files, like Omni Disk Sweeper, but that is not a free application.

  • Hard Drive Partition (I don't get the option to partition)

I recently bought the Satellite Pro u400-142 and have installed XP pro from the recovery DVD. I am trying to partition my hard drive but am having difficulties in doing so. When in disk manager I right click the primary drive to bring up the partition wizard but the option is not there for me to create a partition (it has been greyed out).
Does anybody know why this is and how can I partition my hard drive?

    Satellite Pro U400-142
No surprise there. My guess is that there is no unused space on that drive.
In any case, you cannot use Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) in Windows XP to repartition a drive containing Windows or its boot files. That is for other drives.
Repartitioning is done outside of Windows, ordinarily with third-party software. I just repartitioned a laptop's disk containing Windows XP in order to add Windows 7. I used this free partition manager.

For what purpose do you wish to repartition the drive?

  • External Hard Drive Partition, Erased Files. HELPPPP!

Something went wrong and has now "erased" all my files on my external hard drive (used for backing up with TM), after adding a partition second partition. I did not install anything onto the newly created partition as my focus was then distracted by the fact that all my data had now been erased.
This should not have happened as I followed every step carefully and thoroughly from this link: http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU3.html
I wanted to boot Snow Leopard from my external hard drive. So I used Disk Utility to add a partition on my external hard drive (clicking the + sign). The drive had around 264 GB (shaded in blue), with approximately 34GB free. So I type the newly desired partition of 8GB. Disk Utility was saying explicitly that "this partition will not be erased", referring to the original partition of 264GB that will become approximately 272GB, the one that contains all my files. I say to myself, okay, that is safe as it is telling me my files will not be erased.
With the partitions split and my original data of 264GB still shaded in blue, I click apply.
A box prompts me to confirm partition, reading:
"Partitioning this disk will change some of the partitions. No partitions will be erased"
    This partition will be added:
    "Snow Leopard HD"
    This Partition will be resized:
    "My Passport"
So obviously I confirm and click Partition...
It took about 30 seconds or under to partition and then I noticed my original partition was no longer shaded in blue but was completely empty
I open my external hard drive in Finder and none of my files are visible.
I open Time Machine and it is not displaying any of my back ups and will no longer back up. Its says Latest Backup: Failed i
So I click on the i button and it says:
    Time Machine Error
The backup volume could not be found.
At this point I am panicking! I followed every step correctly and it clearly stated no files would be erased.
What has happened here? and how can I retrieve my lost files?
Disk Description : WD My Passport 071A Media
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partion Table.

  • How do I create a bootable hard drive partition?

    Hello,
Would someone out there be kind enough to give me step by step instructions for creating a partition on my external hard drive that I could use to boot my computer in the event of an emergency? I understand how to use Backup for my files, but I want to know how to make the hard drive bootable, as well.
    Thanks!
    Eli Garfinkel

When you say step by step I'm guessing you're saying you are a little inexpierenced so I'm going to give it to you very thoroughly.
First: If you are not using this external HD for anything else then there is no need to partition and you should skip to "Making Bootable Clone"
    "Making the Partition":
    1) Plug in the external HD.
    2) Launch Disk Utility
    3) Click on the ext. HD in the left hand column
    4) Click on the Partitions tab.
    5) Create the number of partitions by clicking the dropped down menu under "Volume Scheme"
5a) The partition that will be the bootable one should be as big as the internal HD.
    6) Format it as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    7) Check the Mac OS 9 Drivers...just in case.
    8) Click the Partition button in the bottom right and let DU do its work.
    "Making Bootable Clone"
-I highly recommend you buy the $27.95 copy a SuperDuper! (shirtpocket.com)
-It will allow for easy incremental backups, which can be done each day, that will keep you up-to-date.
    1) Once you've downloaded SuperDuper! & have the disk partitioned open SuperDuper!
    2) In the "Copy" box select your internal HD.
    3) In the "to" box select the partition.
    4) Make sure "using" says "backup-all files"
    5) Select "Options" button and under the "During Copy" make chose the first option. This erases the partition and then copies the internal onto the external.
-After this is completed you can continue to do this, daily. The only difference is you'll have to change the "During Copy" in the "Options" button to the second option. This is the "Smart Update".
-A Smart Update will delete or create files on the ext. HD so it mirrors the internal. The results is the ext. HD is exactly like the internal and it only takes 10-15min. You ext. HD will always be up to date then. You can run this every night.
-This will result in an exact clone and you can boot form this partition if you ever need to.

  • Can I make an additional hard drive partition with a boot camp partition on my mac?

    Hi.
I have installed boot camp and now I want another partition for a second install of Mavericks. Can I make another partition for this without messing up Windows 8.1?

Is it dangerous to use an external HD to boot from? The guy at Circuit City told me it was.
One danger of using an external hard drive as a boot drive, is the connection is not as reliable as an internal hard drive. The other is the mistaken assumption that just because it is separate, or not part of the computer, that it is safe. The only true safety comes in numbers. You should always backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
2.5" hard drives are a little less reliable than 3.5" hard drives because of the smaller parts involved. Mac Minis have 2.5" hard drives, whereas other desktop Macs have 3.5" hard drives. Whether the reliability of Firewire or USB over SATA or Parallel ATA on 2.5" is enough to offset this difference is hard to say. Having enough backups ensures you don't have to be surprised when you find out in your situation.

  • Want bigger hard drive and replace boot camp with parallels

Bought the 15" MBP on day one now more than two years ago. The 80 gig hard drive is nowhere near enough now and having to essentially shut down to run boot camp no longer works (I'm an accountant and need to be able to flip back and forth quickly).
    Two questions:
    1) Can I add a much bigger hard drive to my original version MBP?
    2) If so, can I expand my pitiful 5 gig boot camp windows partition to, say, 20 gig and have parallels run it without having to reinstall all the windows programs?
That would be my perfect world, is it possible?

Are you under warranty? If so, you would probably want to get an Apple authorized repair shop to replace the hard drive so you don't risk voiding your warranty. But you can replace it with a much larger one, like the 320 GB Western Digital or the 500 GB Samsung if you can find one. There is another thread on this forum concerning the 500 GB drives. Not all 500 GB drives will fit in a 15" MBP--some are too tall.
Not familiar with either boot camp or parallels, but with the bigger drive, you should be able to easily have a bigger partition for windows. As to whether you would need to reinstall the windows programs, someone more familiar with windows would have to address that part of your question.
    Good luck!

  • Maxtor hard drive: Partitions and erasing?

I have a Maxtor hard drive that is currently partitioned 1/2 for Mac and 1/2 for windows.......i just got a new mac so i don't need the windows 1/2 anymore. Can I erase everything from the windows 1/2 and reformat it for mac without deleting any of the data stored on the mac 1/2???
It does say in disk utility that it will erase all the data on the particular volume (which would be the windows formatted one?)
i don't want to lose anything that's on the mac partition of the hard drive.
    thanks!
    zack

Erasing one partition of a hard disk won't affect anything on the other partitions.

  • Imac duo hard drive partition

I have my new imac 20 duo arriving tomorrow & plan on installing windows. This is my first mac in 12 years and I intend to partition the hard drive to 30 gigs for windows xp. I only want to use the pc for photoshop cs2 and ms office and a few other pc programs but not to access the internet except for updates. On the 30gig pc side is it better to use fat32 or nfts?? Since I have these programs I hate to scrap them. Any ideas will be appreciated. Jim Johnston

That should be more than enough. I have a laptop at work, with notes, Oracle Developer Tools, and a number of other programs, all on a 15 GB partition. Just make sure you don't want anything else. Once you create the partition, there is no way to change it with out wiping it out.

  • Equium l40 - 10Z. Hard Drive Partition Help

A family member has a Toshiba Equium L40 - 10Z. The "Vista (C:" drive is full with a total size 55gb, but there is also an "Data  (E" drive with a total size of 54gb on it which is almost empty (Someone installed the game Sims on it)
Now the problem being is that there is around 20GB worth of music linked into Itunes set up on the C drive, and they want to download more and keep it all togehter on the same drive.
Is there anyway to make the C drive bigger? I.e. remove / alter the partition size between the C and E drive?
Or do you have any better options?
As I don't realy fancy moving all the music and having to tell itunes where all the individual songs are located.
    Many Thanks

A bit more thought give to the situation, I can probalby just use Itunes to move the whole Itunes media folder over to the E: Drive. Which shouold mean it would recognise the files automaticaly.
But Is there still any need to have the Hard Drive so largly seperated? If at all?
