I forget my rescue and recovery workspace logon in password...

Hi, anyone can help me with this??? I am using Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop. But i got a problem.
I wanted to reboot my laptop but when i was using my rescue and recovery, it suddenly prompt up a box, requested me to key in my window password. I tried all my password but the system deny it and it pop up a box, saying i never register with Client Security solutions and i need to key in the password to retrieve password or passphrase.
Please teach me what to do. Last time i reboot my computer, it was normal with no box prompt up requesting me for password and not sure starting from when my Client Security Solution don accept my window login password anymore.
What should i do when i forget my rescue and recovery workspace password?? Please help. Thanks

my computer accused me of removing a file that i was unfamiliar with, and refused to start. i pushed the thinkvantage button, bringing me to rescue and recovery 3. when i try to log on it tells me i "do not have a password configured." nothing on the screen seems to lead to configuring this password. i'm not sure how to do it since i can't really access anything on the computer until i enter this password. i'm not very good with computers, obviously, so if anyone could put how to do this in layman's terms, i would much appreciate it.

  • Lost/unknown Rescue and Recovery Workshop logon

I had to restore my computer last night to the first back up and used the Rescue and Recovery program. I followed the directions and it preformed the restore. Now, I start up my computer and after hitting the think vantage button, it takes me to Rescue and Recovery Workspace Logon. I do not have the password (don't know if I every did) and can not click the forgot password button.
I bought the computer 3 years ago and had a aquaintence set up the computer. What do I do?

I am having the same problem. I am also getting very frustrated by Lenovo Tech Support & Fulfillment. My computer is a Thinkpad X41 tablet (this is a personal machine not one of the hundreds I have purchased for my employer). My machine is out of support/warranty. When tech support wouldn't talk to me until I talked to Fulfillment. Fulfillment told me that if I accepted for cost support then I would receive technical assistance over the phone and would only have to pay if I sent my machine in for repair ($250-$550).
Based on the information in this posting, it appears that a Lenovo Rescue & Recovery patch has scrambled the R&R password with no way to recover. To me this is Lenovo breaking my computer for me.
If my Chevy dealer broke my car for me (when I took it to them for regularly schedued maintenance - i.e. System Update), then I would be very unhappy if they returned my car to me broken.
This posting indicates that the only way to get this fixed is to get recovery CDs. Lenovo wants to charge $45.99 for these. I think this is a case where they should be provided for free.
Unfortunately, tech support is telling me they won't even confirm the R&R patch problem by looking it up in the knowledge base. (My thinking being if they can confirm that Lenovo broke my computer, then they should agree to provide the R&R CDs for free.)
After two tech support people refused to read the knowledge base and discuss this problem, I asked for escalation.
Most surprising of all, the second tech stated that managers are not available for escalation for out of warranty computers. In fact, he claimed that this was a written policy (he claimed to have a piece of paper in front of him).
So, what do you do when Lenovo breaks your computer for you and won't agree to help fix it?
    Thanks,
    Albert

  • Unable to access the Rescue and Recovery workspace upon reboot

    Hello forum.
I have a problem with getting access to the Rescue and Recovery area when I reboot.
Even though I have tried to hit both Enter, F11 and Lenovo Care bottom, I still do not get access to the Rescue and Recovery area. Instead the system just boot as normal, and Vista starts up. However hitting the F1 I get access to the BIOS, so can anyone help me with a solution on how to get access to the Rescue and Recovery area??

    Welcome to the forum!
Installing Ubuntu (or any other Linux distro for that fact) will render the recovery partition useless 99 out of 100 times if one doesn't specify differently when they're installing Linux...
Wiping an entire drive and doing a fresh install from recovery disks seems to be the only way out that I can think of.
    Good luck.

  • Rescue and Recovery Password not Accepted

There is a previous message with the same title but, it is marked solved.  The solution does not work for my machine.
    My ThinkPad T2300 (0768 -2UU) has crashed.
When I press F11, the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 3 screen appears.
    - I assume it is Version 3.
The Rescue and Recovery Workspace Logon window then appears.  It has  the following fields.
    - User Name: AutoFilled with my main ID (Jim).
    - Windows Password: blank
    - DOMAIN: Autofilled with Lenovo-xxxxxxxx
    - Check box: "I forgot my Windows Password"  It is grayed out!
When I put in my Windows Password, I get the following message.  "Authentication failed.  Please try again."
If I change to another id: Administrator, John etc. I get the following message. "The user has not been enrolled with the Client Security Solution.  Only enrolled users may log on or recover their password/passphrase."
When I boot the machine, the best I can do is to get into DOS.   I have no passwords set in Bios.  I have tried to remove the password with the following command  (C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove) .   I have scanned my machine and cannot find "app.exe".
How can I fix this problem?

    Hi,
based on the informations, that you provided, this looks, like if the RnR partition was configured as secure for your CSS application.
So here are the steps, on how to get rid of the password request:
    - start into OS
    - open CSS
    - go to Advanced-> Manager security policies
    - in this new window you will see on the left side the option "Log on to Rescue and Recovery". Please select it and on the right site you can choose the correct option, that you want to user. Or just dissable it.
Your situation is, that you, or someone have protected the RnR partition with the CSS security policy. The command, that you noticed, that is not for this purpose, because there are multiple ways on how to set a password into RnR partition:
    1) useind RnR => this is the option, where the command "pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove" would help
    2) using BIOS => this was only by older systems
    3) using CSS => this is the situaiton, that you see. The main hint is the domain field, which can be only comming from CSS
Let me know, if this helps.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 and X31 HPA Restore Your Backups

    Good morning!
Installed a new hard drive on my X31. I used a purchased set of official restore media to do a clean install of Windows XP with the HPA Predesktop Area in place.
Two weeks later all of my Windows and ThinkPad updates are complete and I am ready for a clean backup.
I installed Rescue and Recovery 4.23 and after a false start, I successfully made a backup to a USB Hard Drive that will boot into ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery. The Windows software seems to be fully functional.
On normal bootup, however, if I use F11 or the Access IBM button, I am taken to the original Predesktop HPA interface -- so the partition is really there. The Factory Restore appears to now be functioning if I ever wanted to use it.
My problem (or questions) relates to the "Restore Your Backups" icon. When I select it, I get the message: "IBM Rapid Restore PC is not installed. Press the enter key to reboot to Windows and install IBM Rapid Restore PC."
Therefore, that portion of the HPA is not accessible.
And, therefore, other than a factory restore, there is no way to run restore from the HPA.
    So, here are my questions:
    1. Is there anyway to put the Rescue and Recovery 4 predesktop area in this HPA?
    2. If so, would it wipe out the Factory Restore option?
    3. Should I have made at least one backup with "IBM Rapid Restore PC" before the "Rescue and Recovery 4" installer removed it?
    4. Is there any space on the HPA I can recover?
    5. Is there a tool or method to delete the "Restore Your Backups" icon if it is non-functional?
This may all seem not that important but I do care about this awesome X31 and I really would like to know how all of these competing technologies interface with each other.
    Thanks for any help.,
    Charlie

    > ... it does not support X30 or X31, this could be part of the problem.
It also says that it *** may *** work on other systems. My experience is that if the IBM/Lenovo software supports the X32 (and RNR4 does), then it will work just fine on the X31 (example: Access Connections; exceptions: drivers that are specific to the very few hardware differences like CDC daughter cards -- Bluetooth).
The existing version was uninstalled and it was "way older" than what is covered in those special instructions (thanks, I did check it out -- no directory or utility present).
This is probably the end point for me -- good advice: "If that does not work, and if R&R under Windows works, you might create Recovery media and then boot from that if you want to restore from backups."
So, here is one new idea and one new confusion:
The last "official" RNR that supports the X31 was version 3.1 but it contains this somewhat cryptic (to me) caveat:
    Consideration 12
computers that have a hidden protected area (HPA), also referred
to as PARTIES, and have the Rescue and Recovery program installed
will not be able to boot into either the PARTIES or Rescue and
Recovery workspace after recovering the original factory contents.
To enable the PARTIES area again, restore a backup using either the
Rescue and Recovery program in the Windows environment or by booting
from rescue media and then uninstall the Rescue and Recovery program.
My thought: Should I uninstall RNR4, install RNR3.1, and then upgrade to RNR4?
My confusion: There are apparently two types of predesktop areas: HPA and Type 12.
Do RNR3 and RNR4 only use Type 12? If so, can it coexist with the HPA, can it replace the HPA on its own, or do RNR3 and RNR4 not install the Type 12 space nor update the HPA if the installer finds an intact HPA?
To recap, what I have now is an HPA as it would have existed in 2004. I have a working RNR4 in Windows. The Access IBM button and F11 boot to the HPA. What I would like is an RNR4 predesktop area that can do a factory restore.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Charlie

  • Rescue and Recovery, Rapid Restore and pre-desktop area

    Hi.
I know RnR has been covered fairly extensively here, but I haven't been able to find a thread relating my specific problem so here goes...
I have an X31 with an IBM recovery disk set, now a few years old. I recently used the recovery disks to do a clean install then removed the majority of the old Thinkvantage utilities and replaced them with downloads of the latest versions. So far so good. The factory recovery from the CDs creates a pre-desktop area based on the old Rapid Restore software. This has to be uninstalled before installation of the newer Rescue and Recovery. RnR then works fine from both Windows and a Recovery CD I created.
However,  pressing the blue AccessIBM (i.e. Thinkvantage) button during startup still takes me to the old predesktop area. If I try to use the "restore backups" feature from here I am informed that Rapid Restore is not installed on the system. The "security" section of the BIOS contains a predesktop setting that can be either "normal", "disabled" or "secure". If I set it to "disabled" the blue AccessIBM button now takes me to the new Rescue and Recover workspace. However, some of the other options that were available in the old Rapid Restore pre-desktop, particularly access to PC doctor, are now not available.
Incidentally, the new Rescue and Recovery workspace seems to function independently of the original hidden partition associated with the Rapid Restore workspace - if I make this visible and delete it, I can still access Rescue and Recovery as long as the BIOS option is set to "Disabled". I presume, therefore, that RnR has created an additional hidden partition of its own?
My question, therefore, is how can I rebuild the predesktop area based on Rescue and Recovery rather than Rapid Restore but still accessible by pressing the blue button at startup, still featuring the other diagnostic software and still having security settings controlled from the BIOS.
    Grateful for any advice!

    Hi,
the basic and most importatnt information, in this case is, that RnR can detect/read backups that have been captured using the very same version as you are using right now.
So in case you captured your backup using version xx.xx.xxx1 you cannot restore, or recover your backup using the version xx.xx.xxx2. You need to us the very same version.
As Win7 uses different version of RnR, this is the root cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers

Alternatively*, you can delete the hidden system folder C:\RRBackups in Safe mode, but do rebuild another backup after this...
    Boot into Safe Mode,
    then in the Windows explorer,
    go to Tools>Folder Options>View.
Select "Show hidden files and folders.
Deselect "Hide protected operating system files"
    Apply. Delete contents of C:\RRBackups
    * I had 70% of my 160GB hard drive utilised by the R&R backups, so I deleted all my backups instead.
*I have to do a backup now...
Be extremely careful if you do this.  The backups are tracked in other places than just the folder location on the hard drive and simply deleting them from the folder (which is not expected behavior) can cause problems.  If you opt to do this, I recommend "deleting" them again via the RnR UI to clean up references in the registry, etc.
Also, if you find your backups are taking up an unusual amount of space, be sure you're running RnR 4.2.  This version cleans up some issues with Single Instance Storage (there's a patch for it on TVSU as well) that would cause the use of excessive storage.
Full disclosure: Lenovo issues my paychecks.

  • Hidden Partition for Rescue and Recovery suddenly appeared on My Computer

Hello to everyone viewing this forum. I'm from the Philippines, and this is my first time posting in the forums. I bought my Lenovo 3000 N100 Notebook from Singapore, and it's over a year old now.
Well, we all know that the built-in ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery program gives us a last resort when our laptops fail, and we all know that the hard drive partition where it resides is in a partition that is hidden, right? Well here's my problem..
I encountered a Windows problem which made me use a borrowed Windows operating system disk to repair it (via Windows startup repair), as although I have created recovery media already, I still want to back-up my data before that. Now after I have gone through the Windows Startup Repair service, and when I logged on, I was surprised to see the supposed to be hidden partition now appearing in My Computer! And as if that's not enough, when I try to boot Rescue and Recovery via the Lenovo Care button, it doesn't work anymore! Neither can I make Rescue and Recovery medium (Create Rescue Media on the Internal Hard drive) as it gives the following error:
"The Files required for creating the rescue media cannot be found."
And when I try to make Rescue Media on a CD/DVD:
"An internal error has caused this process to fail."
I would like to ask all you kind people here for your help with this issue.
I'm considering backing up all files I need via the Rescue and Recovery workspace, but since I can't access R&R I'm considering manually backing up the files I need via external storage devices, and my another question is that would my Product Recovery disks still work even though I can't access the R&R partition? This is my reserve plan in case I won't be able to fix the issue about the not-so-hidden partition, and I wouldn't want to lose my factory install reserves in that case...
    Hope for your prompt reply!

  • Power on and hard disk password issue with rescue and recovery ?

I have set a power on and hard disk password to prevent any unauthorized user to boot the computer and thats works fine but the problem is that it can be bypassed very easily by pressing the THINKVANTAGE blue button and going through the initial screen of the rescovery process.
When you reach the main screen of the recovery process just press on "restart system" and on the next boot up you won't be asked for a password and it will boot into Windows. Is there any way to prevent a user to initiate a rescue and recovery to bypass the password or even better a patch that will trigger the password screen as soon as the blue THINKVANTAGE button is pressed ?

I just recently discovered this problem as well.
I'm hoping someone can help us with this.

Need your help please Wasn't the last person to use my Laptop. noticed sometime ago when triying to log in that my screen has default to Rescue and recovery 4; what make impossible for me to access windows. please i've all i could but no success. i can do manything with PC via rescue and recovery but as you all know without windows access it's a handicape; thanks in advance or your contribution regards Tino

    Hi,
so from what I can understand, you have some issues with the OS and want to restore the system and you get the logon prompt when you try to access RnR PDA using the F11 key by system start.
If this is correct, then the reason, why you get this message is that you have entered an user name and password in the RnR GUI (security)
In case you don't know this password, then that is a bad sign. As this is now locked.
Please let me know, if I'm correct with the above assumption of your situation.

  • Rescue and Recovery AND Create Recover Media crash

    Hi,
I need some guidance on my problems with Think Vantage. I am new to this forum and overwhelmed by the volume of information.
My problem. "Rescue and Recovery" AND "Create Recover Media" crash when I attempt to use them.
I have a Lenovo  N100 0768A27 running XP. Everything is up-to-date. I have no other problems!
I have downloaded the System Tool Box but that does not want to work either.
I am running R&R version 3.01.1037.00 and I think Client Security 6.1.44.0 but is does not show in my application list only when I logon.
I must confess to turning RR off for a while as I was short of space.
I have tried updating RR to version 4.2 but cannot de-install original version.
I would appreciate some direction on who to step thru this problem and what info to use.

  • How to restore backed up files after I used Rescue and Recovery

    Hi there lenovo community,
so I'm struggling to find a solution on how to open these files right here:
    Link to image
First of all, the program I used to back up my hard drive was the Rescue and Recovery that my lenovo desktop came with. I used an external hard drive (WD My Passport, specifically) to back up my old hard drive. The problem that I'm facing right now is how I can open these files, they seem to be not working with any of the option programs the "open with" thingy offers me. If anyone knows  an easy solution for this please please respond to me immediately.. I would really really appreciate it.  I have important documents there.
    Thanks,
