I got a email from "find my iphone" saying my iphone was erased...and it was! how did that happen?

I got an emai from "find my iphone" saying my phone was erased.. and it was!  Why did this happen?

One - you may have said to disable/erase the iPhone while communicating with the iCloud Find My iPhone site.
Two - the finder/thief may have reset the iPhone to factory settings, simple enough to do, and yielded the iPhone untrackable.
