I get the error "itunes library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)."

I recently installed iTunes on a new laptop with Windows 7.  Why do I get the error "iTunes library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)?"

Have been able to resolve this issue?... I have just exeperienced it and not happy that I can't resolve it.

The error message I get on my PC is "The ITunes library file cannot be saved" An unknown error occurred (-50)and my music library has disappeared.  I recently tried to copy a CD to my library - it appeared to copy ok but then did not appear in my music library.  The library does not show up even when my iPad is connected to my PC.  My entire library is now held on my iPad and I wish to have it in iTunes so I can sync my iPhone to it as well.  Help?

Don't know what changed today but it downloaded and installed on the shuffle. So far so good.

iTunes comes up saying the iTunes library files cannot be saved. an unknown error occured
    what should i do

Note: Close iTunes completely before doing any of this.
After getting this error, I found a bunch of Temp files in the same folder as my iTunes library. The thing that stuck me as odd about this was that there were 4-5 of them labeled "Temp File.xml", "Temp File2.xml", etc. and when I tried to select any of them, the selected file(s) would mysteriously disappear. I ended up Selecting everything except the Temp File.xml files, and moving it elsewhere (I actually just put in a new folder in the parent folder).
I then deleted/"Move to Trash"ed the folder that used to contain my Library, and renamed the new folder to have the same name as the old folder.
Then I clicked on the iTunes icon (hold down option/alt from before you click, until the "choose library" dialog appears), and chose my old iTunes Library. This re-linked my old library and restored it to how it was before error (-48) started rearing its ugly head.
(Windows users, when you re-open iTunes to link your library back in... you double click the icon, then immediately press-and-hold "shift" until the dialog appears)

  • Error Message: The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. Unknown Error 13001

    My error message says:
The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An Unknown error occurred (13001).
Ever since I loaded the new 3.0 touch upgrade I have been bombarded by error after error. I have turned off genius which seemed to fix the problem at first but about an hour later the error warning popped up again. I have tried the shift start and selected my library with no improvement. It seems to pop up if I load a new podcast or download something and then fails to download.

Hmmm, that error message came up a lot with older itunes & Genius, like 8.0 version. But you have 8.2.
I don't know why it would crash on a download unless it is maybe a permissions problem. The download starts, but permissions make it so it cannot save it at the very end? Make sure you have ownership and full control over your itunes folder and all its subfolders.
How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista
And since you've turned off Genius, try deleting these 2 files
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
Restart itunes and see if there is any difference....good luck!

I've made some progress. In iTunes preferences/advanced you can re-set warnings. Repairing Disk Permissions on your boot drive will help when iTunes won't start. In addition to the saving issue, I've suffered through the problem of iTunes creating multiple .tmp files. With iTunes closed you can delete these files.
I also found these two threads helpful and have turned off local snapshots for Time Machine.

I have restored Lion once and it was easy. No disc required as Lion creates a recovery file on your computer, Instructions are here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mchlp1599.html
    Hope this helps.

  • Error: itunes library file cannot be saved. you do not have enough...

Last night this started popping up "itunes library file cannot be saved. you do not have enough access priviledges for this operation.". Nothing in my system or in itunes has changed. Anyone know what would cause this? Is it safe to import music into itunes at the moment? Will things not be saved to the library?

Still not the problem. Tracks are imported by itunes. Tracks are save to HD. Tracks show up in itues library. Close itunes... tracks still on HD, but not in library. No security changes have been made. This is a 500GB HD that is over half full music , all in my itunes library, and now for some reason itunes cannot associate with these new files. No updates have happened, I've rolled back to a system point predating my problem, problem still there.

  • Error message 13026 the itunes library file cannot be saved? and damaged fi

this just started to happen today--i tried to open ituens and then it said that the library was a damaged file and i basically had to re-upload all of my songs, vids, etc over again. Now when I try to organize my library an error message: 13026 comes up that in essence says that the itunes library file cannot be saved an unknown error has occured. When i did upload the library again, half of the album art never appeared.
My questions are has anyone else experience this? How should I fix this? Should I uninstall and reinstall itunes completely?

Hi there - I am having similar problems, I keep on getting damaged library file error messages, which means I have to reimport my entire music collection files again after deleting the damaged library files. Obviously I lose my playlists every time. I've also had to uninstall and reinstall Itunes several times. I have checked permissions on my iTunes folder as well as the Itunes Library Genius file as above and have 3 types with full control: Fiona PC, Fiona PC administrator and System. I can't seem to change individual permission types away from everything being allowed. Is this part of the problem? would appreciate any help, thanks Fiona.

  • Error -54 after upgrading itunes - library file cannot be saved

after uploading newest itunes software, i got error -54  that the itunes library file cannot be saved. an unknown error occurred. why should i care adn what should i do?

I just called Apple Support and I think they helped me, but I'm still waiting to see if the error message returns. I was experiencing the same problem. Whenever I started iTunes, I would get the -48 error message. Everything else was working fine. Apple Support instructed me to delete some files from a folder and restart my pc. I did this and it seems to have worked. The folder is on my C:/ drive. Using Windows Explorer, I went to my C:/ drive and then opened the following folders in this order: "Documents and Settings", "Administrator", "Application Data", "Apple Computer", "iTunes", "iPod Software Updates". Inside the iPod Software Updates folder, I found four files which I deleted. I then emptied my trash can and restarted my pc. After I restarted my pc and opened iTunes, the error message did not come up. So it looks like my problem has been solved. Just some minor glitch having to do with the last update. I should mention that I did just get an iPod Classic 80 gig which replaced my 30 gig iPod Photo which just died.

  • Anyone know about this? "The iTunes Lirbrary file cannot be saved. -54 error message

I lost a drive, but had a back-up, so I started with the new drive, formatted Mac Journaled, copied the songs and iTunes Library over and got everything working (I think). Now I'm getting this message and I'm not sure what to do: The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. Unknown error occurrec (-54). Anyone???
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello, Randy.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This sounds like a permission issue with your iTunes Library folder.  Here are a couple articles that will help you troubleshoot this issue.

  • Trying to back up iPad to external hard drive, "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."

This issue is somewhat complex so I will try to explain it as clearly as I can. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
It all began when I kept getting popups from my iPad saying that I had not backed up since May. I realized that was pretty dangerous so I decided to finally try syncing it to iTunes, though I had avoided doing so for so long because I knew that when I tried there was no room on the computer. I then remembered that I have an external hard drive with plenty of storage space, so I got that out and set it up with a folder to move iTunes and the backup into.
On iTunes I went to the Advanced Preferences and changed iTunes Media Folder Location to the G: folder, with the keep organized box checked. I also copied the previous backups from the original C: drive to G: so that I could delete the ones on C:.
I used Junction Link Magic to link my now empty MobileSync backup on C: to a new (JLM would not work unless it was empty) backup folder on external hard drive G:.
I plugged in my iPad to iTunes to sync it, and while it was backing up I checked the new folder on G: to make sure that the backup was being put there. It was.
However, about halfway through I got the message "iTunes library file cannot be saved. The disk you are attempting to use is full."
My question is Why? If it is being made in a 1.5 terabyte hard drive now, and not the computer, why is there no disk space? My guess is that it must still somehow be saving to the computer. But how? And how can I get it to save solely on the G: drive where there is enough room?
I am running Windows XP and the latest version of iTunes.
An additional but not as crucial issue:
Much of my music has been lost, with the being displayed next to the songs in the iTunes library, and only 50 (purchased) songs remain on my iPad. This was because those missing songs were stored on a different external hard drive ( I:). However, I copied many of the music folders on I: over to G: so that everything could be together. I am wondering if it is possible for me to get these songs back onto my iPad. But this is not my most important issue right now, because I believe that once I get the first issue solved I can simply plug in I: and G: at the same time while syncing the iPad, and get the songs back.
Note: I have come to realize the iTunes program itself is still under Program Files in the C: drive. Does this have to do with anything?

Short term, free up some disk space. Long term, move the library to a bigger drive.

  • ITunes Library File Cannot be Saved. The Disk Cannot be Read From . . .

I use a MacBook Pro with a healthy battery. My iTunes songs are on a USB drive. The Database and XML files are on my MacBook. Power went out in my house and the USB drive shut off. The MacBook stayed up and running. Power came back, powered on the USB drive, open iTunes, and bang: This sorry error: iTunes Library File Cannot be Saved. The Disk Cannot be Read From or Written to.
The disks are healthy, did an fsck and ran disk verify/repair. No problems. Restart iTunes, same error. Obviously a corrupted Databse file. This wouldn't be a big deal if only the XML info would be useful and actually restore critical info such as play count and dates which is essential for the Not-So-Smart Playlist dependencies to work.
This is the third time I've been burned with corrupted iTunes "Database" files. I use "Database" in quotes because a true Database wouldn't crap out like this. It would be recoverable. It would understand a simple SQL "Where" statement. It would have a maintenance script and some means for recoverable backup beyond the lame process of copying the XML file. Or it would at least read in the info the XML file.
I am becoming disillusioned with iTunes and I'm beginning to yearn for my old Linux box running GTKPod which never failed me....

OK, here's an update - After doing the restore as mentioned having everything seemingly work, I erroniously downloaded the iTunes 7.4 & 7.4.1 updates. Now, about 80% of library is non-responsive, ie: shows up in iTunes, but clicking to play does nothing at all. the other 20% of my library plays, but it's not the song it is supposed to be playing. For example, clicking on a song from say, ABBA prodes a wonderful Gorillaz track :-/ (The same Gorillaz track which will not play if I select it...)
I reiterate: WE NEED A MEANS TO BACKUP OUR LIBRARIES RELIABLY!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi pholewinski!
I have a couple of articles for you here that I believe will help you with this issue. The first is an article on advanced troubleshooting, and it can be found here:
    iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3297
If following that article's steps doesn't take care of the issue, you can try the things listed in this article, which is about permissions issues in iTunes:
