I feel like a complete idiot....  JDK for Linux question....

I downloaded the JDK for Linux... and I have a small problem...
It says "permission denied" when I attempt to access the file..
Now I imagine this might not have anything to do with Java... ((Opening the file as root does nothing either.. I get the same response))...
It just seems really odd that "root" would lack permission to do this, so I am wondering if there is something I am missing in this...
(PS- I can download and install the JDK for Win95 just fine :-) )
[email protected]

It would seam that you do not have the right permissions set on the executable but your question was to vauge witch file are you trying to access when you receive this message? what group are you in ?
I can probably help if you furnish me with more info.

  • [SOLVED] New Install of Gnome 3.2 doesn't feel like loading

    Greetings,
Before making this post, I have spent the majority of the day trying to solve this issue. I have switched from nvidia drivers to nouvela (sp?) drivers, incase that was the issue. I have scoured google, arch-wiki, and the forums until my eyes have bled. I have dug through the xsession-errors log to search out any missing components that might be causing this... but to no avail. If anything, trying to run and try Gnome 3.2 has made me feel like a complete idiot, who has obviously learnt nothing after years of using linux. So, I come here hoping that some one can point me to the solution my brain cannot itself come up with.
    Here the situation:
I have been running KDE4 for quite some time happily. I have ran Gnome 3 back in its beginning days succesfully as well, but that was an older, now dead, pc. Having seen some neat little things about the new Gnome 3.2, I got an itch to give it a try. So, I go and follow the Gnome article on the excellent arch wiki- installing both gnome and gnome extras, letting it grab everything, change from kdm to gdm, and reboot.
Well, it gives me the old gdm I remember from the early gnome 3 days (wasn't this changed) despite it showing that it is GDM 3.2 via pacman. It shows my user name, lets me put my password, and shows the stripped background. One thing to note is that the cursor remains a clock face, never changing to a pointer.
I log in, choosing GNOME, all that remains is the wallpaper, with the clockface cursor, no pointer. I go take the kids to the bus stop, come back apx. 20 min. later, no change.
Ok, bug crushing time right? So I go through the steps. I make sure that gnome shell is indeed installed. I remove any config files (there weren't any), remove gnome shell, reinstall. No go. I rinse and repeat, but removing & reinstalling different things, such as GDM, and even gnome completely. No go.
Hopping into pekwm, I search. I make copies of the xsession-errors each time, and load them in pekwm after a reboot, looking through with pacman by myside to make sure I have any possible missing files. And finally after failure after failure I give up, and come here.
So, here's my xsession-errors log. Please, if anyone can help, or even offer any kind of suggestion that might spark something in my brain to get me going in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. If this thread needs moved, merged, etc, please do so... I've searched the forums, but now my brain is numb, so yeah...

Ok, I guess all it took was for me to post this to wake up and be able to solve the issue.
It is simple really. I just needed to re-install libltdl.
So, for those searching, if you get this similar problem,
    pacman -S libltdl
is what solved it for me.

  • Preloader problem - feel like an idiot

I feel like a total idiot. I can't seem to get my
preloader to work. Here's my code. What am I doing wrong? The
problem is that myApp.swf loads successfully but the .onEnterFrame
function thinks that loader_mc is 1 frame and 0 bytes long.

Again, I much appreciate your help. I had put some trace
statements in trying to find out what getBytesLoaded/Total were and
they were coming back with values I didn't understand, so I kept
thinking it was trying to get the values of the empty_mc I had
instantiated instead of the thing I was trying to load and I kept
scratching my head as to why and tried a lot of different things
and was baffled. At any rate, in the end I think it's a timing
issue if I understand correctly. In other words, I think the
function started executing before it could really grab the correct
information about the .swf that I was trying to load. Is that
    right?
Oh well, I'm out of the ditch with that silly problem now and
moving on to my next set of challenges. :-)
Again, thank you so VERY much for being a willing helping
hand to us newbies out here.

  • JDK 1.4.2 for Linux Redhat 5 on x86_64 (amd64) ?

    Hi,
i need to install a Netweaver 2004s on a Redhat 5 x86_64 system. But I can't find a source for downloading the correct JDK or SDK version.
OSS 941595 provides a link to java.sun.com with a special package for SAP-software, but it provides only solaris and windows packages. On java.sun.com it looks like there is no package for linux x86_64 previous java 1.5.x.
I found a SAP-presentation, on it they refer to an IBM-rpm java package which should work. But were to download it? On ibm.com I could not find it...
    Thanks for any hints!
    Roland

    hi,
    thanks for your answer!
    But there they provide:
    - j2sdk-1_4_2_12-linux-i586.bin --> this is 32bit
    - j2sdk-1_4_2_12-linux-ia64.bin --> this is IA64 (also called "Itanium"), which is NOT the same as x86_64 (also called Amd64 or Intel64)
    - and some solaris-packages, which I also can not use
The problem is to find a package for Linux x86_64. I need this platform to be able to use more than 4gb memory...

  • No lift off...can't find the plane!...Feel like I'...

Well I am back, having been the author of
Feel like I'm stuck at the airport...
     I'm still in trouble!
Ordered 14 Feb Engineer visit today 8 til 1.
A contractor from Openreach arrived at my home at 12:45. I joked just made the slot then!
He said he'd been here (phone cab not FTTC) since first thing but couldn't find our line, stuck a meter on it went back to the cab but returned saying he still couldnt find it. Nothing he can do, will report it to BT who will make another appt.
I am feeling mixed emotions...angry/nothing I wasnt expecting/depressed/whatever... I dont think I can be bothered to phone BT and put myself through the grinder!
My line is with BT and my ADSL with O2 which will probably disappear at midnight.
Not really expecting a response I hust feel like a rant!
    Thanks for listening.
    Cheers
    Alan

    Thanks Ryan & Sholtie.
I was about to reply that they were at the right cabinet, then I thought all the contractor did was answer "yes" to my question "Were you at the right cabinet, No 26?"
I am normally a very trusting person but there was something about this guy's demeanour and negative attitude which made me feel that he had been doing something else all morning and just turned up before the deadline. He said he had been given the wrong routing info. I am sure if he had called in the same info after an hour rather than after 5 (which Openreach called to say they had fixed within a couple of hours) then it could have been resolved in the allotted time.
There are a lot of complaints on the forum and yes the majority of successes go unreported. I accept that things can go wrong its how they are responded to that is important. In this case I did nothing and have to admit to being satisfied to their reaction. Fortunately I am at home most of the time so it was not a major inconvenience more a disappointment.
I am looking forward to a positive outcome.
    Cheers

  • Jdk for FreeBSD

I have a FreeBSD 6.2 system setup. I want to install jdk1.5 on that system. Which jdk should I install? Can anyone give me the url to that location. I thought we need to install the jdk for solaris. Then read somewhere that FreeBSD is a non-Solaris OS.
Can anyone please tell me which jdk should I install on FreeBSD?
    I need this information asap.

I used to have a FreeBSD box and I installed the jdk via the ports system. You can either use the native jdk or the Sun jdk for Linux which will run under FreeBSD using the Linux compatibility.
    Native will be something like:
cd /usr/ports/java/jdkxx (where xx is the version)
    make install clean
    Linux will be something like:
    cd /usr/ports/java/linux-sun-xx
    make install clean

No, the 3D graph in LabVIEW is an Active X control and therefore a
Widnows only feature. If the graphics are not to complicated you may try
to look into drawing your own 3D graphs into a picture control which
would work on any LabVIEW platform. Other than that you would have to
rely on external packages to do 3D graphics under Linux.

There are alternatives. But none of them have Google street view, able to work on iOS 6. Apple should have offered this as a beta version, for a few more months instead of inflicting us with an inferior product. This iPad will probably be my last Apple product. A shame, because until last a few days ago, I thought the iPad and iPhone were fantastic.
Apple should quit their petty squabbling with, Google and Samsung and concentrate on supplying the best product.
Google and Samsung must be enjoying this particular fiasco.

Apple will repair or replace at its discretions, parts found to be defective in materials or workmanship.
You will have to discuss whether your history warrants a complete replacement with the folks at the Genius Bar.
I do not speak for Apple, but it sounds to me like you have been unlucky, but not unlucky enough (or have spent so much time with your MacBook in the shop) to warrant a complete replacement.
You have not provided any details of what the faults were or what was replaced. If they replaced the motherboard, you already got a new computer -- because everything except the drive and the display is on that board.

  • Anyone else feel like an idiot?

    Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone shares how I feel. I bought a G5 Imac 2.1 Ghz a little over a month ago, I am doing some video editing etc.....
Now with this new one out so soon, I feel like an idiot buying the other one (20' inch at $1700).... I could really use the extra speed (if it's true that it's twice as fast.)
I wish they would have offered some type of an upgrade offer for people who bought their Imacs just recently..
    Anyone understand me?!!

YES!!! add me to the list!!! i'm ******, and feel like an idiot!!!
    aargh!!
I was planing to wait until the intel macs came out to buy a new computer (My first Mac btw).... but when the G5 iMacs with iSight came out, i couldn't resist... and convinced myself that i would be waiting a long while till the intel macs were released... so i got one...
    now i'm ******...
sure, the new ones might have a few problems, but i can handle that, i would rather that, than this G5 that is going to age FAR quicker than the new Intel ones... and my iMac is only ONE MONTH old... and it is out of date already!!
y did they release the iMac G5s with iSight at all???.. they shouldn't have.. just released the iMac Intel with iSight... GRR!!
OR they should have told us this.. frankly it is RUDE!!.. and i feel ripped off!
I even bought the 3-year extended warranty... is there anyway i can trade, or pay a little bit more and get an intel one??
is it possible to return this one?? (considering it is only 1 month old??).. then i will buy an intel one .. so apple won't really loose their money...
I am a student.. just finishing off my university studies in graphic design (college i think you call it in the states).. so i wanted a computer that would last a good while, and handle the applications etc that i need... this was a big purchase for me too, considering im a student.. infact the MOST expensive thing i own... so u can understand my frustration..
    grr!!.. i feel so stupid!...
Next time, i am going to be EXTREMELY cautious buying anything from Apple... if they are lucky enough that i would consider EVER buying anything from them again!! grr!
Apple, I never expected you would be this rude, especially to a new customer... who you could have earned for life.. (i did love apple, and my ipod.. but this rudeness and inconsiderate behaviour has just changed my mind).. you are the same as all the other companies... forget my loyalty, BYE!
(PS. I am aware apple probably won't read this.. but i just had to vent my frustration..)

how can someone use a stolen iphone? does erasing the phone (which I feel like I should do) make it easier for the thief to use the iphone?  If I don't erase it, it doesn't seem like anyone should be able to use the phone because of my password. Also, is it possible to retrieve anything that has been sent to the phone (i.e. text messages) since it was stolen through icloud? The "find my iphone" app says the device is offline but it rings when I call my number -- any idea how that would be the case? Thanks!!

You have a password, so good move on your part.  Whether you erase it or the thief does, they still get to use the iPhone as theirs.  Which is more important (pick one), protecting your data or punishing the thief?
Ringing occurs at the carrier.  Chances are you're going to voicemail after only two or three rings.  If you have an iCloud backup also a good move.  Re-read my question in the first paragraph.
