I don't want to delete my HD!

I'm trying to install Leopard on my MacBook but don't have the means to back-up and erase my hard drive. Yet, at the initial installation screen, it insists that I do just that. I've read the article on the website about this issue but I want some clarification before I proceed and severely screw up.
I've checked the disk utility in the installer which states something about having the incorrect number of extended attributes. I don't quite understand how to change this as when I insert the sudo /usr/sbin/fsaclctl -p / -e code into the terminal, it won't let me input my password. Perhaps I am using the terminal wrong.
Also, when I verify my disk in the installer, the discretions that pop up on the list are either flash player plug-in related or hp printer related. Should I try erasing flash and hp printer files?
Thanks!

When Leopard boots it checks all connected bootable devices.
If it finds a problem on a device it tries to fix the problem.
If it fails to fix the issue or would have to repair an issue which would perhaps deny you access to your drive if it failed it marks the drive as needing repair.
If you then enter the installer and try to choose that drive it will give you a message telling you that it can only perform an erase and install.
This warns you that you would lose all data.
This gives you the option to save your data.
There is damage to your directory structure.
I would remove the plugin and the HP printers folder, restart the computer and try to Verify Disk.
If it verifies then you should be able to do an update or Archive and Install.
If it doesn't then you need to either erase and install, Repair Disk after a data backup or risk a Repair Disk without a data backup.
Your choice?
