I feel like my imac has a virus?

It seems like there is something wrong with my imac, i feel like a virus maybe.  This is what has been happening; I can be on my apple.com screen when I first sign on and then I will go directly to my top site where I have all of my personal sites like bank, etrade, etc. and when I do that, the screen gets all distorted for a split second.  What would you all suggest I do?  I was thinking of taking my imac to best buy and have someone check it out.  Is there some app or program that I can download via the apple store that will actually check my computer for any type of problems.

Run Apple Hardware Test.
If it reports "no trouble found" then consider the following:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
...  I was thinking of taking my imac to best buy and have someone check it out.
You would be better off taking it your local automobile repair shop and having them check it out.
An Apple Store or authorized Apple Service Provider are the only properly qualified technicians to consider using.

what should I do if my imac has a virus and my email has been hacked

when you say your email has been hacked... Do you mean that people are telling you that they are getting emails from you that you never sent?
It is possible that it is a virus, but also it could have been due to a phishing scam.
Another possibility could be that someone is using a script or program that uses your email as an Alias (Mask) to cover up who the email is really being sent from.
As far as what to do if you think you have a virus, just make sure your software is up to date by clicking the () in the upper left and then click 'Software Update'.
You can get virus scanner software, and antivirus programs as well as Rudegar said as well.
Is anything else behaving abnormally other than your email?

  • How can i tell if my iMac has a virus

My 8 year old son was told he could watch a film for free i he visited a site called put locker. when he did this, safari opened lots of pop ups to say Contact Apple Support malicious activity.  How do i check if my iMac now has a virus?

It's not a virus, and there is no reason to download anything. It's a Web scam that only affects your browser, and only temporarily. There are several ways to recover.
    1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press the key combination command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.
    2. Press and hold command-W. You may hear repeating alert sounds. While holding the keys, click the OK button in the popup. A different popup may appear, which you can cancel out of as usual.
    3. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.
Close the malicious window or tab.
Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.
    4. If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. None of the windows and tabs will reopen.
After closing the malicious page, from the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • How do you find out if your imac has a virus?

I was browsing internet and all of a sudden a warning sign came up about my computer having virus, malware content and is saying do I want to check for problems? is this a virus? how do I know? another issue is sometimes I hear sound kinda like when you are playing a scratch cd. what is this prob?

I'm not familiar with Avast, so I don't know what "errors" it's finding. I suspect, like most AV companies, they want to impress you by finding a lot of things which are of absolutely no consequence
If it found three viruses, they are all for Windows and won't run on your Mac. There are no Mac viruses, period.
Here is something to read on Mac malware.

Stop running AV. You don't need it. Many AV programs are in fact more harmful than what they purport to protect against. If you want to run anything, use

Backing up your data is an entirely different issue. Get an external hard drive and make an external bootable clone, my personal preference over Time Machine. But you could use Time Machine.
    This is what I use.

  • Feel like my Imac mountain lion is infected with key logger or somethings up? what do I do?

Help me figure out if I have been compromised. I opened and installed software that maybe I should not have from web developer that is trying to sell me services and since then I noticed weird  things...

From what you describe it sounds like a phishing attempt. There are plenty of people out there with too much time on their hands, and almost as many all too eager to divulge personal information to anyone who asks. It's not difficult to determine someone's birthday given just a few pieces of information.
Invitations for a Skype chat with a total stranger should be accepted as much as any conversation with a total stranger. The next thing a scammer will talk you into is downloading a file he sends you over Skype, then convincing you to install it on your Mac. If you did that, then anything is possible. The app you thought was GoToMeeting probably wasn't, which means you should remove it ASAP. As far as I know GoToMeeting is not free.

Right, and I'm Steve Jobs. What does an international offshore provider provide? International shores? Using pickup lines like that usually got me a slap in the face.

It sounds like a runaway process is filling up your volume.
Boot in safe mode. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Use a tool such as the one linked below to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space:

  • My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time?

My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time - then I have to repeat this again! Any help appreciated.

I've been having the same issue, but have just discovered something on my own that hasn't been pointed out in any of the forums I've visited.  In what I thought would be a vain attempt to help myself, I went to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and then clicked on Login Items.  I discovered that one of the Items that was listed to open automatically upon login was iTunes Helper and that there was an exclamation point beside it indicating that it was incompatible.  I simply deleted that item and now I don't have the situation you described and my wireless is connected.  Hope this helps!

  • 5 days ago I bought a 13" mac book air from an apple store.  It does NOT have Maverick on it!  I paid full price for it but since it has the old operating system-.I kind of feel like I purchased a "clearance" item but payed full price!  any advice?

5 days ago I bought a 13" MacBook Air from an apple store.  It does not have Maverick on it!  I paid full price for it, but since it has the old operating system I kind of feel like I bought a "clearance" item but payed full price for it!  Does anyone have any advice, wisdom etc.  This is my first Mac and I'm really bummed that it's not the latest and greatest.  I know I can download maverick for free.....but are there other differences?  Maybe something else that I thought I was getting but didn't?  Thanks.

There is no difference, you didnt get "shorted" Mavericks is a FREE DOWNLOAD
Open the APP store and download Mavericks.
You didnt buy a "clearance" item, you just got an Air that was there at the shop before Mavericks was released.
There is no difference other than a 40 min. download.

  • Hi, i would like to know if my mac has a virus

hi, i would like to know if my mac has a virus, ´cause in sometimes it works weird

Ralph is right (of course) about no virus.
What you are describing seems to be what might happen if all of the system's resources* are gobbled up.
*When I say "resources" - I mean memory (real and virtual), caching needs, CPU usage etc.
The web pages you describe have nothing to do with your Mac having been "infected", per se, but that kind of "Pop Over" "Pop Under" malicious JavaScript can certainly gpbble up resources. When you get the Web being mean to you, and have a lot of other APPs open too, you could max out your machine, especially if it is older like mine.
To help other members answer your question, give as many details as you can.
Include your Mac Model name and specs such as processor speed, memory, and storage capacity. Please do not include your Serial Number, IMEI, MEID, or other personal information.
Provide the version numbers of your operating system and relevant applications, for example "OS 10.4.11" , "Quicktime Player 7.6.4",  "Safari 4.1.3"and any other apps you might have open when the misbehavior occurs.
Describe the problem in detail, and include step-by-step your actions that lead up to °each misbehavior. You seem to be describing at least TWO different bad behaviors
List any troubleshooting steps you've already tried, or temporary fixes you've discovered.
