I freed up space on my hard drive now TC won't back up.

I have a 2TB HD and a 2TB TC.
My HD had gotten down to around 250GB free when I cleaned some items out and got it up to about 280GB free.
Since I did that, my TC will no longer backup.  It says it needs 2.06TB and only 2TB is available.
The free space on my HD has been at 260GB or below for weeks if not months now with no backup problems, so why did freeing up 30GB start this issue?
I've even erased the TC disk completely to start a brand-new backup and it still won't work.

Do a verify of the disk.. as something is very wrong..
Perhaps a reset of TM and point it at the TC again.

  • Filled the hard drive, now it won't find hardrive on start.

Was recording video straight to Imac hard-drive. Was a bit careless in watching space being taken up and in the middle of day two for auditions my computer shuts down, "BLACKOUT". Power back on the thing with the feeling I filled the HD space. I was down to the megabytes . Ever-since the computer has run SUPER Slow at processing anything for a week now.
    Note:
Vital Data on Hardrive I need so can't just wipe it clean.
Attempt 1: Disk repair with OS Disc. There was an inconsistency in file count and repair was sucessful. But computer runs really slow and actually doesn't even start anymore, shows folder with question mark. #fail
Attempt 2: TARGET DISK MODE Tried copying the files to another mac with Imac in target disk mode but transfer is speed ridiculous. I'm talking about moving 254megabytes and it taking over 15minutes and gets stuck at 10megabytes. #fail
Attempt 3: Maybe its just overheating due to whatever. Dropped some fans in the area to keep it even cooler. Circulating the hot air away and introducing the rooms AC, lol #fail
Need help!! Before I bring this thing to be looked at anyone has a solution? Figured I filled the harddrive and messed up vital space the computer needs to operate with.

Macs need a minimum of 10-15% of the HD space left available to run well, considering you have managed to fill yours up you can either suffer through the offloading some files to an external HD or start over. If you have backed up, then I'd recommend doing an erase and install then restoring from your backup. Then you can start with a clean slate and manage you space better, if you haven't been backing in up and your system is so full you cannot offload files I'm afraid you're out of luck and are in the process of learning a tough lesson.

  • I copied library to a new hard drive, now iphoto won't recognize files.

I am new to iPhoto, so be gentle. My daughter uses it a lot, and now I seem to have messed up her library. We are using iPhoto 4.0.3. OS 10.4.11
I installed a new hard drive. I copied the iTunes and iPhoto libraries to the new larger hard drive. I copied the iphoto library to a designated folder (not the default folder). My daughter has now moved the photos into their default location, and advised iPhoto of where to look - User/Daughter/Pictures/iPhoto library. When she opens iPhoto her photos don't appear. When she picks a photo and drops it into iPhoto, the message appears,
"could not be imported because an unrecognizable type or file may not contain valid data."
The files are jpegs that open fine in Photoshop, Preview etc.
I did some reading and saw reference to deleting the file com.apple.iphoto.plist. Tried that, no success.
I would appreciate your assistance. Like I say, I don't know iPhoto at all. As a second question, I have a G4 with a dual 1.8 processor, what version of iPhoto/iLife should I be looking to upgrade to?
    Thanks for your help.

"could not be imported because an unrecognizable type or file may not contain valid data."
That is the standard error you get when you try to import a photo that already resides inside the iPhoto Library folder. It prevents duplication in your library.
It sounds like you followed the correct procedure, but let's double-check. iPhoto can be run from a location other than the default. When you moved the library, did you copy the whole iPhoto Library folder as one intact unit? How did your dtr point iPhoto to the library? The correct way is to hold down Option while launching, select "Choose (or Find) Library" then navigate to the iPhoto Library folder and Open. Is this what you/she did? If so, perhaps try again?
As a second question, I have a G4 with a dual 1.8 processor, what version of iPhoto/iLife should I be looking to upgrade to?
I am very happy with iLife '06 on my 1.4 GHz G4 mini with 1 GB RAM. You could get iLife '08 for iPhoto 7, but be aware that iMovie 7 won't load on your machine because it requires a G5 or Intel machine. I made the decision not to upgrade because I'm happy with my current performance, and I think that the video-intensive and RAM-hog iPhoto 7 would bog down my mini. You can still buy iLife '06 from Amazon.com. See the system requirements:

  • Cloned my hard drive. now acrobat won't work. just opens for 7 seconds and then closes itself. huh?

Anybody got a clue why acrobat wont work after cloning entire computer to a new hard drive?
I 'repaired ' the installation and rebooted twice.
Acrobat just shuts down after 5-10 seconds.
    I need help.

Mavericks is free but a jump from 10.6 to 10.9 might break a lot of other software (particularly if running any PPC-only generation software) which could be costly to replace.  Yes, it will have to be done someday but if the OP's computer holds out a few more years then the OP will have saved buying all the Mavericks generation software that will be broken when OS 12.2 comes out and can make the jump directly.
So says somebody who still runs a G4 with iTunes 7.5 and is not looking forward to the day it dies and has to buy the "newest and best".

  • I have a problem after upgarding the OS Yosemite and time machine. It says not enough space on external hard drive when I should write over older backups? thanks. late 2009 imac 3.06 8GBimac

    Hey rgmhughes7,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the Time Machine backup disk is full. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Erratic amount of free space on my hard drive...

Can someone please tell me if they think this is strange, or should I not worry about it.
About a week ago I had 520 gigs of free space on my hard drive (its a 1 TB drive). I decided to defrag it simply because it had been a long time since I had done so. That went off without a hitch. I did not even think to check if the amount of free space had changed afterwards. I then decided to use Disk Utility to 'Erase Free Space'. That ran fine, but afterwards I was shocked to see that I now had 605 gigs (!!!) of free space, meaning either the defrag or the erasing of 'Free Space' freed up some 85 gigs (). Okay, strange I thought, but no complaints here. A couple days went by and I happened to glance at the free space and WOAH, its dropped back down to 570, even though I've added, AT MOST, 5 gigs of photos, music etc. Is it me or does this seem really strange...? Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this, reasoning etc...
    Much appreciated
    Adam

    Hi A,
The used and free space amount are subject to some considerations as use and approach to data storage, here is a link to a previous question about it with reference to two other related posts http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12743931#12743931
It is also curious that when you create and save a data file it will report a different size once you open and save it again even without changing contents.
    Good luck, K.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro cs5 has eaten a free space on the hard drive!

The initial video file was about 1Gb, I needed to cut it and add audio to it. I tried exporting with DV PAL encoding, there was about 15Gb of free space on the hard drive. It took a long time to export and somewhere at 90% it showed the message that free space on the drive was out. I closed Premiere, the target directory where encoded AVI should be exported was empty. The search by name doesn't find anything. Disk cleanup freed only 5Gb. Could you please tell me what the directory where Premiere store a temporary files while Encoding Sequence.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hello, I have a very similar problem.  A few days ago I was alarmed to see all of a sudden my Main Hard Drive full.
The editing station that I'm working on is a new computer and all media and scratch disks are assigned to a project folder on another hard drive.
I started digging through the main drive to find what is loading the drive and realized that Media Cache files folder has over 30 Gigabytes of data in it!
In the Adobe Premiere Media Settings there is an option to redirect the Cache files or Save them next to originals check box (Which I selected).
This brings me to very important questions:
What is the correct process of setting up Adobe Premiere project so there are no temporary, cache, pre-renders.... clog up the main drive or get scattered elsewhere? It would be very preferable to keep everything in one project folder.
Should I redirect or keep the files with originals?
Besides Scratch disks and Media Cache files are there any other files generated by the program?   If there is, where can I find them?
Once I complete my project and want to completely delete it from my computer, what is the correct way of removing everything so nothing is left over from the deleted project?
Answers to these questions are very important for me and I would be very grateful to get answers to them :-)

  • Boot camp does not give me the option to make a partition, instead it just gives me the options to download windows support software, install windows 7, etc. I do not want any of these, I want to set aside the space on my hard drive!

Hello, I wish to install Linux Ubuntu on my macbook pro by using boot camp to set aside space. Whenever I load the Boot Camp Assistant application out of the utilities folder in applications, it only gives me the options to download windows support software and install windows 7. I do not want this, I just want to be able to slide that little bar to set aside the space on my hard drive that i can use for Linux. I tried just downloading the windows support software but my internet is immensely slow and it has been an hour or so since it started and it's not even half way done. When this download is finished will i get the option to partition or will i just be faced with those same options?
I am on a 13" macbook pro, with apple OS X snow leopard version 10.7.2
A lot of the data on this macbook was transferred over from my old macbook i had.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
    Thank you for reading.

Well thank you for your honesty.  Apple requires you have to have a Mac to develop iPhone apps, ergo my foray into OS-Xland. No way around it that one except for running OSX in a VM, which would have probably saved me some quid, true enough.
BUT for those interested parties: VirtualBox has a startup script in /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox that will prevent OSX from fully booting on the initial (and required) rEFIt boot cycle. Once I temporarily moved that out of the StartupItems rEFIt went in as expected.
FYI, the openSUSE desktop running native is a little peppier than OSX native which was a nice surprise.  Now if the Mac just had more open source software we would have a deal. (:

  • I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.

  • My 'backup' is taking up a huge space on my hard drive but I have an external hard drive for my back ups - how do i get rid of this?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine makes local snapshots in all portable Macs with Lion or Mountain Lion. They are made in the internal drive and they are removed when your hard disk gets full, so you don't have to worry about it.
If you want to delete them, turn off Time Machine and turn it on every time you want to make a backup. You can also turn them off manually without having to turn off Time Machine, or you can delete those local snapshots > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html

  • Why is there so much available space on my hard drive after installing Lion?

I just made the decision to  go ahead and install the new operating system "Lion"
I backed everything up to my Time Capsule and I have an older back up of everything on an external hard drive.
Now I have two questions and one task.
Why is there so much available space on my hard drive and where did my iPhoto library go after installing the new operating system?
My task is to restore my most up to date iPhoto library which I assume is on my time capsule.
How should I approach this task?

    Hi entresoft,
I am not sure how to do this. I am not a very literate computer person but have a vague idea of what you are suggesting.
If I do manage to figure out how to do what you have suggested will this restore my iPhoto Library and I assume maybe other files?
    Thanks!

Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External?
