I got the message "4403D" when I tried to startup while pressing "Option D" keys while starting up. What does this mean?

I have a Macbook purchased in 2009. I am running Mavericks, which has caused several programs to stop opening (Calendar, Quicktime...) so I have been trying several things to fix it. One thing is to try to do a Apple Hardware Test over the internet. In order to do this I need to restart my computer while pressing the option and D keys.
When I did so I got the message "4403D". I had to hold the power button down to turn off the computer in order to restart normally so I can use it.
What does this mean? And how do I fix the programs?

Can you provide the link of the website on which you are having problems ??
