I found a cheaper SATA solution for our beloved Powermacs

I've been experimenting with finding a cheaper solution to add SATA to our beloved Powermacs. I know the cost for SATA controllers can be rather high. You can do this for about $30:
Go to Amazon and buy a Lacie 130823 eSata PCI card. Buy a PCI Sata to eSata converter bracket and a cheap eSata cable. I know this will limit the speeds to about SATA 1 but it works! I now have a 320GB Sata hard drive living happily in my Quicksilver. I thought I would share.

Rogue Coder, thanks for the info! I too would like to know if this is bootable.
Allan, on the ATA-100 bus of your MDD, those $3 SATA to PATA drive adapters will give you almost the performance of a Firmtek card**. I use this one in one of my MDD's and it is bootable:
http://www.amazon.com/SATA-PATA-Drive-Interface-Adapter/dp/B002Y2NI4M/ref=pdybh_2?pf_rd_p=280800601&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=ybh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDK IKX0DER&pf_rdr=1Z68ZA0PG1HP0JAFMCHZ
I moved the Firmtek card that was in this machine to my Sawtooth where it made a much bigger impact compared to the ATA-66 bus.
**Let me clarify exactly what I have tested since it's possible that better drives could reveal greater differences between the two:
Xbench disk test scores
WD Caviar Blue WD5000KSRTL with Firmtek: 81
WD Caviar Blue WD5000KSRTL with $3 adapter: 78
WD Caviar Green WD15EADS with Firmtek: 89
WD Caviar Green WD15EADS with $3 adapter: 85
Just a note related to Green drives: Stay away from the EARS models with the 4KB sectors, but I find that the EADS models provide decent performance and very good value if you need a lot of storage space in your G4.

  • What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop?

What is the best & cheap backup solution for a macpro laptop? easy & simple to use

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components: 1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences; and, 2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Backup Solutions for our iMac

We just narrowly escaped losing our hard drive due to maxing it out - 319GB or 320 used.  The reason?  I procrastinated creating a backup solution.  Now we need to move forward and am looking for suggestions as to the best route.  As background, our system currently consists of:
    (1) Macbook Air (2012)
    (1) iMac (mid 2007, Intel)
    (1) 2wiregateway wireless router (AT&T Broadband)
Online back-up via Backblaze (am considering switching to Crashplan or Carbonite)
We need a solution that will provide:
automatic wireless back-ups of both machines though I could hardwire our desktop if need be - TC?
external disk storage for our media (e.g., photos, music and video files) - WD, SG, IOM linked to TC, needs to be backed up using TM
media server - access from Macbook Air, iPad (future), iPhone (future), any wireless device playing iTunes; e.g., Denon receiver (future need)
I purchased and tried to set-up a Seagate GoFlex Home option but the wireless set-up via the 2wire has been difficult and I've had no luck with linking it as a drive for Time Machine. I plan to return based on feedback (regarding my set-up options).  Like everyone, we want to 'future proof', however, we're NOT large media purchasers so excessive storage is not an issue - mostly photo files.  We're mainly focused on ease, durability and costs.
This is what i was thinking:
automatic wireless back-ups of both machines - Time Machine/Time Capsule ($300+)
external disk storage for our media - external harddrive (WD, SG, IOM) connected via Ethernet to TC or as it's a store server, hardwire this one (firewire) to the desktop.  This too will need to be backed up using Time Machine  ($150+)
media server - ?  Again, secondary future need
    Thoughts?

Thanks for all of the feedback. I've sat down and drawn out an updated solution (see below).  I think this will meet all of our needs but would love all and any feedback including on my drive selections/options.  Our modified 'need' list.
external disk storage for our media (e.g., photos, music and video files) [External Hard Drive FW800 connection]
automatic wireless data back-ups of both machines [Time Capsule]
bootable local back-up of both machines [External Hard Drive with Super Duper linked to Time Capsule]
media server - access from Macbook Air, iPad (future), iPhone (future) [iCloud]
    network printer connection [Time Capsule]
off-site data back-ups of both machines [Back Blaze/Carbonite]
Does this make sense?  Overkill?  Thoughts regarding Iomega drives?

  • Cheap SSD solution for Pismo (and other IDE/ATA laptops)

I have a Pismo 400 that is now relegated to web surfing duties for my children and not much else. The original Fujitsu 6 Gig hard drive was sounding more and more like farm machinery, so I thought I'd try a do it yourself solid state drive instead of picking up a laptop drive that'll never be filled up and is pretty much obsolete for any other purpose.
There's a store on eBay that sells adapters for Compact Flash memory cards so they can be plugged in as a 2.5" IDE hard drive. This places sells them for $5 Canadian with free shipping from Hong Kong, whereas in Canadian stores these are around $25. I ordered one and it came in about 10 days.
I went to a computer parts store and purchased the cheapest 8 Gig CF card listed as 133x. It came to just under $30 Cdn including taxes.
The adapter seems to have one more pin on the IDE side than the original drive (or the Mac socket has holes), but the socket on the Pismo has a rubber spacer (rather than hard plastic) so you just plug them in.
After a typical for Pismo exhausting 1-2 minute installation process, I fired it up. It didn't see the drive when I booted with an OS X 10.3 install disk. I suspect if I'd used the original OS 9 CD it would have found the drive, which was formatted FAT. I pulled the CF/IDE combo out and plugged it in to a USB/IDE adapter and formatted the card on my MacBook. Back in the Pismo the drive was found and I installed OS 9 and 10.3 and updated them to 9.2.2 and 10.3.9.
The card and adapter aren't attached to the Mac and just hang off the end of the ribbon cable in the drive cage. If I were hauling the Pismo around a lot I'd make up a foam wedge to keep it from moving too much.
I haven't done any speed tests. It runs Safari and doesn't feel any slower. Waking from sleep should be a lot quicker.
The nicest thing is the Pismo is now silent.
There are bigger and faster CF cards, but they cost a lot more.

I have been wanting to try this for a while, but not on my Pismo, Lombard or Wallstreet which all run OSX but on my older 3400 or 1400.
Would they work running OS8 or 9 on the CF card ?

  • Found nice cheap leather case for my MicroPh

    See attached link:
    http://www.daydeal.com/Oval_Belt_Clip_Leather_Pouch_-p-8568.html
I had a nasty spill with my ZMP last week which rendered it broken. I was listening to it while it was in the Micro cradle and clip and my headphone cords got stuck on something and the player flew across concrete and slammed into a wooden fence. The headphone jack broke (could only hear out of left side, not right).
Anyway, I bought a new ZMP and wanted a nice sturdy case and found the one above at daydeal.com. It was only $9.99 with free shipping in the US so I figured what the heck. It's perfect for me ... yes, I know you can't access controls through the front but the whole flap opens up easy (magnetized) and the ZMP slides out effortlessly. I use Sony EX5's so it is a right-angle headphone jack and it fits perfectly (if you use a straight plug, you may have to cut a hole in the case. Another thing I like is that I can wrap my headphone cords around the open flap where the magnet is and it takes up the extra slack so it's not dangling to get caught on things. Lastly, the beltclip part on this case is big, tight and sturdy ... it shouldn't fall off or get pulled off of your belt or pants (not easily anyway) but I love how wide and tight this beltclip is.
Also, I wrap my EX5's wires around the magnetized flap when not in use so it has on-board earbud storage.
Great deal for $9.99 ... it's leather, too ...Message Edited by mdscriber3 on 02-2-2006 0:58 AMMessage Edited by mdscriber3 on 02-2-2006 05:43 PM

  • Solution for OPML error in SOA suite Startup (Win Vista x64 and older)

    h1. Hi Folks!
When installing SOA suite on Vista 64 bit I encountered lots of problems. One of them was the following upon starting the SOA suite:
At 33% in the progress bar, the starter gives an error, returning a question about OPMN.
Caused by: oracle.ias.opmn.optic.OpticBadConnectException: Error connecting to OPMN (is it running?): Connection refused: connect
Being a newbie in this field, I resisted to learn everything (Oracle as part of a course of Busines Process Integration Laboratories at the University) about the works behind the package. Unfortunately, OPMN drove me crazy for days!
The main problem for OPMN is the unability for the system to handle certain issues.
One of the issues: When in a testing environment that is unstable (i.e. a laptop) some issues occur:
    * sleep resume is not supported
    * hibernation resume is not supported
    * restart is not always working for all processes
    (tested this with XP32 & XP64 SP2; SP 3; Vista 32 and Vista 64)
The main issue is with OPMN and the services that are started and controlled through it.
A solution for our workgroup has been made:
    -create a reset.bat file
    -use the following code:
    +@echo off+
ECHO Step 1 in the server reset is running: Shutdown OPMN processes
    D:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\opmn\bin\opmnctl shutdown
ECHO Please continue the reset sequence by pressing any key
    pause
ECHO Step 2 in the server reset is running: Restarting OPMN processes
    D:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\opmn\bin\opmnctl startall
    END
The commands regarding ECHO and the pause break can be omitted, but for supervision it is better to see if all processes are started in working order.
Please note the absolute paths, these are from my personal setup as they are the default from the manual. Adjust if necessary.
As User Account Control (UAC) does interfere a lot with programs in Vista (32 & 64) and from SP3 also with XP, please assign administrator rights to the reset.bat file.
This solution should take care of the "OPMN (is it running?)" issue, without rebooting or cold restarting the server.

  • High Availabilty Solutions for Oracle R12.

    Hi Gurus,
We are looking for a HA solution for our R12 E-Business Suite. Currently we have options like HP Service Guard from HP.
Kindly provide me your valuable suggestion for HA solution from Oracle side.
Please kindly provide me the details as well like 'Licensing, Advantages, Disadvantages, pre-requistes, ease of Adminstation etc.
    Highly appreciating your replies.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your replies. Does Oracle RAC need extra licensing?Absolutely, yes. RAC is neither cheap nor free. ;-)
I would like to have enough information before i can go to our sales representative.
Actually i am planning to give presentation on High Avaialability options for Oracle R12.
and i assume i will be asked for the lisensing. i need your helpA conversation with your Oracle Sales representative will be far more informative than asking questions about licensing on these forums. If you want baseline information about license costs, you can check the Oracle Store (https://oraclestore.oracle.com), but you may be able to negotiate a better rate with Oracle Sales.
Update: In other words, "what Hussein said." I really need to refresh these threads more often when composing a reply, especially if I wander away and come back. ;-)

  • Solutions for previewing HDV via video monitors ?

I have recently been given the task of setting up a video editing suite combining:
    FCP6
    HVR-1500 decks
    Panasonic BT-LH1700WE LCD video monitors
    FX7E HDV cameras
I've read that it is not possible to preview HDV via firewire and this seems to be the case thus rendering the Video preview monitors useless via the decks at least.
My question is what would we need to get in order to get a live broadcast preview to the monitors ?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • How to index a Network Share (AFP) for our workgroup

    hi together.
after researching for a digital asset management solution for our acency my point is that neither cumulus, portfolio, mediabeacon or fotostation have the power and features i am looking for.
so i decided to investigate on using iviewmedia with tiger server and spotligte. did anybody have luck already to set something like that up?
    thanx christof

i cannot confirm that the index files are maintained by the server. not even the modificationdates or filsizes change. veryfied via terminal.
Sorry, but something's not right. Try again, but try deleting the existing .Spotlight-V100 folder from the share point in question at the server first, then reindex the share point while it's mounted from a client with read & write access. It's important that you issue the mdutil -i on and mdutil -p commands at a client computer, while the share point is mounted as a volume. Although the server will maintain an index in a folder (share point), mdutil doesn't seem to work unless the share point is mounted. (Further, mounting AFP share points at the server itself is not recommended - and not possible from the GUI. You can do it with mount_afp if you want to freeze your machine. )
But, yes, I can confirm that the contents of the .Spotlight-V100 folders do change. It appears that the indexing process happens every minute, so sometimes newly added items won't appear until the next minute has passed.
The manual page for mdutil also indicates that "-p" will store the index on the real volume instead of locally.
And, yes, you can clear the contents of /private/var/db/Spotlight-V100; it's a cache folder, and won't harm your searches of published indices.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help needed for choosing Cisco recommended VM Backup solution for UCCE & CUCM 8.5

    Hi
We are planning to install a reliable backup solution for our UCCE platform ( ESX(i) 4.x & 5.x  )
if someone can share the details of Cisco recommended VM ware backup solution for UCCE 8.5 , it would be really helpful .
    Regards
    Renni John

    Hello,
    -    Snapshot procedure of VMs is not supported by Cisco for UCCE servers.  Please refer table "VMware Feature Support for Contact Center 8.0(2) through 10.x" on below link:
    o    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_VMware_Requirements#Supported_Editions_and_Features_of_VMware_vSphere_ESXi.2C_VMware_vCenter_and_VMware_vSphere_Client
    -    Same above link refers to use "Copy" feature of VM to take backup of servers, but it is a very lengthy procedure which requires extensive command line knowledge of UCS.  Moreover VM should be shut down for this procedure.   This can be used as one time backup of server; but cant be used as scheduled back up method.

  • SCSI vs. SATA?  + cheap SCSI solutions?

Does anyone out there know of cheap and reliable SCSI storage solutions?
I'm looking into SATA drives as well, but can I get away with using one a SATA drive to edit uncompressed HD?
What's the verdict of those editing HD - any problems with SATA?
    Thanks...

SCSI is OLD technology. Very expensive for small drive sizes.
SATA Raids for editing uncompressed HD? HECK YEAH.
    www.caldigit.com S2VR HD
    www.sonnettech.com Fusion 500P
    www.macgurus.com Burly box
    www.weibetech.com Silver SATA V
Raid 4-5 drives together and you can get 200-230MB/s...enough for one stream of Uncompressed HD. 8 or more gets you 400-450MB/s and is plenty enough.
And you can get this for under $6000.

  • A solution for Itunes error: Disc burner or software not found

This solution, which I found on another forum, worked for me.
IT APPEARS THAT WHEN GEARAspiWDM GETS INSTALLED IT DOES NOT CREATE A "MULTI-STRING VALUE", IT CREATES A "STRING VALUE", WHICH DOES NO GOOD. THE UPPERFILTERS VALUE MUST BE A MULTI STRING VALUE, NOT A "STRING VALUE".
    1. Download the latest gear driver at:
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm
    2. Once that is installed you have to DELETE the UPPERFILTERS entry in your system registry, AND CREATE A NEW UPPERFILTERS VALUE at:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 (of course you knew once you get there just click on "favorites" in your system registry and add it your favorites).
YOU WILL BE DELETING THE UPPER VALUE: DONT WORRY YOU WILL BE CREATING A NEW ONE. ________________________________________________________
    To Start the Registry Editor
Click on Start > Run, type Regedit and press OK
    ! WARNING! !
Be very careful while you are running the registry editor.
You can easily render your machine unable to boot if you play with settings you aren't familiar with!
You may want to immediately back up your Registry before doing any editing.
GO HERE IN THE SYSTEM REGISTRY:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318
FIND THE UPPER FILTER VALUE AND DELETE IT!
    1. WHILE IN HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 using the system registry editor: EDIT > NEW > MULTI STRING VALUE. IT MUST BE A "Multi String Value".
    2. NAME IT UpperFilters.
    3. Once it's created and named, right click on it and select "Modify".
    4. Enter this into the box that will pop up: GEARAspiWDM AS SOON AS YOU TYPE THE GEARAspiWDM PRESS ENTER. This "carriage return" is required.
THE VALUE FOR THE UpperFilters should be: REGMULTISZ (Which means it is a multi string value).
    5. REBOOT

Try looking on the manufacturer of your Disc Drive's website for any drivers that you might need.
