The iPod can play MP3 files, so that's not the problem.
It sounds like you're accessing the iPod as a disk drive, and copying files in Windows Explorer.
This is not the way to put music on your iPod. You have to install iTunes on your computer, and put your music in iTunes. Then you can use iTunes to select the music you want on your iPod.

Thanks but I had already read this, and it was no help at all. Under the Summary tab, "Options", there is no check-box to manually manage my stuff. I suspect this is because it is a 2nd gen iPod, with ONLY manual management. The only way to delete my stuff seems to be to reset the entire device.
I like to listen to podcasts. What is particularly frustrating is that the 4th gen shuffle CANNOT play podcasts, but ONLY music, which I discovered after a lot of research and multiple visits to an Apple store. Have you restored the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod? If so then you have a hardware problem. Maybe a loose/brken connector or maybe something else.

How do I download legacy apps onto iPod 4th Gen?

I understand that since last Sept Apple has allowed users of old ios versions to download the 'latest compatible version' of an app. I have a 4th Gen iPod touch running ios 6.1.6 and cannot download some of my purchased apps. I know that legacy versions are available, because I used to use them on my iPhone 3GS. Instead of allowing me to download the last compatible version, I get a dialogue box that says I must update to ios 7.0 or later.
Any ideas? I have already purchased the apps via iTunes. I also have looked for my old .ipa files - no luck.
Could it be because I'm in Canada?

I do not really understand what you are doing to get them from the iPod to the computer.
First import them to the computer by:

I have an iPod Touch 4th Gen. And I broke the screen, the sent it in to get fixed... the people put the screen on wrong. It worked for a while, then it stopped working. I was trying to use it one day, and I accedentaly put on the curtain mode. So now, I have an iPod Touch with the I can't use. I haven't sent it in yet though. Do you have a current backup of the content of your iPod? If not restoring will remove Apps and their data. The Apps can be replaced at no charge but the data will be lost.

This can sometimes be the result of a faulty/damaaged USB sync cable. Do you have another cable you could test it out with?

i pluged my ipod into the wall,computer and my xbox and wont charge. when it dies it says to connect charger and when i connect it the power icon pops up and it starts charger but when it turns off it says "less than 20% battery power".
