The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Additionally, your 24 hours don't start until you begin to watch the movie, you have 30 days to start watching the movie.

  • HT1657 What happens when you rent movies and they don't play? How come that question is not on the list?

What happens when you rent movies and they don't play and you tried getting credit for it?  I rented two movies which they were very very old movies in black & white and they both don't play.  I never had this problem before even when downloading videos. Now how can I get credit for it?  I contact itunes a number of times and no one has done nothing as of yet.  Itunes also asked me for my order number which I sent them but still no credit.

Great question MommaBof4! This is actually something that can be completed. VZW does have the option to turn this feature on or off based upon the users request. If you would like to update this feature on your device please give us a call by dialing *611 send from your VZW device, thanks!

If you are positive it's not actually a 5G iPod Video, then you should be able to.

  • Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later."

Can't play rented movies.  They appear to download OK and the timer accurately reports days remaining to watch.  But whenever I try to play the movie I get this message, "An error occurred loading this content.  Try again later.". Have been using the Apple TV for 2 weeks and everything else seems to work OK.  The Apple TV reports its SW is up to date.  I've tried this with two movies rented frim iTunes directly from the Apple TV.

If after you download the movie, you navigate away and do something else with your Apple TV the content you have downloaded will be overwritten and you'll need to download it again. It's a pain in the neck for many who have slow downloads but it's something that comes with using volatile memory rather than a hard drive for storage.
Perhaps you're not doing this, but I thought it worth mentioning.

  • HT204370 If I pause a rented movie and then try to resume play, I am told that the movie has not been downloaded and to go to iTunes in the menu and download it.  There is no download section showing and the search for rentals option produces nada...

When I pause a rented movie and then try and finish watching it, I am told that I have already rented this movie and it has not been downloaded.  I am instructed to go to iTunes on the AppleTv menu, but there is no download section on any menu and search for rentals only gives me a continuous spinning wheel?

The time it takes to load is dependent on your network. Rentals made on ATV won't be available on any other device.
What is your current connection. Use speedtest.net
Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network)
    If on wifi try Ethernet
Go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise

  • I've downloaded a rented movie and transferred to mi ipod touch but can't find it on the device - where do I find it to play

I've downloaded a rented movie and transferred to my Ipod touch but can't find it on the device to watch it - where do I find it?

    Hi,
Have you tried using your iPod's Search function to find the movie?  (The Search function is to the left of the home screen.)
    Hope this helps!

  • I recently downloaded a movie with an avi extension, I changed it to .m4v and then tried to import it into iTunes but never goes through the importing process and it never shows up.

I recently downloaded a movie with an avi extension, I changed it to .m4v and then tried to import it into iTunes but never goes through the importing process and it never shows up.

    That WON'T convert it.
If I do the same with an MP3 and change the extension to JPG, it DOESN'T make it a picture. It makes it unusable.
Change it back to AVI and download "Handbrake". http://handbrake.fr/
Use HandBrake to "convert" it to M4V.

  • When will my Classic ATV be updated, so I can rent movies and use netflix?

When will my Classic ATV be updated, so I can rent movies and use netflix?

I can understand the Netflix issue due to slower processor, but I can't understand it wouldn't be featuring renting tv-shows for 99, since its essentially the same technology which is already existing in the box. Do you know if 99c renting is also exclusive to new model?

  • When you rent a movie and downlaod it do you need internet to watch it

when you rent a movie and downlaod it do you need internet to watch it

In the interest of full disclosure, I can tell you that I have gotten inconsistent results from this. There have definitely been times when I have a fully downloaded iTunes rental and have gotten a message saying an Internet connection is required for authentication when trying to view it offline. Last week, however, I did the same and had no problem watching one without Internet. Perhaps they changed the policy recently, or else there is a bug somewhere in the system.
Do note, however, that the following Apple support article states that an Internet connection is needed to authorize playback of movie rentals on the iPad:

  • Rented movies and Ipod nano 3rd gen.

I believe the ipod nano 3rd gen allows for rented movies.
so I should be able to sync my rented movies to my ipod easily.
However, when I go to the movies section under sync, the rented movies tab does not show? Something I'm doing wrong? (I believe before I saw the rented movies tab before, it stopped showing though) or does apple just suck?

Yes, the 3rd gen Nano supports rented movies. There is no separete tab for rented movies. They show up in the regular Movies tab. You can't sync them, though, only transfer them from one device to another as you can only have them on one device at a time per terms of rental.
With your Nano connected, click on the movies tab. You should see two boxes at the top. In the left hand box should be all of the rental movies you have on your computer. There should be a button between the two boxes that says, I believe, "Transfer" (don't have any rental movies so I can't say absolutely). Select the movie you want to move to your Nano and press transfer.
And by the way, your last comment almost resulted in me not even bothering to try to answer your question. Rudeness really has no place here (or anywhere, in my opinion). Everyone here is a fellow user, a volunteer.
    Best of luck.

  • I am getting the following error during the play of a rented movie from my MacBook that i am trying to watch on AppleTV Could not play the rental "A Thousand Words" because it is authorized to play on another computer or device." any ideas?

I am getting the following error during the play of a rented movie from my MacBook that i am trying to watch on AppleTV Could not play the rental “A Thousand Words” because it is authorized to play on another computer or device." any ideas?

Rentals can only play on one device/computer at a time.  Have you tried to play on the computer and still have that window open?
Have you transferred the rental to iPod/iPhone or iPad to watch?

  • HT1657 Hi, at the moment I can only seem to watch a rented movie once - previously I used to be able to watch it as many times as I liked during the 48hr window.  Anyone else have this problem?

Hi, at the moment I can only seem to watch a rented movie once - previously I used to be able to watch it as many times as I liked during the 48hr window.  Anyone else have this problem?

    This doesn't seem right.
I paid for a rental and downloaded an HD movie, Avatar. I could start watching within about a minute, it played without skipping a beat.
My wife started watching the movie the next night and got about half way through.
The next day, she tried watching the rest, and selected the film and clicked on "resume watching".
But instead of streaming and playing like it should, we got the spinning wheel of death followed by a message "Ready to play in 1 minute" which soon became "Ready to play in 2351 minutes"!
Additional information that I can add is that it was Sunday afternoon which is peak time for internet usage and I'd just exhausted my data allowance before the speed limiting kicks in. Basic internet using browsers at that time was really slow.
So it was as though the movie we were going to resume watching was going to be downloaded from the iTunes Store again, and since my connection had been speed limited, it was going to take forever. I thought you downloaded a rental to your hard drive and it deleted itself after it expired? So any subsequent streaming to AppleTV would be coming direct from your hard drive. It shouldn't have been affected by the speed of my internet connection at that time, surely. Anyone else experienced this?
Actually, I just noticed this post, I'm sure it's related...:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12398832&#12398832

  • HT1657 Once I download a rented movie, do I need WiFi access in order to watch it?

Once I download a rented movie, do I need WiFi access in order to watch it?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.

  • HT1657 Once rented movie is downloaded, how do I find it to watch?

Once rented movie is downloaded, how do I find it to watch?

I just rented a movie on my iPhone 4 and wanted to transfer it to my MacBook Pro. I then read Apple's FAQ and learned this:
Can I play my rental on more than one device?
*If you download a rented movie on your computer:* You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch (4th generation), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
*If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation), or Apple TV:* It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
