I ended a task on Activity Monitor on my iMac and now my desktop and dock keep restarting?
So, I was on Activity Monitor trying to see how I could speed up my computer and I found this application which was using up a large percentage of my memory so I decided to end it. I can't remember what it was called but now every so often my desktop turns grey and the dock disappears then they both restart themselves. I'm pretty sure it's to do with me ending that task and not a virus. If it is a virus then tell me, if not then does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Sorry didn't mean to press this solved my question, yeah I've restarted it loads of times! It's been happening for a couple of months now it's really strange because it should just restart itself if it's that essential! But it's still not working-.-

In OSX Activity Monitor, what's the difference between 'free' memory and 'inactive' memory
In OS X Activity Monitor, what's the difference between 'free' memory and 'inactive' memory. My daughters 2Gb MacBook Pro is very slow, it probably needs more memory but there is almost 1Gb of 'inactive' memory but no 'free' memory when an application is opened.
ThanksFree RAM is the one that has not been used by any application since you started up your Mac, and inactive RAM is the one that was used by an application and it is not in use anymore.
1 GB of inactive RAM is a lot, and it may be the cause of the slowness. There are a lot of apps that allows you to turn inactive into free RAM. I use FreeMemory, but have a look at the Mac App Store.
If you are a developer, you can do that with a command you can type into Terminal:
sudo purge -
What is the installer task in Activity Monitor
My computer on boot up has 8GB of free HD space, its a Macbook Air 2011. Sometimes, not all the time, i get startup disk almost full, I look at the Disk utility and the 8GB has gone down to MB and eventually reaches zero. Fan is going crazy and it slows down.
I noticed a task called INSTALLER in Activity Monitor.
The only thing I ve done recently is install Firefox.
How can i find out what that Installer process is?I recommend your first priority is to get at least 15% free disk space. Probably everything will be nice after that.

So I am really unsure where to start but I def need a little help getting to where I want to be or feel I should be. I understand that I am pretty much filled when it comes to the RAM on this machine but I need to figure out how to lower it. I back up my machine about once a week which is longer than I would prefer but due to the way Mavericks has been acting I cant deal with the long backup process.... WHY?!?? may be your response to that and I will fill you in. My external Hard Drive is a 1tb Lacie and its about 2 years old. In that time I have dropped, lost, threw and slept ontop of it. Causeing minor damage (each time) to the casing. So now becomes rather hot and I kinda dont want it to burn out. When I first updated to Mavericks the backups were fast and went along mb by mb...now though, the updates drag out for 3-5 hours and update kb by kb. Tried some of the "solutions" posted on here but none seem to work any more than me consistantly purging my system while the backup happens...kinda why I dont have time to do it everyday like I'd like.
ANYWAY can someone please fill me in on a way, program, application, anything that will help me lower my RAM? Because in the spirit of honesty I just dont have the extra funds to snag some new RAM or another HD. I am almost at the point of saying "F**K IT" and wiping everything off the computer so its as close to empty as can be and manually, one by one redownloading what I want/need. But I dont have the time to accomplish that either. PLEASE lend me your ear and help a brudda out with some information from that exceptional brain of yours.
Below is a copy of my machines "report" from EtreCHECK and I am including screen shots of what the (Mavericks) Activity Monitor currently looks like in ALL PROCESSES. PLUS it kinda seems that I have WAY TOOO MANY processes going on in the ACTIVITY MONITOR and have NO clue how to lower the amount. Will truly appreciate any help anyone can toss my way.
THANK YOU

I've been trying to install the CS6 Design & Web Premium on my iMac (running Yosemite), but I keep getting the message that I have to quit "SafariNotificati" to install. I've tried the above methods as instructed on the Adobe site to no avail.
Hey, Adobe, your support sucks. I should be able to call some one about this.are you closing safari and finding anything in your activity monitor about a safari process?
if yes, are you able to terminate those processes? -

Activity Monitor reports incorrect amount of RAM
I have an early '09 Mac Mini 2.0 Ghz. I bought a 2GB stick from crucial and installed it in the empty slot without a hitch, I was nervous, but ifixit was a great help. If I look at the "About this Mac" screen, it clearly now says 3GB. If I then click look under the system profiler, all is well there also. 1-1GB + 1-2GB for a total of 3. If I open Activity Monitor, under the pie chart where it is supposed to say the total amount of RAM installed on the machine, it says 2.75GB. What gives? This one really has me stumped. Strange thing is that if I add up the "free:" and "used:" from the column on the left, it adds to 3GB.
I check my other Macs, all 4 display the correct amount in activity monitor. 3 of them running Snow Leopard and 1 G4 running Leopard. I called Apple support and the guy I talked to was unsure, but said that I should call Crucial. Called them, and the guy told me he was CERTAIN that the RAM was fine if it was up and running without crashing, which it is. He said it would either not startup, or it would be crashing regularly. I downloaded a RAM testing software, recommended by the crucial guy, called rember. Ran it, and all tests passed.
A few months ago, shortly before installing the RAM, I was given an old G3 iBook. I wanted to put some software on it for my daughter and hooked it up via Target Disk Mode to my Mini. Soon after it was connected, I smelled an electrical fire. The Mini then shut down and the fan spun at max for over an hour, with no response to the power button and the light off. Eventually I unplugged it, then later plugged back in and restarted. It seemed to be working fine. When I tried to hook up a firewire HD, it wouldn't read it. Under system profiler it said "Unable to read Firewire Device" in red (first time I had ever seen color in the profiler!) letters. I took it to the genius bar and the eventually told me the logic board was bad. Week later got it back with a new LB. About a month later Snow Leopard came out and I then added the RAM and installed it. It had previously been running Leopard.
I know that somewhere along the line, there was an update specifically for '09 Mini's that said something to the effect of... to correct an issue with certain Mac Mini's recognizing certain 3rd party RAM. It was a EFI update!?! maybe!?! or some type of ROM update, I think. I installed that update and got the "Successfully installed" dialog box after restart. I am not certain that the "bad" logic board (TDM firewire issue) had anything to do with the RAM, or even if the issue was present before the new logic board.
Would a replacement logic board be the cause? Maybe I had done the ROM update on the Mini's old logic board, but the new one needs to be updated? Does anyone else have these issues with a Mini or even another computer? Or is it a bug in activity monitor? You have to look at whether the specs state the GPU RAM is shared with main memory or not.
For example, for the latest Mac Minis, the spec states:
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 128MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
or
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
Compare to the high end iMac which simply states:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
All current Macs use integrated GPUs that use shared main memory RAM for graphics save for iMacs with an NVIDIA GT or ATI Radeon GPU, MacBook Pros with the NVIDIA 9600M GPU, and Mac Pros.
On shared machines Snow Leopard is just more honest by noting that memory used by the GPU is not actually available for use by the OS. -
Hide fields for activities when they are opened via Activity Monitor
Hi,
In CRM 5.0, my requirement was to hide a number of fields from activity display via transaction CRMD_ORDER & CIC0 (SAPGUI based transactions). I achieved it by using screen variant. I assigned my screen variant to different transactions (CRMD_ORDER, CIC0 etc.), and things were working fine.
But when I open activity monitoring report (transaction S_AE2_89000019), search for some activities and open an activity by double-clicking in the report, the hidden fields become visible. Although, the transaction being displayed in CRMD_ORDER.
I couldn't enable my transaction variant for transaction S_AE2_89000019, obviously because this is a report transaction which in turn opens activity when we double-click on the grid.
Any idea how to avoid these hidden fields being displayed via S_AE2_89000019?
Regards,
KaushalHey Kaushal,
Let me first inform you the following:
1) Transaction Variant are associatated to Dialog transactions only......Which means when u call report which eventually refers the same transaction even then the transaction variants is not called....
For the whole transaction variant to workout, you need CALL transaction " ..."....
2) The transaction S_AE2_89000019 is not a dialog transaction, its a parameter transaction which eventually calls a report AQZZ/SAPQUERY/SMCRM_REP_ACT1==
3)This report in turn uses the call to FM CRM_1O_CALL_FOREIGN which launches that crmd_order transaction screen and not crmd_order transaction..
You can enchance that report by creating a z report and inside that z report you can fulfill your requirement..
Inspire ppl by reqwarding..

Activity Monitor doesn't start up
Hello,
I have a problem with only one program Activity Monitor.
I won't start up. And i checked the console and I fixed all priveleges of this disk. And I still have the same problem.
Does anyone know what will work?
Thanks in advance...
'The tool is not setuid root' This I don't understand...
2006-05-15 15:16:40.525 Activity Monitor[728] The tool is not setuid root - please repair the privilegesOk I did some more research.... And I hope some of you can help me further..
I checked on other computers and they have a activitymonitor.plist... When I try to import it on this computer the file disappears... and i still have the message from the console that says please repair your priveleges... and they are good now...( I did reapair them and the priveleges are the same as all other programs.
If someone have a solution ... I will be the first to try
thanks COlin...
Isn't there a way with the terminal? Can't I start a program and say 'use this priveleges'?? -
Anyone else having this problem? Activity monitor will simply not run. It starts, then crashes...every time.
Me, too! Since upgrading to SL & then immediately to 10.6.2 a couple days ago.
Well, it won't run - it didn't crash, it just hung on startup. I tried repairing permissions and, after finding this thread, removed the plist file suggested, but no luck. I just realized I should check the log (Console), and found it was putting out this, over and over again:
12/13/09 11:28:47 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ActivityMonitor[4828]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/MacOS/activitymonitord", ...): No such file or directory
And exiting, then retrying every 10 seconds.
I opened the Activity Monitor package to confirm that activitymonitord is there, but upon rereading the message I realized it's telling me Activity Monitor needs to be in the utilities folder - and I had moved it into a subdirectory (to declutter my Utilities folder). It always worked there in previous systems, but apparently SL's Activity Monitor has a hard-coded address built in.
I moved AM back to where Apple wants it and it immediately opened. Don't know if this helps anyone else, but I thought I'd put this out there in case it does . . .
(Yes, I know you "should" leave programs where Apple puts them and keep your files in your user folder, but I just like to do things my way whenever I can get away with it.)

My activity monitor is showing the following two items, AddressBookSourceSync and CalendarAgent, using 75% to 85% of my resources. What are these and what are they doing? There is a third call Mingle that is also using a large amount of resources. Is all of this normal?
Kappy,
I found what you see in the attached screen shot. As you will se I do not have what you suggested. Also, so I understand more fully what did you back up and where did you save it? -
I was told that it was probably a problem with 10.4.5. Activity Monitor doesn't show any programs.
Now I've upgraded to leopard the same problem persists. I've deleted the plist files and this makes no difference. I can now, with leopard, look at the plist files and there isn't any obvious reason for this.
A ps -A in command mode works perfectly well, but no programs at all appear in Activity Monitor!
Any suggestions gratefully received...OK, it's to do with:
Permissions, the location of the Activity Monitor Application and the Install Receipt file ...
Open a Terminal window and enter
ls -l /Library/Receipts/Essentials.pkg/Contents/Archive.bom
ls -l "/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/Resources/pmTool"
If you get an error about "pmTool" it means you moved Activity Monitor from /Applications/Utilities
Move it back there and then run Disc Utility and Repair Permissions
If you can't repair it means it's lost the Receipt file somehow -
Activity monitor- "Installer" takes 5GB of memory. What is it and how to stop it?
In the activity monitor, there is a process name called "Installer" and it takes up to 5GB of my memory. Each time I force-quit it, it comes back on. What is it and how to stop it?
This is often due to a failed installation of genieo/installmac adware. You should be able to double-click the process in Activity Monitor to see the Inspect window, with a list of files used by it.
There are removal instructions at
You installed the "Genieo/InstallMac" rootkit.

No, the Disk Usage and Memory Usage pie charts are gone. Also gone is the Memory Usage Dock icon. (New graphs are much more useful, imo.)
