To circumvent a forgotten passcode you would need to restore the iPhone to factory settings. This will remove the software and data/content from your iPhone as well.
To put your iPod/iPhone into recovery mode:
1. Make sure the iPod/iPhone is connected to a computer with iTunes installed on it.
2. Hold down the sleep/wake button(top button) and the home button at the same time until the iPod/iPhone screen goes black then shows the apple logo(usually 10-15 seconds).
3. Once the apple logo appears on the screen, let go of the sleep/wake button and keep holding the home button.
4. The ipod/iphone screen should show an itunes logo and usb cable if you were successful. A dialog box will appear in iTunes that states an iPod/iPhone in recovery mode has been detected if you are successful.
5. Click ok, then click the Restore button
After that you should be up and running in no time!

Call AT&T and see if you qualify for an unlock. If you do not, maybe you can get your friend to contact them and request an unlock, if he was a customer. Only the carrier the device is locked to can authorize an unlock.

You need to get the password for the iCloud account from your friend, or better yet ask your friend to do an erase all content and settings on the iPhone or restore the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone.

I see the update for the iPhone came out. I just purchased a new iPhone for a good friend and would like to give it to him with as little to do as possible. he will probably not keep up on things but that is his nature.
About this update, I think I hear it is a security patch. How do the iPhones get their downloads? Does it just hapen when the machine is turned on?
Also, he wanted one that had a chip or something inside that would act like a mini modem so that he could use that to access the web with his new MacBook pro. I am not sure if he explained it right because I was not there, but the people at ATT told him that service should be available any day now.
Anybody know if this is even something that is in the works for iPhone users?

Yes I think that is it. I have a usb modem hanging out of a usb port on my MBP and h aid he doesn't need that because ATT told him the chip in the iPhone will act like a modem and he will be able to have internet connection via his iPhone on his new MBP.
It's the same concept as your USB dongle. ATT hasn't released it yet and they haven't announced pricing plans either.
Would you suggest he install this latest download? I heard it was a security patch to deal with some flaws in the google program the iPhone has used so it sounds pretty major. if he does not have his ITunes set-up yet with an account and credit card, do you know if I should check and ,download it and install it before i give it to him. he was concerned about being able to get it and I thought maybe they would download it to all iPhone automatically but that shows you how much I know.
The security update was to plug an SMS vulnerability that was discovered in the last week or so. It has nothing to do with Google. Apple doesn't do automatic installs. It's always up to the user to initiate the process.
He should set up his own iTunes account on his own machine. Once he has an account, he can sync his contact list/calendars/music from his machine to the phone. Prior to any update install, the iPhone will do a backup prior to installation.

If you already set a password for your voice mailbox, you would need to input it in order to access your voice messages associated with your cell-phone plan. And I can leave it charging all night long and it never reaches 100% battery life. I can leave it uncharged and when I go to sleep it'll be at 75% battery life, and when I wake up (no apps have been left open, wifi and airplane mode are off) I'll be at 20%. I haven't even had this phone 2 weeks! This is a nightmare, I can't do anything on my phone that won't drain the battery life to almost dead. I've taken to bringing my charger with me everywhere I go, but I refuse to believe that this is normal. I bought my first iPhone brand new from the verizon store and NEVER had an issue with battery life. I could go days without plugging it in, and I would say my usage was pretty high. If the insurance company gives me a faulty phone, do I have to pay to get a new phone sent to me? HELP!

How are you charging the device? Is it plugged into a wall outlet or a usb drive? Let's start by resetting your device. This reset will not lose any data. This will stop any applications that are stuck or running in the background. Try the reset then attempt to charge the device with a wall outlet for 3 hours. Does it fully charge now? If so how's the battery life?

Probably best to restore to new, but may be worth checking with your friend if it is locked to a carrier. If you restore it and it is locked you will only be able to use a sim from that carrier.

You can call AT&T. If the phone is out of contract they may unlock it for you. Other than that, you won't have much help here as we cannot discuss unauthorized means to unlock the phone.
