I got a message that I should download an upgrade to Firefox 3.6.16. So I hit the download button and it said "Downloading the update" and "Connecting to the udate server". And it gets stuck there. How can I get past it?

I have an iMac OS 10.4. I downloaded Firefox a while ago and I had no real problems with it. Then I got this message that I should update Firefox to 3.6.16. So I hit the "Download" button and I get the "Software Update" which says "Downloading the update" with a progress bar and below it , it says "Connecting to the download server". But it gets stuck there. The progress bar has gone to the end of bar. How can I get hooked up to the Update server?

That is because that Firefox 3.6.x version has been released later than the Firefox 4 version.
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

* Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
* Install the new version that you have downloaded

Reboot the machine holding Command and r keys down, you'll boot into Lion Recovery Partition
In there will be Disk Utility, use that to select your Lion OS X Partition and Repair Permissions.
After that is done reboot the machine and see if you can log in.
If not repeat the above steps to get into Lion Recovery, get online and reinstall Lion again, it will overwrite the installed version and hopefully after that it wil work.
Reboot and try again.
If not follow my steps to create a Snow Leopard Data Recovery drive, then option boot from it and grab a copy of your files off the machine.
Then reinstall all your programs onto the external drive like setting up a new machine, then use Disk Utility to erase the entire internal boot drive (select the drive media on the far left, not the partiton slightly indented) format Option: GUID , 1 partition OS X Extended and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external to the newly formatted internal drive. Once that is finished reboot and disconnect the external drive.
Once you go that, boot into Snow Leopard and update to 10.6.8, use the AppStore and option click on Purchases and download Lion again and install.
Lots of work, but there is no Lion disks.

That didnt happen before until I made an upgrade to 7.0.1

AddThis - I get "unauthoriozed to access service" b/c I accidentially hit a lockout button and I cannot figure out how to get back my site authorization for this computer.

I am certain I accidentally hit a button that said something about restricting access. It happened fast. I now cannot send email from sites or use AddThis to send things to others. I am not a sophisticated user but have gone through the Privacy and Security settings on Mozilla and can't find where I can restrict or unrestrict my access to this feature. Photo Stream is not a respository for archiving photos. It is a cloud storage device that will store the last month or last 1000 photos taken by any device on the same Apple ID, and then will "share" those photos with all other devices that have Photo Stream turned on,and that are logged onto the same Apple ID.
iCloud backups will contain all of the photos that were on your camera roll the last time you backed up your device.
If you have photos outside of the Photo Stream parameters, and they are not all on your current camera roll, then you have no way to retrieve them unless you have imported them to the computer you sync with or have uploaded them to some other cloud service like DropBox.

Do you still see these images in the Downloads Manager (Show All Downloads)?
If they still show there then you can right-click such an image and use "Open Containing Folder" to go to that folder.
If the file is no longer there then it has been (re)moved.
If you know the name of the files then you can try a search and possibly also look in the temp folder.

When I close Firefox it often disconnects my broadband link (the broadband reconnects itself in a few seconds) how can I fix this?

If you did that could explain the multiple tabs being opened. What may have happened is you have the mailto protocol set to open Firefox which results in 100s of tabs opening when you click on an email address. My guess is you will find mailto is set to "Use Firefox".
