thx. Could u please help me which are the best setting to make under the security in my Imac?
I have a bit of a long list.
Feel free to post back for clarification.
First, and MOST important, make SURE you are NOT in an admin account.
Go to >System Preferences...>Accounts, unlock the lock, click the "+" to make a new account, make it an administrator account, and then take away your own account's admin privileges.
Next (assuming you already have the firewall on, which you stated you did), go to >System Preferences...>Security>Firewall, unlock the lock if necessary, click "Advanced", and check both boxes. Click "OK".
Also make sure that you don't have any applications added to the "Allow" section, unless you NEED them there. (NOTE: The most secure firewall mode is "Allow Only Essential Services".)
Next, staying in the "Security" preference pane, click "General".
Check the boxes: "Disable Automatic Login", "Require Password to Unlock Each Secure System Preference Pane", and "Use Secure Virtual Memory".
Then restart.
Those methods, along with being careful with what you install, and/or give access to your mac, will keep your mac secure from any intruders.
Good luck!

How did you get your songs onto your iPod Touch?
If purchase directly from iTunes you can download them again.
If your iPod is synced to iTunes on a Windows PC, then, sync your iPod to that computer.
If this is your first Mac, are you migrating from a Windows PC?

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • Just Got A New iMac, Can I Get Music Off My iPhone To Put Into iTunes?

I just purchased a new iMac today and I have all my music on my other iMac.
I used to plug my iPod into the new computers I got and copy the songs onto it.
    But my iPod got stolen.
I was wondering if I could do the same thing with my iPhone.
Is there a program that is compatible with the iPhone that allows you to take the music from it and copy it onto a computer?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Two macs? Just connect them together and skip the "middle man".

  • Got a new iMac, best way to transfer files/set up network?

I just got a new iMac. I have a MBP from which I would like to transfer all contents on to the iMac. I do have the MBP backing onto a Time Machine and I'm wondering if that could be used to easily transfer the latest backup version to the new computer? How would I do that and would this transfer ALL of the MBP's content or would I still have to install my programs like iWork from the install disks?
Also, I will be keeping the MBP as a secondary computer, would there be a way to easily connect the two computers so they could synch files wirelessly? I also have one more laptop running Windows7 in the house that I would love to get on the wireless network. Right now we only have it connected to the TimeMachine for internet, but being able to easily share files would be helpful.
    Thanks

You can find the answers to those questions in Mac Help. Mac Help is located in the Help menu of the Finder. If you click Index in the upper right of the Mac Help window you can look up just about any topic for Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
You first question will have answers under Migration and the second under Network. There are answers with step-by-step instructions, not only for Macs but PCs with Windows as well.

That is another problem not related to the Mac OS X version you are trying to use.
Three beeps at startup means you have a bad ram module in the computer.  Did you install the ram or did it come from another owner this way?  The first problem you need to solve is the bad ram.
When the iMac starts, go to the apple left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Memory and see what the report is on the memory...does the iMac report all memory modules that have been installed as OK or does it show bad memory?  If there is not any information, you then need to remove the memory modules and restart one at a time to see which is bad.
On the bottom of the screen there should be a small door that you can remove with a small screw driver.  You need to lay the iMac flat, disconnect the power cord, remove that small door and remove the memory modules.  You can then put two in (if it has four) and see if it starts without the beeps.  Do that with each module so you find out which is bad.  Once you know the bad memory, you can buy a new module, just like the ones installed, so the iMac starts without the beeps.
Next, you cannot use a DVD for another computer for your iMac unless it is from one that is identical to yours.  So, you need to talk to Apple and have them send the DVD for your particular iMac.

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

  • I got a new iMac and my ATV will not recognize my iTunes Library in Homesharing.  My account ID is correct on both devices.

I got a new iMAC for Christmas.  I've turned on Homesharing on it.  It will not appear in my Apple TV list which alsohas homesharing turned on.  I am using the same Apple ID on both devices.  My old windows computer showed up but not the newiMAC even though it syas it is authorized.  Any ideas?

Verify that your iMac is on the same network as the apple TV.  System Preferences > Network > Highlight your connection on the left > IP Address on the right.
On the Apple TV, Settings > General > About > IP address.  They should both something like 192.168.1.xxx  The first 3 nodes the same.  If one is wired and one wireless you may have more than one local network.

It's also possible that the heat damage, if that's what it really is, was caused by overheating while you were using it.
Get iStat Pro widget to monitor the temps and possibly prevent overheating of the new drive. You want to keep the drive temp as close as possible to 45C. 45-50 probably still OK, but constantly or very often above that will shorten the drive life.
    http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/12/hard-drive-temperatures-be-afraid.html
If there was noticeable heat damage to the drive, and it might not have been that, the temps would have had to have been extraordinarily high. Don't know about your model, but the thermal shutdown temp for some older Macs was 85C.

iTunes Store- Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer.http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
Or you can use a third-party utility such as Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac.

  • I've got a new IMAC, but i don't have all my music or movie purchase on it.  I just recently updated iTunes.  How do I get my purchases back?

Ive got a new iMac and now that i updated iTunes I do not have all my music and movie purchases.  How can I get it all back?.  I used to have it before update

It doesn't magically transfer itself, you have to do it.  Purchase may present themselves for re-downloading but things such as CD are only on the old machine or on the CD.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability by country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple recommends,  "... back up your iTunes library. " (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519).
    Additional tip at https://discussions.apple.com/message/24176756#24176756
Select the iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes if you have the sidebar displayed, or with the button at the top right.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.

It reboots it but unplugging can also rectify communication issues like this. A restore would be the next step.

  • My wife and I each have an iTunes account. We just got a new iMac, and we want to merge our accounts into the main machine and use them together on our iPhones and ipad2.

My wife and I each have an itunes account. We just got a new imac, and want to put all of our media on it. Can we share songs and media from two diffrent accounts on the imac, our iphones, and the ipad2?

Decide which device will be changing accounts.  On that device, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll that you want to keep on the device, save them to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iDevice.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to delete any data that you don't want in each account (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa) you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete it.
