I Fixed My Nano and Now It's Seen By Windows and iTunes

I was having the same symptoms as most everybody else.
I did the driver download and problem solved.
The procedure has already been posted and linked to as a solution by other people.
Here is what I did. Hope it helps.
1.Open the "i386"folder. Goto your local drive.....Windows.....Driver Cache....i386.
2.Download drivers from driverguide.com...usbstor.inf....usbstor.sys
You must registar with the site. It's FREE but you have to flip through
alot of ads.Copy and paste the links below.
usbstor.sys--http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=86765
usbstor.inf--http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=359265
The usbstor.inf driver is zipped so you will need winzip
3.Copy both of the files into the "i386" folder and close the folder.
4.Plug in your iPod.
You should get the "add new hardware wizard". If you don't go to your control panel
add click on the add hardware. Start the wizard process,when you come to the option
to find the software this is where you will look for the drivers.Click browse and go to
local drive....windows.....driver cache.....i386. and select ok.
I'm not a pro and I got it to work.Good luck.

Can you see the iPod in the device manager?
Start--My Computer--Right Click--Manage--In The Left Pane Click Device Manager--If Your Computer Sees The iPod There Will Be A Yellow Question Mark Next to iPod.
If you don't have this then the driver solution will not work.
It could be as simple as you downloaded the wrong drivers. Try it again. I can email the drivers to you.

Thanks for the link. It is a wealth of good info. I still haven't been able to determine what caused my crash, but with the link you provided I should be able to track it down. Hopefully it was just a one time thing. After using the power button and rebooting all seems ok now. Thanks again.

Here is a recent post I assembled for a similar question:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Workarounds:
1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
3. Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open, modify and save your data files;
3. Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

Open iTunes and connect your iPod. Select your iPod in iTunes from the Source list. (I'm assuming this still works, although you didn't indicate if it did or didn't.) Make sure the box is checked to Open iTunes when this device is connected. You should be all set!

Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:

You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

This sounds like a known issue reported here:

There was a workaround posted, but I've not tested it myself. Here are the steps.
# Go into Yahoo Messenger Options - Change the Window in the dropdown to Tab and press OK.
# Then go back and switch it to small window and press OK.
Once the bug is officially resolved, you could try running a Nightly or Aurora build to use the fix early.
