are you getting an error message, Odessa? if so, what does it say? include error message numbers if you're getting any.
if you're not getting an error message, describe what happens when you try to transfer songs to the ipod as best you can.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad: File>Transfer Purchases

You have already seen that you cannot load the new iTunes into your 10.5.8, so as Neil says, you need Snow Leopard (current cost £14). And you'll probably need to update the disc you buy via the combo update, though that is free.
As far as the new iTunes is concerned, there's been a certain amount of grumbling so you may want to study the forums before you update. The main problem has been with album artwork which does not transfer easily.

Does anyone know how to do this without having to close iTunes and re-open it - which is a silly way to have to do things. Has anyone else noticed that the more successful Apple gets, the harder it is to follow the logic of their software? Is it all the new developers who have forgotten how to write stuff that people over 25 years old used to use Mac? It is driving me mildly crazy.

Yes at the top right is a button labelled Library. This will close Itunes Store and take you back to your music.
Sone other tips are
Enable the sidebar by view Show Sidebar - makes it more like itunes 10
Enable Staus Bar to see inf about your songs etc at the bottom

Which particular .msi file does the message go on to say can't be found? (Several different .msi files can be mentioned in this context: itunes.msi, bonjour.msi, AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi, etc.)
