I dragged OS X mountain lion off my dock

When I was on safari, I accidentally dragged OS X mountain lion off of my dock when it was downloading. When I re-download it of the App Store, it's not showing on the dock. Can anyone help?

Choose Applications from the Finder's Go menu and open it or drag it back to the Dock. The download may need to finish before this can be done.

Go to the  menu/About This Mac - what OS version shows there?
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X
Revert to Snow Leopard
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

The App Store will permit you to purchase Mountain Lion regardless of whether your MacBook Pro already had it installed when it shipped from Apple.
If you bought Mountain Lion from the App Store, you will be able to install it on as many additional Macs as you may have. If you only have the one Mac and have no plans to acquire any others that did not ship with Mountain Lion, then there was no need to purchase another copy.

Dragging windows in Mountain Lion apps

I have found that document windows in Preview and TextEdit in Mountain Lion cannot be dragged around if a dialog sheet is open. I haven't tested every Mountain Lion app. Terminal does not have this problem, nor do iTunes or Safari.
So when I go to save, and I expand the save sheet to column view, and the columns extend off the screen, I can't move the document window. This can leave columns and buttons permanently offscreen.
My current workaround is:
- Escape key to cancle the save/open.
- Move the window.
- Retry the save or open and see if the offscreen control or display is now onscreen.
iMac7,1 running 10.8.2.
I also spent a good 15-20 minutes looking for a bug report page instead of using the community discussions to report this.

I wouldn't report it as a bug quite yet, though. Personally, I can't reproduce the issue as you describe it, not in Preview nor in TextEdit. In both cases, when the sheet opens and I choose to expand the window (using the arrow in the top-right; you call it Column view) the sheet expands and, if a side would move off the screen, pushes the whole window further into the display so that the whole sheet appears.
But it sounds odd that your sheets are so broad as to move off the side of the display anyway—have you thought about just resizing them so that they aren't so broad? It's just like resizing any other window.

HT2476 Can't drag files in mountain lion.

Hi there... I am in serious need of help.
I clean installed Mountain Lion no problems, everything seems to be a little quicker even... .a bonus.
But then I stumbled across something.
I am unable to move or drag files around.
Let's say I have a file jpg in the desktop, and I want to move it to the pictures folder... Normally I would just hold down the trackpad, and physically move it in to the open pictures finder... but it just will not move. I can select it, open it, rename it, everything... but I just cannot drag anything anywhere.
Lets say the jpg on my desktop needs work and I want to open it in Photoshop. I have the Photoshop icon in my Dock, and for years have simply dragged whatever jpg onto the PHotoshop icon in the Dock to open it.. .but now I can't.
At the moment I am copy/pasting everything, which is time consuming and sooo annoying you have no idea.
I just wanted to move a AVI from my downloads to the desktop. I had to copy, paste, then delete from downloads... ***?!?!
Am I the only one experiencing this problem??
Please let me know.

How do I take mountain lion off my MacBook Pro

I recently updated my 2009 MacBook Pro to mountain lion and it has been a disaster. My computer gets very hot, up 170 degrees F and it freezes up and beacballs. I tried to reinstall snow leopard but it will not reinstall and freezes up during the install process. When I run a disk utility it says my hard drive is fine. Can you return your computer back to snow leopard?

Did you Wipe the drive of Mt Lion before you started the Snow Leopard install? If not that is what you have to do.

If you downloaded and installed it, and you made no backup, then you'll have to erase it and re-install another OS.
You can't uninstall an OS, it's not an App. It's an OS. It's not the same thing as an application, like Excel, that runs on an OS.
It's always prudent to make and keep a backup.

How do i take mountain lion off pause

I started my download and I had to leave my office and now I am where there is wire less. Is there something I need to do to start the download again.

App Store keeps Crashing when trying to purchase Mountain Lion.

Help! I've tried everything. I am using a Mac OS X 10.6.8. I am trying to buy Mountain Lion off the app store to update my OS so I can purchase Pages but everytime I open the app store and click buy the color wheel starts spinning and the app store won't respond.I have to force quit everytime. I tried to purchase some free apps to see if they would work and I'm getting the exact same problem. I've researched several solutions and have had no luck. I called apple and they said it could be because everyone was updating their iphone so try at non peak hours I did that and still no luck. I don't think thats the problem anyway. Any solutions?

You could also try enabling the debug menu for the App Store, using the terminal command below:
In there it gives you the option to delete cookies and reset the app... This might help you.
Nobody knows for sure what these options do, but it has never caused me any problems. However, be very careful not to click around too much, it may damage your machine.
Quit App Store.app
Open Terminal
Type "defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true" (without the quotations)
Hit ENTER
Relaunch App Store.app
Locate Menu and select the appropriate topic
Close & relaunch App Store.
Fingers crossed it will work for you.

Cannot even Buy Mountain Lion - why ?

I have to say Apple is driving me crazy here, Angry....
I have a suitable Laptop but right now it will not boot. I am trying t obuy Mountain Lion to install.
I have an Mac 20" which for some reason is not suitable, it is a Core 2 Duo but when I try and buy Mountain Lion it says it is not compatible.
So.... I can't even Buy a version to install on Laptop because I have to use my Mac and the iTunes site won't let me buy the **** thing via the Mac.
I know Apple ( apart from Steve Jobs ) is full of youngsters but raelly, are they that dumb as so create sush headaches for their clients ???
Ok I've vented... If someone could please help me by telling me how to buy a copy of Mountain Lion off the web, not via Post I woudl raelly appreciate it.

Issue with Mountain Lion Account

So heres my problem,
When Mountain Lion came out earlier this year I purchased it, but since I didnt have a credit card I just downloaded it off a friends account. Ever since I have downloaded it I have been having issues with mail accounts. It always comes up with his name and email adress when ever I add a new account (details are already saved when you add a new mail). I couldnt stand it any longer so I made my own Apple ID and redownloaded Mountain Lion off my account it since I have reccently got a credit card. Yet the still problem occurs even after re-installing mountain lion off my own account.
I have deleted all mailing accounts and added them again but still the same thing happens. Do not have a clue why this happens because the Mountain Lion I am running now was bought off my own account. It really annoys me and do not want some preset details popping up everytime I want to add something to my computer.

This is because while you've re-installed the system, you've preserved the user account.You need to do a "clean" install meaning a reformat and install. If the Mac orginally shipped with Lion or ML you can redownload via Recovery Partition but if the Mac shipped with Leopard 10.5.x or Snow Leopard 10.6.x then you need the OEM discs that shipped with it. You can call Apple and they will send you the discs for a nominal charge.

Mountain Lion Change dock to Dark?

I've been searching for this since 10.8 was released and yet to find any way to customize the dock background color.
I've always used a almost black dock BG in 10.6 and 10.7 and can't stand the light grey one in 10.8.
There must be "some" way to tweak these things?
It should be a few options in the system preference, either choose a light mid or dark bg, or even choose your own color.
OS X is a working environment which i use 8-14 hour/day and it's important to be able to adjust these things so you feel comfortable in your working space.
Please does anyone know how to tweak the Dock bg color?
Apple are you listening? give us some control over our own desktop.
Looking at Linux and Windows you can tweak anything to anything.
Also it would be nice to be able to turn off some of the social media integration.
I use Facebook and Twitter less and less and would appreciate those options to share everything turned off.
It's all about making my working space as clutterfree and pleasant.

There is no official way to do this. It's not as easy as replacing image files like it was pre-Mountain Lion. The dock is rendered using code, specifically the CoreGraphics API in the Dock.app binary. I wanted a black dock, and so I disassembled the binary and patched it to render the way that I liked. This would be the only way to change it.

Installing mountain lion failed

I have made a bootable USB disk of mountain lion and I tried to install mountain lion off of it. However, it has failed to install.
I went to boot it from the USB and it started installing as it should but then when it came to the second screen where it says it will take 30minutes it froze and then said that there was an error and I need to reinstall mountain lion. So I went to restart my computer and now it comes up with a error is saying "there was a problem installing "Mac OS X" try reinstalling". When I try reinstalling without my USB plugged in it comes up with the install OS x window but it does not detect my internal hard drive disk.
I do not no what to do? I tried to go utilities>restore system from backup and I plugged in my external hard drive but now it does not recognize my hard drive disk on my MacBook so I couldn't restore. Please help me! Need my MacBook to finish my assignments

Since you have Lion running after this restore, do not instal ML from this USB stick you made (it is probably not corrupt, but anyway don't use it) but download ML again.
The installer you will find then in the Applications Folder.
Before you install it, make a new USB stick installer with "Lion Diskmaker 2.0.1" : this works for Lion too. Read the acompanying readme.
When you have this USB stick made, INSTALL BY USING THE INSTALLER IN THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER:
this will eliminate the large file form your Aplications folder and will just create a ML installation with all your data etcetera in place.
Note: beware that some Apps may not be ML compatible, you can check on the www.roaringapps.com sites.

How do I select my Mac to start up on Mountain Lion rather than Windows?

I used Boot Camp to put Windows on my Mac. I got worried incase it would wipe Mountain Lion off my Mac so I cancelled it. I deleted the partition.
Now everytime I start my Mac up, it tries to open via Windows (which isn't installed).
How do I make it automatically boot up using Mountain Lion (10.8.2)?

To start into OS X, press X key while your Mac is starting. You can also press Option key and select Macintosh HD.
Then, to start always into OS X, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose Macintosh HD.
You don't have to worry about the Windows installation because if you don't do anything wrong, Windows and OS X will share space on the hard disk of your computer. If you want to install Windows with Boot Camp, print this file > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf
