I frequently have to erase and restore my new flash drive

I am having a problem with my new flashdrive. I got it cause I accidentally fried my old one (the computer didnt fry it, its a long story). First problem I had was when i plugged it in, It didnt show up, not even in disk utility. Eventually it did (only in disk utility) on a different computer and I was able to restore the flash drive. Then it would show up on the desktop of my other laptop (both are mac's, one is a 2007 macbook pro (the laptop isnt the problem, dont judge it by its age it works like new) and the one i got it to show up on is a 2011 macbook pro (I think?)). Anyway, now it showed up on my 2007 macbook pro. I unplugged it (ejected it first) and then later plugged it back in. It wouldn't show up on desktop but it did this time in disk utility and had to erase and repair it. then it showed up. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, it showed up. sometime later, I plugged it in again and same thing. erase and repair. I have no idea why this is happening, I didnt lose anything i didnt have on the drive cause it was on my computer, but obviously i cant have this keep happening if I have irreplacable data on it. Please help me! By the way the 2007 macbook pro is running lion but the other macbook pro is running mavericks. Thank You!

Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • Update iOs 4.x to 6.x - do I really have to erase and restore device?

Do I really have to "erase and restore your device" as stated at the top of this support page:

in order to update iOS 4.x to 6.x (iPhone 4)?

    Yes.
See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • Erase and restore created new problems

I was having problems with my firewire ports not recognizing my external drive, which also seemed to be affecting my Pro Tools program (it also runs through firewire.) After un and reinstalling Pro Tools and trying a new Firewire drive with no success, I wiped the computer clean, reinstalled the OS and and restored from a Time Machine Backup.
Now when I try to open Safari, iTunes, or Mail they abruptly quit and show an error message. I'm getting a new iMac shortly, but I'd like to resolve this particular issue in the meantime. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine and Restoring to new Hard Drive

Computer: Intel Core Duo iMac, Model iMac 7,1
My hard drive bit the dust about a week ago (Work supplied computer). Everything is backed up through Time Machine. I took it into the local Apple repair service with a OS 10 (10.5.4) disk.
Had a new drive put in. The tech told me that the disk supplied was not the correct one and as a favor, he went ahead and installed 10.6.5.
Problem I have now is that I cannot restore from my Time Machine back-up. They told me to go ahead, put in the 10.5.4 disk, restart with it holding the "C" key and when it comes up, go to Utilities and restore from back-up (Time Machine). I have don that but as soon as it comes up, I get a message that says "Disk cannot be installed on this computer." I hit OK and go to utilities anyway (just a shot in the dark), select "Restore from back-up" and nothing happens.
I'm sure that going from the old to new OS is probably the reason for this. I really just wanted to restore it to what it was without having to go in sort files and redo all of the software, etc. So I sit here with a good computer running 6.5 and all my files sitting in a back-up folder on the desktop.
Is there a way to get this problem resolved? Help is appreciated.

Thanks for the help. Got the drive erased at least think I did (it was quick).
Did you reformat it? (and yes, it's quick). If the shop put the wrong partition map scheme or format on it, that could explain what you're seeing.
And let me be sure I understand: Your Mac was running Leopard, and the shop installed Snow Leopard, right?
And the 10.5.4 disc you're using is either the one that came with that Mac (gray), or a retail Leopard disc (black) that you purchased later?
*EDIT: If either of those is wrong, stop now and post back*
    |
and when I start it from the disk, it still tells me that the disk cannot be installed on the computer.
Which disk is that, your Leopard Install disc or the internal HD? Do you get that when you start up (ie, never see the select your language, etc), or when you select +Restore System from Backup?+
If the HD is set up ok, I guess it's possible the backups, or at least the OSX part, are so badly corrupted the Installer doesn't know what to do with it.
Try Repairing your backups, via the copy of Disk Utility on your Install disc.
If all else fails, install OSX. When your Mac restarts, you might be able to use +Setup Assistant,+ per #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
But it may not like your backups, either. If so, set up an account with a name different from any on your backups. Then we can try some other things.

  • Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

  • My iPad (new generation) keeps "crashing" ( losing most apps not related )  requiring a complete reset/erase and restore.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I would like to know what is causing this problem.

My new iPad keeps "crashing" (losing apps, usually not Apple).  This requires me to do a reset/erase and restore from backup.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • IPhone 5s restored from 4s all but my photos and won't finish.  Have tried reset and restore several times but always the same thing. Pat bottom of screen it shows downloading but no pictures transfer.

Have tried 4 times to reset, erase and restore but always the same result.  Everything restores except my photos. When I go to photos at the bottom of the screen it says downloading but the pictures never transfer.  Every time I turn my phone on it asks to continue restore but it never finishes. It won't let me upgrade to the latest iOS due to incomplete restoration.

How long has it been since you let the restore just happen? Sometimes photos are what takes the longest to bring back from an iCloud back up. I would recommend that you let it just keep restoring for about 2-3 days and see if more photos come back than what you're experiencing. Also make sure that you are connected to wifi as much as possible so that those photos can be downloaded faster. It is a waiting and being patient kind of thing. I did an iCloud restore from a backup that took 4 days to finish bringing down all my photos.

  • On Nov. 22, after having to erase and restore my Western Digital external hard drive (per WD tech support) then rebacking up the iMac, noted that three events put in iPhoto in Sept., Oct.

On Nov. 22, after having to erase and restore my WD My Passport for Mac external hard drive (per WD tech support) then rebacking up the iMac, I noted that three events loaded into iPhoto in Sept., Oct. and early Nov. had disappeared. They certainly had been there because I printed out several images from these events.  Now they have vanished but everything through August and after Nov. 22 is there. Seems impossible. How  could something disappear from the hard drive? Apple tech was unable to explain or provide a solution. Has anyone else ever had something like this happen?

How did you reformat the EHD? It should be OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.
If the drive is formatted correctly do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What problems have you been having with iPhoto?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Erase and Restore - Which disc to use?

I'm trying to install Windows using BootCamp, and I'm getting the "Your disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" message.  I understand that I need to backup my files, erase and restore my whole system.  (Thanks to everyone who has answered that question multiple times on multiple forums!)
My question is, which disc do I use to restore my system? I have an early 2008 iMac, and it came with both a "Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD" (a single DVD), and two "For Mac Computers Mac OS X Install Disc 1 / 2" (two disc set).  Do I use the Snow Leopard install DVD, or do I use the generic two-disc install discs, when I restore my system?
Also, I'm currently up-to-date with Lion - Will I be able to re-install Lion from the App Store without having to pay again, or will it be re-installed when I restore my files from my TM backup, or will I need to re-purchase Lion (that wouldn't make sense obviously).
    Thanks!

Brilliant!  Using Command-R I was able to access the disc utility and repair my disc.  After that I was able to partition with no problem.  So I ended up not having to erase and restore everything - excellent!
    Thanks for the help.

All you have to do is connect the iPod to our computer and update via iTunes. You do not have to seperately erase and restore the iPod. That is done automatically as part of the update process.
    To update see:
iOS 4: Updating your device to iOS 5 or later
You need iTunes 10.5 or later on the computer. Y will go to iOS 5.1.1. the last update fopr the 3G

  • Stuck on grey Apple screen, how can I erase and restore back to original?

I've been trying to restore my imac G4 flat panel back to its factory settings, as I have recently backed up my necessary files on an external hard drive. It came with Panther and I upgraded to Tiger, but now I don't have any of the disks. I don't care if it restores back to Panther, I just want to erase and restore it. I tried to download and mount the restore disc and do it from there, but now its stuck on the grey apple screen. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jared, and a warm welcome to the forums!

Can you explain what that is, I've never heard of it being downloadable!>

  • Once I have moved my iTunes media file to my new mac, will I have to erase and sync my iPod?

I have successfully managed to move my itunes media file from my windows pc to my new mac and all is well. However, of course it hasnt copied my itunes, its just copied all the stuff in it. So information about the number of times a song has been played or any playlists have not been copied over. Can i get this information? What will happen when I plug in my iPod to sync? Will I have to erase and sync?

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.
