I get an Error 1402 Could not open key: and the update fails. How do I fix this problem. Please Help

ERROR 1402. Could Not Open Key:  HKEY_LOCAL_MAHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN\OPTIONAL COMPONENTS\IMAIL

You  could try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all traces of any existing versions of Reader prior to installing the version you want and updating it as required.  This utility is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can conflict with Win 7, but you can still find it in sites like http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

  • Error 1402: Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE... During Installation

    Hello,
When I try to install LabView (v7.1 or v8.0) I get the following error:
"Error 1402: Could not open key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\LVDB.Application\CLSID. Verify that
you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
    personnel."
I have full administrator privileges on my computer and I am able to
modify that key manually using the registry editor. When I click the
"Yes" button to continue the installation it will complete but then
when I launch LabView I get the following error:
"The requested feature is unavailable on "localhost"".
Can you help me get LabView up and running?
    Thanks,

The Adobe knowledgebase article actually pointed me in the right
direction and I was able to solve the issue. Thanks to all who gave
advise, you guys are the reason these forums work!
The error message was actually coming from the Microsoft Installer, not
from anything related to National Instruments. Also, ironically, what
the message said was spot on with one exception, while I personally had
access to the registry key, the installer didn’t. What I ended up doing
was going into the registry using regedit and setting the permissions
on the key in questions such that “Everyone” had full access. After
that I uninstalled LabView then reinstalled and it worked fine this
time. The step by step follows:
    1) Open the registry editor by selecting "Run" from the start menu and then typing in "regedit".
    2) Browse through the registry and select the entry mentioned in the error message.
    3) Choose "Permissions..." from either the edit menu or by right-clicking on the registry key's parent directory.
    4) Click the "Advanced" button to add a new user.
    5) Type in "Everyone" as the new user and click OK (it may not be
necessary to give everyone full control but this is what I did and it
    worked).
    6) Configure the permissions for user "Everyone" to "Full Control"
    7) Uninstall LabView (if necessary) and re-install.
    Best regards,
    -Ben

  • Error 1402.could not open key:UNKNOWN\MPAPI.WAPCON...

error 1402.could not open key:UNKNOWN\MPAPI.WAPCONNServerMP.4\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact support personel....

It sounds that there is some permission problems in your register.
Anyway, if you ignore that error message, does installation continue?

  • Quicktime Error 1402 Could not open key (defaulticon)

When trying to install Quicktime 7 (standalone) I get the same error I have seen posted by so many others....Error 1402 Could not open key....
    HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\QUICKTIME.QT\DEFAULTICON
I have tried every suggestion by Apple, Microsoft, the discussion fourm, and everything I have found via a Google search.
When I use regedit to view the permissions for the Quicktime.qt folder (it's not expandable so I can't locate a defaultIcon folder), I can add new users (everyone) and give them full permissions but when I select OK I get a message that says "Unable to save permissions on quicktime.qt...Access is denied).
(I am the only computer user and I am using the administrator account).
    Note XP home addition.
    Thanks
    Anybody have any (new) ideas??????????

What happens when you delete the registry key or all the keys associated with QT?
This Microsoft article though claiming not to be for XP or 2000, has something interesting to say under Cause.

After removing any program I clear out the registry of left over keys from it. Just something I do. I find I can still miss some. This program Windows XP Manager is very good at finding what I miss, and can also defrag the registry. It will also back up the registry for you also. You might want to take a look at it, where you problem seems to stem from the registry.

Scroll down to Cleaner in the link on XP Manager, it explains what it does in the registry.

  • Error 1402 could not open key: unknown\graph3dctrl.graph3dctrlproxy\clsid

    Hi,
I've got the following error during the installation of labview 7.0 student edition on my PC that works with XP.
    The error is :
"error 1402 could not open key: unknown\graph3dctrl.graph3dctrlproxy\clsid verify that you have sufficient access to that key"
I have the administrator right on my PC and I seek the key on registry and it doesn't exist at all.
I already have installed successfully  the Labview 6.i student edition. I tried to uninstall all national application and reinstall the labview 7.0 but same error appear.
My opinion is that the key cannot be opened because it doesn't exist.
What can I do to install the new labview 7.0?

Hi Assennatog, the problem could be in the registry keys that are still present even if you completely uninstalled all the NI SW. So, after having uninstalled every NI apllication, try to execute the keys deleting proccess, by using MSIBlast, in the way it's explained in the attached doc. Ciao!

  • Acrobat Pro won't install: Error 1402: Could not open key on install attempt

I've been stuck in install hell for the past week. Here's my issue: I have Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium and want to install it on a PC running MS Vista, but when I attempt an install, I cannot install Adobe Acrobat 8.
Reading the event viewer, I get the following type error:
Product: Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional -- Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{8AD0743E-113B-4E26-BA21-1E9A71098F41}\InprocSe rver32. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Here's the problem: I'm basically playing whack-a-mole. Each time I go into regedit to change the registry permission for the named folder and attempt to install again, I get a new error saying that the Adobe install software could not open some other key. Each install attempt takes 15-20 min, and I must have done this 20+ times over the past week.
I've done all the obvious things like uninstalling everything Adobe (including my browsers Flash plug-in), running the CS3Clean software, running Vista in selective start-up, running setup as an administrator, barking at the moon, ect.
All the affected permission issues some to reside in the CLSID folder, but there is no way for me to set the permissions there and have them apply to all the subfolders without getting some sort of "whatever, we do what we want" error.
I'm at my wits end here. I've posted this to the Adobe customer support page, and four days after the supposed 25 hour turn-around, I still have yet to hear from Adobe. Any help would certainly be appreciated.

i suggest a best way to solve this maan,
    follow this,
create a new administrator user on your xp,
log off current user n log on to new admin user,
    install yr program,
    and
log off this admin user n log on to previous user,
n continue to use yr installed program
    tahts it

  • Error 1402: Could not open key UNKNOWN\SliderCtrl.SlideCtrlProxy\CLSID

I have two users.  User A wrote an application using LabVIEW 7.1, including an installer, and gave said application and installer to User B.  User B has 8.0 and 8.1 LabVIEW RTE's installed properly.  When trying to run the application installer, or just the 7.1 RTE installer alone, the following error occurs every time:
Error 1402.  Could not open key:
    UNKNOWN\SlideCtrl.SlideCtrlProxy\CLSID
I took the registry info from my machine (had 7.1 installed on it at one time; currently has 8.2 and 8.5), exported everything with "SlideCtrl" in it, imported those into User B's registry, double checked the permission in the appropriate places, re-ran ... same problem.   Help?

I found the answer on my own, documenting for the next poor soul ... this was under WinXP
    * Go into regedt32
    * Right-click on HKCR and select "Permissions" -OR- Click on HKCR and choose Edit->Permissions
    * Add the current user and set permissions for Full Control and Read.
It is NOT sufficient to give "Everyone" Full Control and Read, it needs that user id.  Brilliant ... current user is not part of "Everyone".

  • Error 1402: Could not open key ..... IMAIL

I am trying to install Adobe Reader 9 on a friend's computer.  He desperately needs it to print pdf documents.
I have tried everything I know, including removing all traces of Adobe from the registry and from the files.  I don't seem to be able to remove the file pdfshell.dll, though.  Every time I download Adobe Reader 9.4 to install it , I get the following error code:
    Error 1402_Could not open key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\OptionalComponents\IMAIL
Then the system backs out of the operation.
    What can I do?

  • Acrobat Updater keeps failing...shows error 1402 (Could not open key).  Why?

I bought Acrobat Pro XI, but keep getting an error 1402 when trying to update.  Why?

update manually, Adobe - Acrobat : For Windows
if that fails with the same error, check if you have more than one installation of acrobat and/or reader causing a problem.

  • Error 1402 Could not open key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Installer

    Hi all,
Running Windows 2003 SP2 Terminal Server and receiving this error when trying to uninstall / install adobe reader and acrobat. Originally had Acrobat 8.0.1 and Reader 9.3 installed and users started receiving errors relating to Acrobat. When I tried to uninstall I received the error above.
I have tried everything I can find on the net and in these forums including:
Using control panel to uninstall - no deal
    Re-install Acrobat
Checking / changing registry permissons including checking owner, replacing inherited perms etc
Deleting and recreating the reg entries
    Using subinacl
    Using Windows Install Cleanup
    Manual removal.
I now have uninstalled reader (cleanly) and acrobat however I am still receiving this error when trying to reinstall reader. The permissions are correct so im really stuck. If I cant sort this out I will have no option but to build a new TS machine and I really dont want to do that just because Adobe Reader has buggered my registry permissions.
    Any thoughts/ideas greatfully accepted ....

Have tried as two different domain adinistrators and local admin - same error each time. Resigning myself to rebuilding that terminal server which isnt a quick job - it wont be getting any adobe products installed on it!!
