I installed the new version thinking it would be the same, It was horrible! uninstalled it... Installed the older version and now it won't open and when I try it says it can't because the library can't open because it was used on a newer version. Come on! I just want my music! How do I open this and get my music back.

I don't know whom to thank first-- b noir for telling me about the Lorraine fix or Lorraine for figuring out the fix. THE LORRAINE FIX WORKED FOR ME!!! (I feel a little like I am advertising "Hooked on Phonics" with that last line!)
Thank you doesn't say it strongly enough, but THANK YOU b noir and Lorraine for your help. I was to the boiling point last night and starting to get there tonight. Now I am resting easy and thankful that there is a community of computer users out there who care enough to troubleshoot problems together and work together to figure out a solution--and then to take the time to post and share information.
I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone who is having the iTunes issues where iTunes just plain won't open at all after downloading the newest version and has a pc with Norton Internet Security 2005 try the "Lorraine Method."
I am so happy I think I might sing. Or not--I will let my songs on iTunes do the singing for me now that I can again!!!!!!!
And to those still looking for answers--be patient--I now know how incredibly frustrating this can be and I hope that you all find your solutions very very soon!!

I was notified of an update to itunes when I opened it on my PC this morning. I agreed to the update. The update did not finish and now I can't open itunes on the PC. I tried "repair" in the control panel to no avail. HELP!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version, or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

backup your iPhoto and install iPhoto 9.6 - if you had iPhoto '08 or earlier then you need to download and run the iPhoto library before launch iPhoto 9.6
If that does not help then you actually need to tell us information and details - like version of iPhoto. exactly why you can not access your photos and any message you got

good diagnosis, iWonnaMac. your version of this is almost certainly going to be due to an incompatibility between your QuickTime and Windows Update KB908531 on Server 2003 systems.
for some more info and background on troubleshooting that beast, see:

if you decide to go the "uninstall KB908531" route with this, strongly consider implementing one of the three workarounds described in the "vulnerabilty details" section of the following security bulletin:

  • Just reinstalled iPhoto and now it won't open the photos I saved on CDs

I recently had a major hard drive crash and had to get a new hard drive. I was so glad that I had all my photos backed up on CDs. But when I reinstalled the software, I can't get iPhoto to open the CDs. I get a message that says the photo libraries were made using a newer version of IPhoto. The only version I have is the version that came with the computer which was iLife 05. I have not yet bought iLife 06 due to finances. The only thing I can think of is that there were updates to the 05 version that I had downloaded and now the original version will not open my files. I tried clicking on update the software, but all I got was an ad for 06. Is there any way to get the updates for 05 so I can get back to where I was before the hard drive gave out?
    Thanks,
    Carole

    That's a bummer.
Here are the instructions for creating a new library. It will get you your photos back for now. Save the CDs in case a solution comes up.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Downloaded Safari Update and Now Safari Won't Open

This past Sunday I was informed that I needed to download an update for Safari. I did this (during a major thunderstorm, but never lost power) and everything seemed to go through properly and worked normally. I restarted my computer when it prompted me to do so. A couple hours later I tried to get on the internet and nothing happened. The icon bounced a couple times and Safari's name popped up at the top of my computer next to the apple icon, but no window opened. I tried to hit open new window and so on....when I got frustrated and quit Safari it told me me that I had like 7 windows open and did I still want to quit. I clicked yes and then another window popped up stating that Safari encountered a problem and needed to close unexpectedly. I reported it to apple like 12 times. When I called apple they expected me to pay for them to fix it, even though his explanation was "This version of Safari is probably not compatible with Tiger". The other issue is that my disc drive went bad a couple years ago and I never fixed it, so I could not re-install the original Safari. Can anyone help me fix my internet without having to pay a computer store??

    HI,
If the optical disk is broken, then you can't use your install disk to repair the startup disk if necessary.
    Try booting in Safe Mode
It takes a little longer then a normal boot. Once you are in Safe Mode launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    Click Verify.
At least this way you will know if there are problems with your startup disk before trying to troubleshoot Safari.
When you are finished click the Apple Menu / Restart.
Also I was able to delete my cache and now I can make an attempt to open a new tab, but then it immediately closes and gives me the unexpectedly had to quit message this time with a new number at the end of that KERN blah blah blah one and that number if it helps is 0x0000000c
If the startup disk is ok, post a crash report.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

  • Just downloaded the new iTunes and now iTunes won't open at all.  MacBook Pro user

Downloaded the new iTunes a few hours ago, and now after a few restarts, I get no response at all when clicking on itunes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Just tried to install the recent updates and now Mac won't boot.

Clicked restart and was presented with a screen that said "none of the software updates could be installed, an unexpexected error occured" I clicked OK, was was left wi a blank screen that did nothing. So I powered down, and restarted, now I'm presented with a UnIx screen indicating "unable to find driver for this platform" and a window instructing me to restart.
Restarting in any mode, shift, command, command s, etc will not move me past the Mac OS version not yet set screen.
This is a mess. I installed Lion over the Internet and do not have a startup disk I can use to recover and reinstall to even restore from my Tme Capsule ... Isn't there a way I can install over the Internet?

Holding down Option seemed to get me into recovery mode, where I was able to run disk first aid, to repair the disk and permissions.
It repaired dozens of permissions, and stated the HD was OK, but restored boot drivers.
However, I still cannot startup, getting the exact same message.
At this point should I restore from my Time Capsule, or should I reinstall Lion and then restore from my Time Capsule?
Or is there any other way to recover at this point?
