If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to try and restore it, it's a very good indication, as mentioned in the article, that the iPod's hard drive is damaged and in need of replacement either by Apple or a third party repair company.

  • Trouble forcing ipod in disk mode

my ipod has a sad icon when i turn it on. according to ipod support, i need to force my ipod into disk mode. when i do so, a folder wit an exclamation point shows up. after that icon comes, i connected my ipod to my computer, because i now have the latest itunes. sometimes the ipod screen says ok to disconnect, so i disconnect it, but when i reconnect, the screen doesnt change and a message from windows pops up saying a new hardware is found but it might be malfunctioned. other times after i connect my ipod after the folder wit the exclamation comes, the screen changes to the do not disconnect screen, and my computer recognizes the new hardware and all of that. then after a few seconds, the screen changes back to the apple logo and the sad icon reappears. can someone please help me out?

    Hi Definit!
If you're having the Sad-faced iPod, or the Exclamation point and folder, you'll need to try a restore on your iPod (first priority, sice a restore usually fixes a folder with "!").
If your iPod isn't recognized by iTunes (in order to restore), then try to put your iPod into Disk Mode again (reset, then immediately begin to press Select (center button) and Play/pause buttons).
Connect your iPod to your computer in disk mode, and attempt to restore it.
If your iPod still isn't recognized by your computer (so you can't restore), or the restore didn't help, then try readging through Mitch's post here -> Mitch - Exclamation point and folder!

  • IPod appears in Finder,  but not in iTunes.  iPod in Disk Mode

I have a 5th Gen, 30G iPod that cut out in mid-song this morning. The hard drive starting making the "tick, tick, tick...pause...tick, tick, tick" sound. I reset it and it does not show any of the music on it (only pictures). When I plugged it into the computer, it appears on the desktop (eventually) and in Finder, but not in the iTunes Source List.
After working my way through the first 4 of the 5 R's, I have come to Restore. Since I couldn't get the iPod to appear in the Source Menu, I haven't been able to hit the Restore button in iTunes. So I have placed the iPod into Disk Mode, and reattached it to the computer. Still nothing, just it icon on the destop, but nothing in iTunes.
I assume that the Data is Corrupt on the Hard Drive of the iPod, but how can you restore an iPod if you can't get iTunes to recognize it?!
    Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

    Hey there,
Have you had a chance to work through the troubleshooting solutions offered in this Apple support document? If not, it would be a good place to start. Hope it helps.

  • I can't get an ipod in disk mode to mount

Title basically says it all. I put my iPod in disk mode so I can transfer files off my windows onto a iMac running OS 9.2. It connects perfectly to my sister's new macbook but the iPod doesn't show up when I plug it into an OS 9.2.
    It's a 2 gig iPod nano.

To remedy that, you may need to reformat the Nano using OS X's Disk Utility, being sure to select the option to "install OS 9 driver". I hasten to warn you that I have no idea whether or not this is the normal procedure for initializing an iPod (Nano or otherwise), or whether there's any downside to initializing one this way.
That is not the normal procedure for formatting the iPod nano, and doing so will disable its capability to act as a music player until you use the iPod updater to restore it. Using the iPod updater to restore an iPod is the normal procedure, but when done in Mac OS X, it does not install the Mac OS 9 drivers on iPods newer than the third generation full-size models except for the iPod shuffle.
It should also be noted that the option to install Mac OS 9 drivers isn't provided by the Disk Utility on machines which can't boot into Mac OS 9, but is accessible through the diskutil Terminal command. Type 'man diskutil' into the Terminal for information about that command. If further help is needed, post back with the iPod's name and the drive's identifier, which is available by choosing About this Mac from the Apple menu, clicking on More Info, and looking at the iPod's information for text starting with disk followed by a number.

    iPod nano (7th generation)
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.
Reset the device by pressing the Sleep and Home buttons simultaneously until the display turns black. This should take about eight seconds.
When the display turns black, press and hold the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk Mode.
    iPod nano (6th generation)
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.
Reset the device by pressing the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black. This should take about eight seconds.
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk Mode.
iPod devices with a Click Wheel
If necessary, verify that your iPod has a Click Wheel.
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it is charged.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will should say "Do not disconnect".
If you are having difficulty putting your iPod into Disk Mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center. If you are still unable to put your iPod into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
Older iPod models without a Click Wheel
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, then release them. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod, all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost.
When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod should say "Do not disconnect".

Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .

    Hi Napan,
So you don't see your iPod in Windows nor iTunes? You might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #61711, which troubleshoots When Your Windows PC Doesn't Recognize iPod, Knowledge Base Document #301343 on iPod Not Recognized When Connected to Windows Laptop over USB, and "The Five Rs". Let us know if any of the information above works or not.
    I hope that helps,

  • Moving files from USB drive (iPod in disk mode) stops and hangs Finder

I’m having trouble trying to copy a load of music files from my iPod to my new MacBook. The iPod is in disk mode so I’m just using it to move a load of MP3 files from my old PC to my MacBook. They copied from the PC fine and are sat in a fold on the iPod (which I boot into disk mode and connect to my MacBook running Leopard 10.5.5).
The disks mount fine and I can read and playback the files, but when I start to copy them to my MacBook after a minute or too the progress bar stops and it just sits there. I have thousands of file that I need to move and even tried to move say 100 at a time, but after the first few hundred it just stops again.
I have to force quit the finder, but this then hangs the finder unless I disconnect my iPod and then the finder starts back up but warns me that I have removed a driver without first ejecting it.
My iPod is a Video model 5.5 80GB which I connect via USB 2.0 to my MacBook. Anyone got any ideas why copying the files isn’t working?

Thanks for those suggestions. I have tried copying them one by one, but with over 6000 files it’s just not feasible to do this. I don't think adding more memory will help as my MacBook is the new Aluminum model with a 2.0GHz processor and 2GB. I have also tried connecting the same iPod to a Mac Pro with dual 2.8GHz processors, 4GB memory and a set of RAID hard drives and this also has the same problem as my MacBook.
Also, none of the files have any DRM protection.

  • Trouble with restoring Ipod in disk mode

So i have a 30GB Ipod video that i am having trouble restoring.
I have reset it and it goes to the sad face with the exclamation mark.  I have gotten it in diagnostic mode and it looks like everything scans okay.  I then ran it in disk mode and it shows the white page that it needs to be restored.  Then it flashes "okay to disconnect" for a few seconds and the "do not disconnect"
Its hooked up to my laptop and have used mutliple USB ports.  It gets recognized under my devices and has the double chime noise that windows makes.  I right click onto the ipod to troubleshoot but nothing gets detected. The problem is i only have about 1 minute while its it disk mode and it says "do not disconnect" before it restarts.
what can I do (if anything) to make it stay longer in disk mode.  I have itunes open (which I have reinstalled multiple times) but it never pulls up ipod as the source or lets me sync it.
So if i bring it to the genius bar how much to they charge just to look at it.  I wonder if you thinks non repairabe that i should just put that money towards a new one.

After recharging it for at least 2 hours, do the iPod Disk Diagnostics, as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem but helps in troubleshooting.
There are 3rd Party iPod service clinic, that do free evaluation, just google for one in your Area.
