I got the whine even when power cord is connected!

This is my third day of using my new Macbook and today I noticed the whine! (I didn't notice it yesterday or the day beofre).
However, I have my Macbook plugged into the powercord at all times and yet I can hear it! And stranger, it seems like it comes from the left side of the touchpad.
That's not really consistent with what other people are reporting, is it?
But it goes away during CPU load and it's quite loud. Easy to hear over the fan noise of my stationary computer sitting under the desk.
Also, the plastic border which runs around the edge of the bottom of the Macbook has a 1mm gap on the left hand side (near the noise). Quite cheaply built, imo.
How do I check which week this unit was produced?
And do you think this is enough to call the Apple store?
I just got it (and actually need it next week on a trip) so I'm not sure I want to send it back right away. Can I wait with reporting this issue, and if so, for how long?

It is the rantings of a few people who are insisting that all MacBook Pro CPU noises are the same across all units. The CPU noise is caused by a vibrating component on the logic board while the CPU cores are cycling on and off under the power management software. This causes a relatively regular frequency so when the component vibrates it can be audible. Because the vibration is coming from one or more components on the logic board, there is no simple answer to how or under what circumstances you will hear the noise.
Many MacBook Pros produce no audible noise at all. Some whine like crazy. The use with a power adapter or battery can affect the noise because it varies with the power management but there is no rule about when it will make noise.
Don't listen to people on these boards who insist that you are either deaf or lying when it comes to if or how your MacBook Pro is making noise. They refuse to listen to many reports that contradict their beliefs. Like you, my MacBook Pro makes a sound only when on AC power (it is faint but audible.) It is perfectly silent when on battery power.

  • MacBook Pro does not go to sleep when power cord is connected

    Hi Experts,
I have recently discovered that my MacBook Pro (2009) with OSX Lion does not go to sleep when the power cord is connected. It does not matter if I close the lid or select sleep from the Apple menu. All that happens is that the screen is powered off, the SIL is solid and I can hear the HDD/fan. I have not changed any of my power settings recently and it has not been a problem previously. If I disconnect the power cord the MB goes to sleep as supposed to (the SIL led starts flashing).
Doing some research I have found other users with somewhat the same issues when VMWare Fusion is installed. I have done some further testing and it seems that if I disable the virtual machine's Network Adapter and quit VMWare Fusion the MB goes into sleeping mode when the lid is closed even with the power cord connected. Enabling the Network Adapter again prevents the MB to go into sleeping mode when the power cord is connected. This even applies when the VMWare application is shutted down.
My guess is that the Network Adapter somehow prevents the MB to go into sleeping mode. The workaround is of course toggling the Network Adapter on and off but the virtual machine has to be running in order to do so. Not being that familiar with network settings on a Mac is there any other way to get around the problem?
    Thanks in advance :-)

    To anyone,
I have turned internet sharing off but the Ethernet box remains checked. If I uncheck the Ethernet box, the Internet Sharing bubble turns red, however when I close System Preferences and re-open, the box is automatically checked although Internet Sharing is off. Because of this my Macbook Pro will not sleep properly.
All other sharing items are turned off. Only Internet Sharing continues to automatically show Ethernet as active from a Wi-Fi connection.
    Any advice?

  • HT1414 I attempted to update my iphone 3 through I tunes - I think I did a back up on my pc - I am now unable to use the phone at all - it cannot be turned off and seems to be syncing all the time, even when it is not connected to itunes.

I attempted to update my iphone 3 using itunes.  I'm not certain but I believe I did a backup on my pc first.  I am now unable to use the phone at all - the slide bar won't move and I have a camera icon next to the slide bar which is not responsive.  I have tried to sync and even left the phone connected to the pc overnight. The phone is going flat within a couple of hours and won't stop beeping every few seconds and seems to be syncing all the time, even when disconnected from pc.  I am fearful that I have lost all my contacts - nothing is working - can anyone help - please?

Try resetting it if you can: hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the off slider that appears first), then release.  If you can't, try to connect it to iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your sync settings and click Restore to restore it.  If that doesn't work you'll have to force it into recovery mode to restore it as outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.
You can check in iTune to see if you have a backup.  They are listed in iTunes>Preferences>Devices.  However, the backup may not bring your contacts back as contacts are only backed up as necessary to preserve the recent call and call favorites lists.

  • Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled. This shows up even when I am not connected to a USB. what do you think the problem is?

Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled. - This is what shows up sometimes even when no USB is connected. What could be the reason?

Try a different USB cord, seen this many many times, its highly likely a damaged USB cord.
Restart the computer to redefine Port definition.  If still a problem

  • How Do I Keep "Find My Mac" Running in the Background Even When My MacPro is Closed?

When I close my Macbook Pro and it goes to sleep it shuts off the "Find my Mac" feature, When I log into my icloud it doesnt find my Macbook. When I open the Macbook it shows up in iCloud again. My biggest fear is that someone could steal my Macbook and I wouldnt be able to locate it because it will be closed and "find my Mac" will be turned off. How do I leave Find my Mac running all the time, even when the lid is closed?
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks.

You don't. Find My Mac works by searching for you mac when it connects to the internet. If the thief never connects to the internet or never opens your mac (you've got to wonder what use it would be to anyone else in either case, to be honest), then you'll never find your mac.
The only way round that would be to install its own GPS locator like some people do in cars. AFAIK, they haven't build one that'll fit inside an MBP body yet...

my traffic conditions dont show up on the notification even when it is turned on - ios 8
I have tried hard resetting. I had a similar problem with the weather but got that resolved now. Any ideas on how to fix?
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem on my iPhone 5s. Traffic conditions are not even a option under edit, but weirdly my wifi iPad Mini Retina shows traffic conditions. I feel like I'm missing some option, but I can't figure out what it could be.

You have a Macbook Pro. A Mac Pro is a desktop. The light on your power cord is orange when it's charging. It turns green once it's fully charged.

Also had beeps, 3 beeps was able to stop doing command/alt...
    What is going on???

3 Beeps on POST usually indicates a memory problem.
You will need to take it in for service, as you can't even so much as re-seat the memory on an Air.

My Pavilion zd 7379ea will only start up in battery mode. AC adapter appears OK with a firm green LED, so external power supply may not be the issue here? When I'm starting up (with what's left on the battery), both the charging LED and the AC LED are constantly blinking. When turned off, the battery LED is firm, and battery appears to be charging (but which obviously is not the case).  Occasionally, when computer is turned off, the AC LED is lit with a firm light.
One odd thing I noted before this happened was that the computer ran on AC only when my HP printer was connected to one of the USB ports (no battery inserted). If I disconnected the printer USB cord, the computer just died immediately; it was like the computer was powered by the printer. Later I also discovered that the same cord (where it connected to the printer) had melted from extreme overheating. I tried to update the USB drivers for each port but it didn't change things. I also tried to connect a different printer to get the computer started but it didn't work this time. I'd be extremely grateful for any comments that may solve this power supply issue (and if possible explain the stuff with the printer connection).

You unplugged a USB device while the notebook was still booted into Windows and on?
Normally that won't cause any issues but , If you did that you may have damaged your  system board's Southport chip.
USB is not a plug n' play port like SATA  and eSATA are.
Here is a link to the maintenence manual for your laptop series.
Is your notebook still within warranty? By the processor components listed in the manual,I believe it is probably not.

  • MacBook shuts off when power cord is disconnected

2007 White MacBook shuts off (not shutdown) when power cord is removed. Battery shows 98% charge. Any ideas? I plug AC power back in and it reboots when start button pushed. This problem just started tonight.
    HELP!

Ronan... in your case, it looks like it's just time for a new battery. Your battery should hold a full charge for up to about 300 cycles. At that point, you should expect a decline in the charge capacity. As your battery has over 600 cycles, it sounds like it's had a good life. As you've had your MacBook for less than two years, it sounds like you are possibly using more cycles than necessary. You should try to use your MacBook while plugged in the majority of the time... but occasionally use it on battery (going through one or two cycles a week). A full cycle is a full charge and discharge. For example, if your battery is at 100% and you let it discharge to 90% and then you charge it back up to 100%, that is 1/10th of a cycle. You would need to do that 10 times to equal one cycle. If you started at 100% and let your battery discharge to 50% and then charged it up to full, that would be 1/2 cycle... doing this twice would equal one cycle. The number of cycles is the primary indicator of the life of your battery. It sounds like you are using your MacBook mostly on battery (with over 600 cycles in less than two years). After you replace your battery, try to run it plugged in for the majority of the time if possible. Many people are mistakenly under the impression that they should fully discharge their battery before charging it. This is not the case with Lithium Ion/Polymer batteries. This was the case with Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (much older rechargeable battery technologies). It seems many people still feel that the memory effect of the older battery technologies applies to newer battery technologies. Just the opposite is true.

    Hello there, sarhang27753.
First thing that would come to mind to resolve the issue would be SMC and PRAM resets. I've linked Knowledge Base articles below:

hie there Actually um trying to update new iOS 7 for my iphone 4 but when i press the button to install new software suddenly it appears why " iOs 7 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the internet " even my phone is already connected to net

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.
Thanks very much for your feedback.
