I get the wheel of doom when I open Mail, after having installed Mountain Lion.

Ever since I uploaded Mountain Lion, my Mail wont work. I just get the spinning wheel! Any suggestions?

Quit Mail.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Delete the selected file. Relaunch Mail and test. It should re-index your mailboxes.

  • Why after having installed mountain lion in hard disk using a MBP 17"mid 2010,isn't possible to install native original snow leopard in other hard disks using the same MBP?

Seems something is changed in the firmware that doesn't allow more to install snow leopard. Someone can help me?

In general, a 2010 model Mac should be able to re-install Snow Leopard.  It would require a complete backup, a complete wipe, then install of Snow Leopard. Then be careful not to restore OS X Mt. Lion files over SL, when restoring your data files and applications.
What is the Mac Model Identifier in About This Mac/More Info/Hardware Overview?
Are you using the Restore disc that came with that model Mac?  If not, you may need to purchase a retail Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD 10.6.3 from Apple for $19.95.

Your Mac must be one of the following models:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

I get the spinning beach ball when I open preview, it wont go away, can i somehow stop the process its trying to do?

You can quit Preview by selecting it in Activity Monitor and then clicking on the red octagon 'Quit Process'.  That does not solve the issue of the beach ball' as such.  Perhaps. a reinstall of the OS might sole the problem.  That is simply a guess on my part.
    Ciao.

In System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options (below the list) > click the padlock and authenticate > Uncheck Show fast user switching menu as:  or you can change it to icon.

  • Can't get beyond the spinning beach ball when I open mail

I am running 10.3.9 and when I launch Mail, it opens about a dozen different mail messages and the beach ball starts spinning. After a few force quits and disk utility repair permissions, I am stuck. Please help!
    Thanks!

Try launching Mail holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
If the problem persists, you’ll have to re-create the preferences file:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem). If you have a backup of your data that includes a working copy of this file, you may try restoring it from the backup to avoid the remaining steps.
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
    5. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    6. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    7. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • When I open a new program in mountain lion it is not visible in the dock, nor can I select it with cmd-tab.

Any ideas? I'm on a MacBook Air.

I have the same problem as m.proudfoot. Defintiely a bug with the Dock. In addition, when I minimized applications, despite having the preference to minimize windows into the application icon, they would also start minimizing as windows to the right of the dock. I was able to fix it temporarily by restarting the dock. Go to the Terminal Application (in Utilities) and type the following: killall -KILL Dock
That will restart the dock and for me it worked, where all of a sudden three running applications appeared and the CMD + TAB starting working again. Give it a try to see if it helps at least until there is a 10.8.1.
As for what causes it, that I haven't figured out yet, but I have had it occur on 2 different machines, a MacMini and MacBook, both with Mountain Lion. So sure seems like a bug.

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Error message when saving a jpeg after updating to Mountain Lion

I've just updated to Mac Mountian Lion and I'm getting an error message when I go to save a jpeg in Fireworks CS6.  I've attached a screenshot but the message says "Could not save the file.  The file could not be found".  But it actually does save the file.  This is very irritating and wondered if anyone else had come across this or found a solution.  I believe I'm up to date on all my FW updates.  I notice that this seems to do it when I use image preview to save.  Thanks for any help!

I believe this issue was recently discussed in the following thread:

  • Why is Skype freezing everytime I try to open it after upgrading to Mountain Lion? Will it help if I delete and download it again? Are others having the same/similar problem?

Skype was working fine with the OS X Lion but ever since I upgraded, it has constantly been freezing. I've decided to drag it to trash and download the .dmg file from the Skype website once again. Are others facing the same problem?
Also, what are the associated files I should delete from the Library (Preferences, Caches etc) to remove Skype completely?

Well, this problem is fixed. I deleted all the files associated with Skype from the Library. Reinstalled it and the main thing, unlinked Skype from Facebook. Now it works fine!
