Whatever the reasons are that you think the problem exists, you will not be able to resolve it on your own. Did you see this at the bottom of the support article that I suggested that you read?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by clicking here and picking a method, or if desired, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.
If the people at the form tell you to call, accept that you need to.

It sounds like you are not getting the email to reset your password. If you have a rescue email setup for your Apple ID, the reset password email will be sent there and not your Apple ID email address:
When you provide a rescue email address, all future security emails, such as password resets from iForgot, will be sent to the address provided.

itunes accounts are not the same as icloud accounts. It's okay to use the same ID for the itunes account on different devices owned by different users. That way you share purchased items. But for icloud, each user should have their own account if they want their own data, otherwise data is shared among all users.

Your first theory may be correct.
If you haven't already, change your password on your .mac account. That will stop any further action by the other fellow. Even if you can't tease out the detail of what happened exactly, you can at least fix the problem with the password change.
Also if you left on good terms, contact the new owner of the workMac and ask if s/he used your .mac account.

the settings are gone, i guess. But even worse, I cannot get the iPad2 to play Full HD thru the Apple digital AV adaptor using apps that support (and advertise this), like AVPlayer HD. This definiteley used to work before one of the last iOS upgrades. (I am now at 5.1.1).

How to reset your Apple ID security questions.
Go to appleid.apple.com, click on the blue button that says 'Manage Your Apple ID'.
Log in with your Apple ID and password. (If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, go to iforgot.apple.com first to reset your password with a password recovery email)
Go to the Password & Security section on the left side, and click on the link underneath the security questions that says 'Forgot your answers? Send reset security info email to [email]'. This will generate an automated e-mail that will allow you to reset your security questions.

Yesterday evening (Oct. 4 2010) a pop up displaying the Firefox logo suggested a security upgrade for users of 3.6. It did not appear to install properly. There was also a box that suggested an associated update for (I think) Adobe, but there was no associated button. I shut down soon after. This morning, Oct.5, my computer brought up and I.E. window and an AVG threat message suggesting that it would forcibly remove a Trojan horse, but that it could cause a system lock. It sounds like one of the rogue sites. They tell you that you are running an older version of Firefox and that Adobe Flash is out of date. They tell you to download a file called something like firefox-update.exe or ff-update.exe
That file contains a trojan.

A login password for the computer is not the password used for your Apple ID. To change a forgotten or lost password:

iCloud is not supported on Snow Leopard or lower, why bother to mention it?
The OP has an iCloud account, and that can not be opened without Lion or Mountain Lion (on a Mac), IOS5 or 6 (on an iPhone/iPad)
