I give up on my N78-3

I've had the N78 for 8 weeks now and I've just sent it in to Nokia for repairs. I'm fully aware that my N78 really just needs a firmware update but I've run out of ideas. Nokia Customer Care acknowledges there are problems but no one knows if or when an update for the USA version (N78-3) will come (the European version has already had two updates).
My reasoning is that my phone is basically broken in this condition and there's no other way left I can get Nokia's attention. Hey maybe they'll send me one with a newer firmware somehow, or maybe they'll send me one without the scuff mark I put on it. What do I have to lose but $4 postage? I figure there's some mechanism that gets word back to the software group when too many returns come in with no hardware problems. Maybe I do have hardware problems, who knows.
I do know that the minute I put my sim into my old 6120 Classic my email works, my bluetooth works, my phone won't reboot, and the web browser won't crash. When my N78 can do that I'll call it fixed.
Oh and I'll be updating my review on Amazon to reflect this.
See here for a list of N78-3 Bugs found to date:

Sorry to hear that. I understand your frustration and I hope they send back a better working N78-3.
Myself, I count myself lucky. Everything works perfectly for me right now...email, bluetooth, maps, gps, 3rd party apps, battery life, 3G, wifi, etc. etc.
The only issue I've been having is the dreaded reboots but I believe that may have to do with 3rd party apps. I recently uninstalled Google Search app from my N78 and since then it hasn't rebooted or shown any issues. This seems odd at first but makes sense if you think about the fact that the Google Search app loads itself into memory and runs in the background at all times.
I did this this past Tuesday night and so far no reboots, crashes or any problems. I'm sure I just jinxed myself but I've been using it heavily over the last few days with no issues. Prior to this, it would usually reboot every 2 days. If it doesn't reboot for another few days I'll be happy.
I would normally not stand for this but I just love the phone and if I got something else it'd probably be the iPhone 3G which has perhaps more software bugs and issues than the N78-3!!
Best of luck. Here's hoping they release an update soon.

  • N78 with some problems...

    Hi everyone!
My n78 recently started to give me some problems. First was (and is...) the speaker when you'r making a call and want to hear it lound in that speaker. I press the button to go to speaker and it doesn't change al all!! And yesterday, it got bored or something and decided not to get any signal from any operator... And I have the latest upgrade.  So, any idea or I can just go to the store and change the phone ??
    Regards

Actually, this is a common problem with all N78's (having one myself and tracking all the bugs and fixes since 12.046), documented here in the thread I started: /discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=50372&query.id=986276#M50372
seems like you had the loudspeaker bug from the earlier firmware (12.046), and when you updated to 20.149/21.002 you did not perform a hard reset after the firmware upgrade. you will need to perform the four-finger hard reset. the soft reset that Korngear details won't do much help, you will need to do the hard reset. this is done with the phone turned off, holding the green call key, 3 key and * key all at the same time. with these keys still held down, press and hold the power button until the Nokia hands logo appears.
this should no doubt fix your issue. let us know how it goes.

  • How do I switch to phone speaker N78

Hello yesterday I bought Nokia N78 but problem is following. I put headphones in Nokia N78 and now I don't know how to switch back to phone speaker. Some1 help! I can't find the answer anywhere.
I'm having headphones picture all the time in right upper corner.

before taking any drastic action like doing hard or soft resets, turn off your phone and take out the battery and leave it out for 10 to 15 minutes, then replace, power on and see if this has helped. if it has not, then try a soft reset, make sure to backup all your data first.

  • Displaying Photos on N78 - Multimedia Menu

    Hi All,
I have a problem in which everytime i take a photo/video and go to view it on the images multimedia menu it displays it as a older photo already stored in my phones memory. It is only when i try to zoom in on the photo is comes up with the right image i have just taken.
Does anyone know where i might be going wrong? This is really bugging me.
Also when i view the new images via the old fashioned file manager it opens them fine.

i came across this bug in the 12.046 firmware also on my N78. you can read the bug list here if you so wish: /discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&thread.id=42047&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
i should mention that there are firmware updates available for the N78, namely 20.149 and 21.002. 21.002 is the latest and v30 is rumoured to come within the next few weeks or so. if it is possible for your product code, please update to the newer version via Nokia Software Updater (using your PC) or via the handset Firmware Over The Air. if your handset does not have any updates stated to be available, i would suggest haggling your operator to see if they will approve/have approved firmware updates.
please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us

  • N78 - N-GAGE 1.40.1557 trouble after software upda...

Everything worked fine with my N78, except minor RealPlayer issues, but after software update 12.046 to 13.056 N-Gage application won't launch games, won't uninstall old n-gage ones, won't install new n-gage trials. The phone's application manager still uninstalls other games (not n-gage) but with everything n-gage related it says "removing failed". The purchased games via GPRS/CSD/WAP Vodafone portal run normally like before. Whenever I launch N-Gage and try to run a game it tells me I need to update it or asks me to uninstall a n-gage game but fails the uninstall with "error -2". I downloaded a n-gage trial game via GPRS/CSD/WAP Vodafone but it failed to install with message "file corrupted" - that never happened before. These "error -2", "error -1" and "error -5" keep popping up with everything n-gage related. Everything else works fine as ever. I did two backups of my personal data after emptying the memory card (music and videos) and checked all backup boxes on Ovi Suite 1.0 and 1.1 on my desktop and laptop machines (one computer has internet, the other doesn't). Then after the software update errors I restored one backup with Ovi Suite 1.1. As it failed to correct n-gage problem I re-updated the software to 13.056 with no luck of change. What should I do to bring back n-gage? Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had enough of Symbian S60 3.2 application manager's faulty behaviour (did not install neither uninstall packages) and decided to try the famous last resort code *#7370#, suggested by user samposuv at Antony Pranata's Forum Nokia Blog (http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/index.php?op=ViewArticle&blogId=34687&articleId=93). It worked nicely as it cleansed the phone to the core. As I had previously backed everything up, it was easy to restore all the purchased items at Vodafone portal. Installed n-gage 1.40.1557 once more, as it had been the root of all trouble, as well as the latest version of NetQin free antivirus. The minor RealPlayer issues still persist but they are manageable (I have to wait about 15 seconds before the 2nd read of a video file in order to watch the pictures or else only audio is heard - happens sometimes, not all the times). In the end only have to account the loss of a n-gage file, acquired by a give-away code by Nokia Publishing, so "no biggy". The Speed Dial was just "off" (oops!). Sorry for mistaking 13.052 for 13.056 - mAbAd! PeeaCe!

  • N78 Pre-Install Dictionary Solution (work database...

    Dear all,
I have been searching for the solution how to restore the pre-installed dictionary for my N78. My MicroSD card occurred ASCII code (special characters)/funny wording after perform restore from my previous backup copy.
It seems that my backup copy is corrupted and I am not able to access to all applications, musics, pictures, and etc that installed in the Memory card (MicroSD card). The last choice is to format my MicroSD card by using my mobile phone (format using computer may have trouble when install certain application, study from the internet format using computer will use different form of format.
After searching through the web and go through a lot of forums and discussion. Finally, I can get it done and back to normal.
    Solution for N78 Pre-Installed Dictionary:
    1) When change new MicroSD card, and open Dictionary, it prompts to install word database.
    2) When download and install dictionary, it prompts to install base package.
    1) Go to http://www.nokia-asia.com/A4429895 (English-Simplified Chinese Dictionary 汉语双向词典), click Download Now.
    2) Follow the instruction
    OR
If above steps cannot work out, try below steps: (Tested on N78)
    1) Go to http://www.nokia-asia.com/A4429895 (English-Simplified Chinese Dictionary 汉语双向词典), click Download Now.
    2) Save the file .zip at Desktop.
    3) Extract the files to Desktop
    4) You will find private -> 101f9cfe after you extracted the files.
    5) Connect you mobile with USB cable, connect as "Mass Storage".
~ Note: It will not allow you to see/create "private" folder when connected as PC SUITE.
    6) Once your mobile connected as "Mass Storage", in Windows Explorer, you can see "private" folder.
    7) Copy private->101f9cfe from destop(Computer) into the private folder(your mobile memory card).
    8) Try to open the Dictionary. It will back to normal.
I believe it also works for other phone model. No harm to try it out.
    Good luck!
    Cheers,
    Vinx

  • N78 USB CONNECTIVITY PROBLEMS

    Hy guys,
Since i've bought my N78 i've been able to connect the phone via cable only one time. After that, every time i've tryed to connect my n78 via cable my computer doesn't recognize my Phone.
When I plug USB cable in one of the USB ports, Windows XP gives me back an error that says "USB devices not recognized - One or more devices connected to the computer has not worked correctly. Windows is not able to recognize it".
I've reinstalled PC suite thousands of times, but nothing changes.
My phone has the 12.046 software version. I know that there'e a newer version but how I can update it if my PC does not recognize the phone, and hence, PC suite is not able to connect to the phone.
    Many thanks for you help
    m

you have another option in updating via Firmware Over The Air. you can do this by entering *#0000# in the standby screen and selecting Options > Check for updates. if an update is not available over NSU, then it may be on FOTA instead for your product code. this method of updating only takes about three to five minutes anyway. remember to do a hard reset (three-finger hard reset) after updating your phone to the new firmware.
so you can probably update from 12.046 to 20.149 or 21.002. USB connectivity problems are probably due to problems with the USB cable or the computer, i have had no problems at all with USB connectivity in all the time i've had my N78, even under 12.046 firmware.
let us know how it goes.

  • N78 software update question?

    Hi guys,
I want to ask you about some misunderstoodment regareding the latest software for this devise. When i go to Nokia and check if there is a new firmware for my N78 by entering product code it says that the firmware version is the same as mu current now (12.046).The thing is that i can see that there is a newer firmware update (20.149) again shown by Nokia in their latest features, applications and improvements page. Why is this occurring?
P.S.I am not experiencing any problems for now with 12.046 and i like to follow the quote  "If it works, don't fix it" and i am hearing that after this update many users find  more new bugs after that but someday Nokia will release a stable firmware which i will gladly install
    Cheers
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

latest firmware version for the N78 is 21.002 not 20.149. there is also a v30 rumoured to be released in the coming weeks. the reason you are getting the message that 12.046 is the latest version for your handset is because your handset is a branded variant (i.e. your network operator has their customisations, logos, wallpapers etc all over it). therefore you may or may not get the 21.002 update for your phone. this is dependent on your operator, as they are provided the newest firmware by Nokia and are given the choice whether or not to customise it to their own tastes, then allow Nokia to release it through either the Nokia Software Updater or FOTA channels. i would suggest haggling your operator to see if they are indeed planning to release 21.002, or have v30 in the works for you. if not, then you will have to give written permission for you to move to generic firmware, after which you can take your phone to your local Nokia Care Centre and they will do this for you.  let us know how it goes.
please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us

  • N78 next firmware?

The current firmware os very buggy, any ideas when the next firmware will be out?

lol well you and i both understand that early firmware is not mature firmware so that would be contributed to the wealth of problems you had with your N78, plus the fact that it was an operator-branded handset (i'm assuming? as you had it on a contract). with all their O2 gunkware and junk all over it that may very well have contributed to the handset's instability. i was lucky in that i managed to buy an unbranded handset off eBay that was originally purchased from Vodafone. though Vodafone did not put their custom firmware on it and sold it unbranded (something which is easily confirmed by reading their catalogues and seeing the handsets that don't have Vodafone Live! next to their name means they are unbranded and vanilla). i personally have never had any major problems with my N78. i always go unbranded
not sure about n82 cos i have never used one, but i have heard it is pretty good, and so is N95, although i have only used N95 8gb and the N93i once and both were running early firmware versions so were sluggish so i wrote them off as being sucky . i must admit N78 is my first S60 phone i've owned though.
and yes, you should change your signature to reflect the phone you have now . my last few phones have all been Nokias and its the only way to go

  • Pc suite always looses conection with cable N78

when i try to send applications to my n78 via the data cable it gives a error message lost connection with phone it will work fine to update software or use in data mode so its not the cable. its the latest pc suite im useing.
I can send applications via bluetooth no problems, has any one got any ideas? i have even tried a different cable.
    Solved!

I have alredy got that version, I have 2 genuine nokia data cables the one that came with the phone and the one I got with my 6500 slide neither with transfer applications but will do all the other jobs, but the cheap chinese copy works fine. This does not inspire me to buy genuine spares if they are not as good as the copys.

You will just have to clean your internal memory. Just give a try to factory reset by *#7780* as said by previous poster or you would have to soft reset your phone by *#7370*. Maybe some kind of corrupted files are those. Transferring files through bluetooth is always a messy thing!

  • N78 (O2 brand) Firmware Update

I need to update the firmware on my N78 which at present claims to have version 11.043. NSU informs me that this is the latest version and therefore does not offer me the option to update. O2 tell me that the latest version authorised by them is 20.149. I have just spoken to a gentleman at Nokia Care Centre who tells me that although my phone states it has 11.043, this is just a glitch and it does in fact have 20.149. THIS SOUNDS LIKE BS. Can anyone confirm this information. If it is indeed false, how can I update?

Please read this informative article written by one of our senior users Grschinon, which will explain the non-availability of firmware updates for your N78. I have an unbranded N78 and am running v30.011 myself: http://linux.sgms-centre.com/nokiafaq/branded-phones/
Also read the articles on this blog for further clarification on firmware updates: http://techyoddsandends.blogspot.com
For your information also, 30.014 is basically the same as 30.011, except it is only available for a few select product codes (namely Persia, some of Africa).
