    * What error do you get?
    * What kind of connection are you on? Wifi? At home? At a school / university?

  • I've tried to troubleshoot downloading Firefox but it won't open on Windows XP. The Firefox Update box with the hour glass symbol runs for hours. Then I have trouble even shutting down. When I click on Firefox, no window, program won't quit, etc....

Windows XP. I used to use Firefox and it worked okay. I'm not sure why I downloaded a new version but it won't open. The window that says "Firefox Update" continues to try to load. Hour glass symbol, for hours. If I try to click on the Desktop symbol, Nothing. Then when I try to shut down, it's slow, programs won't quit, or it freezes. I've removed Firefox completely and tried downloading again with the same results. Even with the latest version. Shit. Whassup?

Hi zenithtwc, to test whether this is a settings issue, could you do a three-minute experiment?
    '''Create a new Firefox profile'''
A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
''Don't delete anything here.'' Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like Test731, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
    Can it reach the internet?
When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

  • Upgrade failed, it corrupt my Firefox and now won't open at all???

I just received a notice this a.m. to upgrade Firefox. I accept it and followed the defaults. Now, FF won't open at all.

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Firefox and Safari won't open

I updated my mac a couple days ago and now nothing works.  Safari and Firefox the wheel just spins.  Chrome shows me the page then freezes and saids unresponsive.  Mail works.  Can not open system preferences.  Have rebooted 5 or 6 times.    Was wondering if I should try and download mountain lion,  but not sure I could.

Upgrading to a newer OS X in most instances won't fix a browser issue, combined with the fact you can't open System Preferences, that's an indication that the startup disk needs repairng.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.
Instructions here >  Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
If the startup disk appears to be ok, restore OS X from the instructions at that link.
Backup all important data before restoring OS X.

  • Firefox and Utilities Won't Open

Suddenly, Firefox stopped opening. When I try opening Utilities like Activity Monitor to see what's up and Disk Utility to repair permissions, they refused to open too. Other programs - Word, Safari, etc., open no problem. I also noticed that my GPU, which had been running @ 77 centigrade, was up to 85. Other temps:
    CPU Core 1: 67
    CPU core 2: 67
IStat shows User CPU at 100%, with Safari, my only open app, at 100.5. When I had Word open, it was at the same time also showing 97%. My computer thinks it's a high school football coach: "You gotta give two hundred percent!"
I ran rebuild on Disk Warrior from the CD, which found one error, but it made no difference.
    Things I've changed recently are:
4 days ago, old 22" Cinema Display went dead. I was running two, and the other was on its way out, so I replaced with a pair of 23" Samsungs. No problems with that initially, but when I see higher temps with the GPU, I wonder if there's a connection.
This afternoon, I tried installing SafariStand, which first required installing SIMBL. When I started having problems, I backtracked and deleted SIMBL from the input managers, but it hasn't helped.
Final difference is that Firefox installed an automatic update. With the Firefox problem, I tried trashing the plist - no help - then the app itself and downloaded a fresh copy - also no help.
I've got my system and apps on one hard drive and my data on the other.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

Try each step in order, checking as to whether the issue is fixed before moving on.
    1. Safe boot (hold shift at the chime until the spinning gear) and run your preferred housekeeping utility; Onyx, Cocktail or whatever.
    2. Delete plist files for affected apps.
    3. Reset PRAM. Hold Cmd-Alt-P-R at the chime until it chimes again. Keep holding it down for a total of 4 chimes.
    4. Reset NVRAM. Hold down Cmd-Alt-O-F at the chime until you get an open firmware prompt. Type:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
    It will reboot.

  • I keep getting an alert when I launch Firefox and it won't open websites. Alert below

Get this alert when I try to open new version Firefox I just downloaded. I trashed the old version and re-downloaded and installed new version. Alert meaage: Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. * "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
    * "Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Hanging on startup- Firefox and Chrome won't launch.

My MacBook Pro is hanging on the startup screen with the Apple.
I am wondering what else I can try to resolve this.
*It finally booted in Safe Mode- but the screen froze with only a Finder window open.
*Restarted it normally and it finally booted.
*To get it to restart the next day- I had to boot in Safe Mode- it froze again- and then it booted normally.
Other troubles: Safari is the only browser that will launch. Firefox and Chrome won't open, although the Apps are running, no window ever opens.
    Here's what I've tried:
    *reset PRAM
*ran Disk Utility - repaired permissions, verified the disk- everything checked out ok- button to repair disc wasn't an option.
I've noticed the boot time had been taking longer over the past couple of weeks... shutdown has been taking longer, too.
Apple replaced the Logic Board on this machine in July.  Could my current problem be related?
    Thanks.

The G5 is a PPC Mac. Chrome and Fx require an Intel (architecture) processor.

I have Firefox version 3.6.22 (Mac) & keep downloading Firefox 6.0.2 for Mac (as prompted) to my new Macbook Pro, running Lion (OS 10.7.1) and it won't open and install. WTF?

something similar has been happening to me for a a couple weeks (even before the most recent update, but now is definitely worse) on my 2010 MacBook Air. Firefox freezes upon startup, and then freezes maybe every twenty minutes or so when I'm actively using it, staying frozen for at least a minute or two. it drives me crazy.

I downloaded Firefox 4 and it won't open unless I open Thunderbird first.

Thank you.  I noticed that the file on my computer was not as large as it was supposed to be, so I downloaded it first thing this morning and was able to open and install it.  Thanks for the help to all.

  • When I click on an active link from another application, it opens the firefox application, but won't open open the page - it just opens Firefox or takes me to Firefox. No new tab or window is opened and the link is not displayed.

Firefox sent an email to me to confirm that I had asked the above question. The email had a link to click. When I clicked it from Firefox, nothing happened. Then I opened IE, signed into Comcast, opened the email, clicked the link, and it brought me here.
