When i first got my dsl and my router it was the fastest thing ive seen and i downloaded in seconds and i could play online games flawlessly, well now my internet slowed down and its not me being used to the fast speed. It takes me minutes to download a song and im experiencing serious lag play games, does anybody know the cause of this and wat do i do about it?

Compare the speed you will get when you connect the computer directly to the modem. If that is faster it is a router problem else it is simply a crowded internet connection and a problem with your ISP.

Internet speed is a difficult thing. Checking the actual speed is difficult, in particular because the IP protocol is "best-effort" which means you have no guarantee of delivery and the speed also depends on how much traffic there is on the route to the destination. If a router on the route runs on 100% it will drop everything which it cannot handle which will slow the whole thing down, obviously. So at busy times it gets slower. Also the distance of the connections slows traffic down, e.g. trans-continental lines are slower. Basically you can just see how fast it is at the moment.
What you can measure to some extent is the speed of your connection to your ISP. The only real way to check this speed is using a speed test. Google for internet speed test and bandwidth speed test and you'll find some sites which offer a test run. The problem: for accurate measurements the site should be very close to you, ideally placed on your ISP's server. Only then you will be able to measure how fast you'll get the data through the internet connection. If it is further away many other factors on the route can influence the result or reduct the overall throughput.
If you ISP does not have a internet line speed test on its website, then ask them to add one. :-) Until then, try speed tests from servers of them. If they have a download server where you can download larger files (e.g. some documentation or larger free software packages, should be some 10MB at least), try to do that. If you have a webspace with them you could also try to upload larger files there and download them again. This should give you a good picture how fast the internet line to the ISP. Always remember to do the tests a couple of time to get an average.
To see, how far away a site is, do a tracert: open a command prompt window and run the tracert command. To check the distance of www.linksys.com enter "tracert www.linksys.com". The less hops you have the close it is and the better the results for the tests.
Also, to check how far the router slows the line down: connect the computer directly to the modem and do the tests again.

My mid 2011 MacBook Air has slowed down significantly overnight?

Last night my MacBook Air was working fine.
When I went to use it this morning, it has slowed down significantly. It takes awhile for it to respond to trackpad movement or the keyboard. Opening finder is delayed now, opening any app is delayed now. Booting it back up takes extra long now, probably around a minute compared to thirty seconds before.
I've tried an SMC reset, repairing the disk and repairing disk permissions.
From what I can see, the hardware doesn't appear to be failing, but I could be wrong.
Can anyone help me out? What could possibly be going on with my MacBook? How did this happen overnight?

Your MacBook Air's memory is not upgradable, and as you already determined unused storage capacity is not a relevant factor.
There are many reasons a Mac may be performing slower than expected.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:

Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Internet slows down at night to less than 1Mbs, poor customer service

I'm having the same problem. I had originally 1-3 Mbps (Oct 2008 - Jan 2012). It used to work fine but then the speed seems to be slowing down as years passed by, I was getting less than 1Mbps most of the time so I upgraded to 3-7Mbps with 2 years holding period (Jan 2012 to Jan 2014). From Jan 2012 to Nov. 2012 it was fine, then starting Dec. 2012, the internet started to slow down at night. I'm getting 6-7Mbps during daytime and until around 9pm, then the internet slows down to less than 1Mbps after 9pm. Then starting mid January 2013, the situation seems to get worst, the internet slows down starting around 7pm, and then on the 3rd wk of January, the internet started to slow down as early as 5pm.
I've contacted the customer service twice. First, the person who attended remotely accessed my computer and after more than 15 minutes trying to find fault at my computer, wiring, set-up or wireless router (instead of the verizon network), he realized he doesn't have any excuses and instead instructed me to hard reset the modem. I told him that if I hard reset the modem, he will be disconnected to my computer. He said, "that's fine, I will call you you to give instruction on how to set-up the modem". After I have hard reset the modem, he never called up and I was left all by myself figuring out how to set-up the modem. I've contacted the customer service the 2nd time, a different person attended and exactly the same thing happened, the guy instructed me to hard reset the modem but never called up after he got disconnected. I guess this is their expertise, how to rudely leave the communication once they figure out that they can't resolve the problem.
Once the 2 years holding period is over, I will change to other internet provider and will never switch back to verizon again. I will never ever recommend verizon to my friends and will share them my experience with verizon.

This is one of the reasons we are leaving Verizon as well. We previously left Brighthouse because the initial deal sounded great, until the rebates expired. When the price jacked up, I told them they had to better because Brighthouse was much less expensive for the same package but their service didn't slow down at 7pm. The customer service agent said I really couldn't compare the two because Verizon has a superior quality of service. I asked, "Then why does my internet slow down around 7pm, because the Brighthouse service didn't do that". All the customer service agent has to say was, "That's not true." Nice try. He essentially called me a liar, about something I've seen firsthand, and I have experienced that same 7pm slowdown with a similar service we had in NC. Sorry Verizon, we left Brighthouse because we thought we were saving a few bucks, and getting a higher speed on our internet. Not true on both accounts and we're going back. PS To the person who made this initial blog post, I noticed there were 484 views but no "likes" - it's because that button won't let you click it, at least that's what I experienced on my end. I'm certain there are a lot more people out there who deal with this same issue and are quite frustrated.

Again, it depends on file types. Sometimes Apple files are not single files but packages of many smaller files, for example the iPhoto Library. Right-click in Finder, if there's "Show Package Contents", then it is technically not a single file.
For simple file transfer from one machine to another per USB drive, it can save some time to zip the data before and after transfer to and from the USB drive.

Thanks for your response. I am not an experienced user of FC or other video editing software but if its that hit and miss I think I will go to the trouble of finding some better software - I have a busy enough life as is, I don;t want to get into second guessing what a software problem might be!
I have just successfully exported my video to a master file using one of the Apple codec options so it looks like it could be to do with the H.264 codec. I am wondering if Apples Compressor software would solve this problem - the only way to try this it to buy it, there is not trial for the compressor app. Any ideas?

I don't think you're missing anything. You should be able to park your playhead on a clip and rescale.
Wondering if you might have a stuck render. Select the clip and do something to it like a small change after hitting transform. Then see if it will rescale. If not, try Control+R to re-render the clip.
BTW, are the Go Pro clips optimized? If not they probably should be.

Internet slows down or shuts off for a few minutes, then goes back to normal. What should I do?

So I've been away for a while and when I got back to US I've had some issues.
It's the same internet connection as before, so I'm not sure if that's the problem.
When I use an internet browser everything goes well for a while and then internet suddenly slows down or shuts off , it dosen't show dissconnect or anything.
The only thing that happens is that pages won't load, or they load super slow. This usually happens for a few minutes.
I got my macbook this september and I'm careful with not blocking the fans.
The same thing happens when I play games online, the internet "shuts" off or slows down, freezing the game. I'm now unable to play that game because of this issue.
I really don't know what could've causes this and I'm not really sure how to check, I would appreciate any help.
When this issue happens it dosen't seem to be because of what I have open, how mane pages, or over heating.
(I'm not a hundred percent sure about the heat, it gets warm but hot acctualy heated up as in when it's running heavy applications)
I'd like a response fast because this affects not only my gaming (which I really miss) but also everything else like HW, since the page would die suddenly.

p.s It's a wifi connection and I don't have acess to use a cable. I'm trying to get a hold of the password to the internet since I only have it locked on my laptop as "go-to" connections.. My landlord has the password ..

I have a 15" Macbook Pro With Retina Display, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Pro 1024 MB, OS X 10.9.2 (13C64). late 2013
for some reason since the last system upadate, my internet on my Macbook has been slowing down at random times during operation, sometimes I am using facetime and browsing Safari, facetime continues operating normally but everything else relted to the interent would show me that there is no internet connection "Basically i cannot use anything related to the internet unless i turn off and on the wirless adapter. and its not just while using Facetime and safari but Safari alone aswell "one second am using the internet no problem playing video on youtube and checking facebook and all the sudddent it stops loading and tells me that there is no internet connected though the wireless indicator shows otherwise.
I have really fast internet and am the only one using it, i have comcast Blast Plus "57 MB/S download speeds".
could u please help me get the bottom of this random occuring issue ?

Upgrade to Leopard causing internet slow down?

I just upgraded my G5 PowerMac from Tiger to Leopard. The Mac is plugged via ethernet directly into a NetGear router so I can also access internet wirelessly from my MacBookPro. Since the OS upgrade on my tower, I've noticed marked slow down in internet connectivity: web pages load really slowly and Mail takes forever to pull in my mail. Could Leopard be the culprit? Have run a speed test and results show that I'm getting what I'm paying for in terms of up/download speed, but wait times are ridiculous! Help!

If you look really carefully, you see me alternately scratching my head and hitting it against the wall . I'm almost clueless. I'm going to assume that your Internet access is via WiFi, right? If so, the only thing I can come up with is that when you mirror the display there's some kind of electrical interference that gets thrown up. (And I'll cheerfully admit that I could easily be totally wrong!) If I'm correct though, it is possible that switching your WiFi channel, selecting Internet robustness in the WiFi settings, or moving your notebook as far away from the display as possible might work.

Internet slow down after installing airport extreme.

I would like to know if there is a reason this slow down occurred. I have tried a locked setting and now have an unlocked setting. Unlocked because that was the only way I could get nintendo ds to work online. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

InDesign CC slows down significantly upon placing a Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 file

I'm running the latest Mavericks OS on a brand new iMac 27" 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 computer with 32 GB RAM. The slowdown occurs even if ID is the only app running.
The Word files consist mainly of text which are typically book maunscripts. It doesn't seem to matter whether the files are large or small. They all cause ID to slow down. We want to import the Word files so as to preserve mainly any italics.
Once the ID document contains a placed MS Word file, the slows are apparent mainly in:
Selecting a text box: 20-30 sec lag waiting for the beachball until it selects
Clicking to place the insertion mark: an additional 20-30 sec
Placing an image file: 20-30 sec for the import dialog to appear, 20-30 sec after the open button is clicked for the selected image to appear on the page
We've tried uninstalling ID CC via the script in the app folder.
We've also completely uninstalled MS Word follow MS's instructions, and reinstalling Word.
We've cleaned up our fonts with Extensis' Font Doctor.
We've deleted fonts we don't use.
One of the main reasons for buying the new iMac was to hopefully benefit from the enhanced processing power, additional RAM, and clean installs of the software.
What else can we try?
Page layout for books using ID CC with Word is the bulk of our work and we need to resolve this matter ASAP.

well this seems the new features of the Mac OS X 10.4.8.
Unbelievable, i've got blue tint all around my screen, the airport seems to have slow down, and i've got the processors running at most of the time at 2.0GHz.
I don't mind to have the processor at 2.0, but the blue tint and the airport, it's really annoying. Is there any way out to this mess????? Please!!!
