I got lucky, but my 5th Gen works now!

Like everyone else, I did the 9.whatever update and haven't been able to use my ipod since. Itunes still worked, would download my podcasts and let me import from cds (was afraid to buy anything else from the store), and would play the downloads, but would not sync my pod. Not only would it not synch, but it erased my podcast playlists and some of my lectures from my ipod. I never lost my screen or anything like that.
Anyway, after MONTHS of reading what you guys have tried to do for a fix, but being afraid to try, I finally decided it was do or die. I'm running Vista on a PC. First I backed up my library file to an external HD (though I didn't need to since it was still in my documents file).
Then I uninstalled iTunes exactly the way Apple recommends. I tried reinstalling with version 8.0, but got the message that the library.itl file couldn't be accessed because it had been created with a newer version of iTunes. Having no idea what this was or what it meant, I kept looking around the internet and found a fix that worked for me.
I went to documents/music/itunes/itunes music/music and found my library.itl file. I renamed it library.itl.old. Then I went into the Previous itunes Library folder and took the newest file and copied it back to the iTunes folder. I then renamed it library.itl.
Then I reinstalled with itunes 8.0, which installed beautifully. My library was all there. I went ahead and consolidated the library. When I reconnected my iPod (using my ORIGINAL iPod cord, NOT an iPhone cord, thank-you very much!), I was told that the iPod was carrying another itunes library and did I want to sync since it would erase and sync. Do or Die! I said 'yes' and although the library is a bit jumbled, everything is there, my iPod now syncs my music and new podcasts and all playlists are on my iPod.
While I will defend Apple as a private business against any and all potential government intrusion, I hope my iPod holds out for a really long time, because Apple doesn't seem to give a fig about any of the iPod owners who have been made to spend hour-upon-hour trying to get their little bricks to work. It's not fair to any of us. We're a true-blue lot and they count on that. When I got my iPod working I literally sobbed - I had no idea how much I missed using it. Apple is this mega multi-billion dollar company and they tell us to get new iPods - their treatment of this issue is downright despicable and they don't deserve us as patrons.
Like I said, I got LUCKY with this fix because I don't have much of a clue when it comes to tweaking anything to do with computers. I sure hope this helps somebody out there!

I hope it turns out for me. When my crashed the last day on vacation, I about started crying. It's still messed up and I'm trying to work on it. It's only been like this for like 3 days but I'm really starting to miss mine.

Yes, your battery is likely toast and in need of replacement.  Not much else for troubleshooting here.  Sorry.

I was in Aussie last month and dropped my iPod Touch (4th Gen) on the road. The screen was cracked on the top left-hand corner (where the wireless area is). The screen got fixed but the wireless stopped working. So I am wireless-less... I bought it last July and its still under warranty, but can I still claim a repair on it?

No because it was physical damage

  • How do I make WinIdows 8, New Itunes, and Nano 5th gen work together

iI am downloading library books,  WMA  to Overdrive, then transferring to iTunes/iPod Nano 5th gen.     Problem came when I got a new laptop w/ Windows 8 and installed the Overdrive & iTunes.     Overdrive now tries to transfer directly to my Apple Device ( the Nano 5th) and totally ignores Tunes.   If I look at
Windows Explorer, the book shows on the Nano  BUT when I try to see it on my Nano, it's not there.   Not in Albums, or in Audiobooks.   I'm ready to
    scream.    Any ideas?

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the article below. It goes over how to manually manage your content using iTunes 11.

  • Made HDD, Battery and case upgrades to my ipod video 5th Gen and now I am told "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."

I have a 5th Gen iPod Video that I have had many years now.  It has worked faithfully until about 2 weeks ago and the HDD totally died on me.
So I decided to upgrade from a 30 to 60 gb HDD, replaced the battery for the appropriate HDD and bought a new back shell for the unit.  I made incremental installations as parts arrived.  First the HDD itself and the next day the battery.  Both went in with no problem and I have been running them in a jerry rigged case (basically the 30gb back case has been taped together to make sure it was going to work OK.  I have been taking it to work with absolutely no issues, great response and great battery life.  Synching is fabulous.
Here is the issue, I hope this makes sense...
Today I received my 60 GB silver back cover and moved all of my parts over.  It seems to fit fine.  Headphone jack is working fine.  However, now the hold button is unresponsive (which is not a big loss to me but still just so you know).  I can play music and I can sync.  However, if I restart the unit, or I try synching a second time, I get screen saying "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."  It does not matter if I snap it shut or leave the case loose, this happens.
I have this error until I open my case up again and do nothing else.  At that time, the error goes away, and my ipod is fine again.  Then, the screen comes back after restarting to a normal boot.  But, if I sync or restart without doing anything else, we go through the motions again until I open the case back up.
I have disconnected the battery as well as the HDD, but still have the problem.  I have also disconnected the cable coming from the hold button/earphone jack to the M/B,
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue or have any suggestions.

Shouldn't you contact the vendor or person who sold the back cover?  At the very least, it has a Hold switch that doesn't work.
This web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
and they call it "Headphone Jack & Hold Switch"
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+5th+Generation+%28Video%29+Headphone+Jack+%26+H old+Switch+Replacement/604
Under Relevant Parts, they seem to list separate parts for the thick and thin back cover.
On a side note, another way to fix your iPod is to use a compact flash card instead of a hard drive.  This web page has details
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Convert-your-5th-Gen-iPod-Video-to-use-Flash-Mem or/
Then, you can use your existing thin profile back cover that works.  I replaced the hard drive in my 4th gen iPod with a CF card.  Currently, it is only 8GB, but with lower prices these days, I may soon upgrade it with a 64GB CF card.  But it works great with the 8GB card.  The iPod is noticeably lighter.  There is no hard drive spin-up delay.  The battery lasts longer per charge.  And it is no doubt more shock-resistant.

    Hi!
It seems that in the upgrading process part of your data was lost. Take a look to this article to find out how to recover it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile?s=profile&r=3&e=es&as=s#w_passwords

  • Does the Ipod nano 5th gen. work with the built in microphone on Skullcandy  headphones?

I want to buy a pair of Skullcandys with a microphone in them, but it wouldnt make sense to pay the extra money for a microphone if my iPod wont work with it. Has anyone ever tried it or know if the headphones would be compatible with the iPod

I would check with Skullcandy's support site. They should be able to provide the most accurate answer.

  • Just got my IPOD 30 5th Gen Problem with adds to IPOD

When I add music CD to IPOD I get duplicate names..ie. Queen (2 disc set) add disc 1 ok then disc 2 but in iTUNES it shows duplicate song titles under Queen.. when u play each they are diff songs?
Also I get the question mark in the far left column.. when u click it to play nothing happens..If I add the song a second time the question mark is gone and song plays?
    Can someone assist...Most appreciated
What is the correct way to add music to IPOD?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you importing the CD through iTunes? Are you letting iTunes name the tracks? Are the duplicates showing up in iTunes too, or just on the iPod. You have to get them into your iTunes library the way you want them or they won't transfer on the iPod the right way.
Which symbol is showing up next to the song in iTunes?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93078
You can add songs to the iPod manually by dragging them or by letting iTunes automatically add them, depending on the preferences you have set.

  • How do I get to the contacts manager on VZW web site? I last used it months ago but it doesn't work now.

A family member has an LG Revere flip phone, and when we need to add several or remove several contacts, it USED to be easier to go into the contacts management page on the VZW web site, but when I went to look tonight, it kept showing the Backup Assistant information for the wrong phone, and ONLY showing me the (nonexistent) contacts for that other phone. The Revere is the only non-smartphone on the account, so it's the only phone I have ever wanted to use the backup assistant and online contacts manager for.
Now that I think of it, tonight it was also asking me to agree to use the Backup Assistant, which I thought was strange because (as I said) we were already using it for that one phone but not the others. But when i agreed it showed me the (default -- generic Verizon) contacts for MY phone, not the one I was looking for. When I have tried several different ways to get to the other phone information, I have been seeing more and more website errors.
I guess there was a glitch somewhere... I will try again but I'm putting this out there in case someone has an answer.

I have tried clicking all around and I cannot get to the contact manager at all anymore. Now when I click to it I go to My Verizon Online Sign In - Verizon Wireless (not sure if that link works here) and the web site says:
You are seeing this page for one of the following reasons:
    1) The Sync & Connect feature does not appear on your account. To add this feature click on Home above, then click on the Change Features link.
    2) The Sync & Connect feature has recently been added to your account and the request is in process or pending completion. Please sign in again later.
There's no "Home" or "Change Features" visible on that page. The more I do the stranger the site has gotten. This time it kept telling me I needed to sign back in, but then it would continue acting as normal (I AM signed in).
    I suppose there's a glitch.

  • My IPod is not showing up in my Itunes, I tried my phone as well and it is not coming up either.  I have tried everything including uninstalling and reinstalling.  It worked the other day but it is not working now.  Please somebody help me!!! What to do?

    Hello,
Can someone please help me!?  I am trying to put music on my IPod and it was working the other day.  I can not get itunes to recognize my Ipod.  I have tried to unistall and reinstall Itunes.  I have tried all the steps on the site and can't get it to come up.  I tried my IPhone which was also showing up just the other day and it also is not showing in Itunes!   Please help me.  I need to be able to put music on my IPod for my work.

    I have sorted it myself!!
Ipod is now in the top right corner, last time I clicked on it, it ejected it but by clicking on the actual ipod icon then it brings up your ipod. I restored it to factory settings and synced all my music and it now works again. Hope this can help anyone who ends up with the same problem.

  • I've installed a system update as requested, 10.6.7 but mail is not working now.

I've installed a system update yesterday as requested, all software works fine, except Mail - I get the following message You have mail version 4.5 (1084/1082), it cant be used on Max OSX Version 10.6.7 (Build 10J869).  I've done a complete reinstall of my imac too, but this has not cleared the problem.
    Please help

    Please do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and quit the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Upon satisfactory completion boot from your Snow Leopard DVD and resinstall Snow Leopard. Upon completion you may wish to update it to Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • My iPad air won't charge at all and I don't know if it's the charger or port help!i have had a new port put in before and it worked fine after but it's not working now! I have spent way to much trying to fix this thing one problem after another?

My iPad air won't change at all, and I don't know if it's the port or charger cable it is charging normally but it just won't charge. I have had a new port put in before after a charger getting stuck in there but it worked fine after and now it's not working at all! I don't know if maybe it's the charger getting old but I have spent far too much money on this iPad then I should have as it's one problem after another witch is causing me lots of stress.

Try giving your iPad a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot and try again.
How are you charging it? its's best charged plugged into the wall  not via USB. So if you're trying via USB, try using the supplied power block plugged into the wall.
