I guess my Apple TV is BRICKED!

Hey!
Big problem. my apple tv stopped working, with no warning!
When I noticed that, I tried to restore and update it, ever since then it never passes the "Activating" screen.
I tried restoring it numerous times,
every time it finishes restoring and I re-connect the HDMI cable it gives me the sign showing me I should connect the Apple tv to a computer with iTunes.
Then when I re-connect it to the computer nothing's different and I enter a loop.
Thats when I "reset" the apple tv pressing the down and menu buttons, it enters the set-up, and gets stuck on the ACTIVATING "setting date and time" screen for days.
Any ideas?
The thing just stopped working!

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
Check that you have correctly followed the instructions for your model of Apple TV.
If not already, try using a powered USB port.
Repeat the process but this time try connecting the cable while iTunes is closed.
Repeat the process with another cable.
Try restoring the Apple TV on another computer in another location.

  • Apple TV just bricked after update

My Apple TV is bricked and needs to connect to itunes... I don't own a Mac or PC. I do have an iphone 5s and an ipad 2. Can I piggyback my Apple TV onto these devices do I need to go to an apple store?

Here are some steps and notes to try:
MANY people are reporting they've had to try multiple micro USB cables to find one that works. I got one that worked from a neighbor.
For clarification, this needs to be a "micro" USB, not a "mini" USB
Some people have also reported they've had to try the Restore process more than once.
    1. Unplug Apple TV and move it to your computer running latest version of iTunes.
    2. Quit iTunes if running.
    3. Plug micro USB cable to the back of the Apple TV.
    4. Power the Apple TV using  the AC cable.
    5. iTunes shoud either launch itself (a good indication that the micro USB cable you're using is compatible), or launch iTunes.
    6. Click Restore. Software will download and install (big file).

  • Hey Apple! You bricked my locked iPhone

I did the 1.1.1 update and it failed. I keep getting SIM errors even though my phone is locked. If this was just an iPod, it would have been OK, but this is a phone which in my eyes is a necessity. (I know people in 3rd world countries are going to have my *** for that). What can be done to fix it? Can I reinstall the 1.0.2 update? Thanks in advance.

I would not wait for the update. Call Apple or go to one of their stores and get it resolved. I mean you did not try to unlock it..... and you are paying for a service that you are not getting.

  • Umm....I think Apple TV just bricked my iMac :(

I was syncing my Apple TV for the first time to my iMac G5 when all of the sudden the Apple TV froze. I went to check the iMac, and found it to be tuned off. I thought that was pretty weird but just figured something odd had happened. I turned off the Apple TV and unplugged it from the network, then went and turned the iMac back on. It got up to the login window, then promptly turned itself right back off again. I'm starting to get a little worried at this point, so I change the power cord and try again. This time it let me log in, then died when the Finder loaded. I took it out of my surge protector and plugged it directly into a wall outlet. No change. I booted up in single user mode and ran fsck on it - the drive insists it's fine. I unplugged it and left it alone over night. This morning I got about 5 minutes out of it (enough time to get some recent data that I - like an idiot - hadn't backed up yet off) before it shut itself down once more.
So can anyone think of any way, shape or form Apple TV could have just killed my iMac? It's not even possible for it to have interacted with the power system management in OS X is it? If it had just hosed the hard drive inside the iMac why would it turn the power off? I thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas before the inventible visit to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider

It could just be a coincidence. Which model do you have how to identify your iMac? Have you tried resetting the PRAM?
Please post back, depending on your model you might be eligible for either of Apple'sRev A and Rev B repair extension.

  • That Free U2 Album that Apple pushed bricked my iPad

I HIGHLY RESENT the Hubris of Apple for pushing this or any other lousy Music Album to our iDevices. I deleted all purchased songs from my iPad, but the only ones I could not deletion after they auto-downlaoded, we the U2 ones. So i went to 'Settings' and deleted 'MUSIC,' but ONE U2 song is still showing in there. So I rebooted and...it bricked my iPad. Dead in the Water. This, after spending about 2 hours of MY LIFE dealing with something I didn't cause. Guess what Apple - I will not purchase any more Music from iTunes, will forego the iPhone6 I was going to Upgrade to, and I now have NO TRUST in APPLE !!!

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
If by 'bricked my iPad' you mean that it's not turning on then have you tried a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds.

  • New Apple TV Set Up Fail - Bricked? How do I fix this?

I just bought a new Apple TV and am unable to set it up. It automatically displays a screen of an Apple TV with a wire (the Micro USB cord) connected to the iTunes logo. My friend just bought one before me & hers showed no such screen and didn't have a single problem like this when she set up hers. Ours are the same exact model too. I Googled it & read that my Apple TV is "bricked". Apparently that commonly happens when you update your Apple TV to the new software. Except I just bought this Apple TV from the store and am unsure how it is already "bricked". Basically, I am scared that this new Apple TV that I bought is broken and now useless. Has anybody had a similar problem and does someone know how to fix it? Thanks for taking the time to read this & help!

Not really sure how that could have happened, unless it had been a used model or bought through an unauthorized source. Your options would be to grab a micro USB cable (if you happen to have one already) and restore through iTunes or to just take it back and request a replacement.

  • Question for you Apple experts

First let me state that I don't mean this to be a ******** session. I bought my Iphone in December and overall I'm pleased. It doesn't run my life, I use it to make and receive calls and email. With the exception that one day it turned into a brick, 2.0 update, things have worked rather well. What troubles me is that so many people have so many problems. Now I realize that reading this forum is like going into a hospital, everyone is sick. And being tech. challenged I don't know how these things work, but seems to me that a company like Apple being in the business for some years should be able to put out updates that don't cause so many to have such problems. Is it a problem with testing, rushing the product to market to keep ahead of the competition, or are many of these issues the fault of the user?
Or are these machines so complicated that no matter what preparation is undertaken, mass casualties will occur?
    You folks tell me.

I have been an Apple user for many years and in that time I have had a few problems but not too many. This iPhone update is a pretty rare occurrence but sometimes things happen. I used to NEVER update my software until several weeks after an update came out for just this very reason but lost my mind in anticipation of 2.0. I wont be doing that again. I also turn OFF automatic updates for this reason. A mission critical piece of hardware should only be updated when it is absolutely certain it is safe...this includes your phone. I just wish there was an easier way to back up your iPhone like you can your computer. If I run an update to OSX and it hoses my system I just restore it from the backup disk image I created just BEFORE I ran the update. The iPhone won't let you do this and that's bad.
Why did they release 2.0 AND 3G on the same day? If everybody downloaded the 2.0 update several days BEFORE the 3G came out and discovered they could have 90%+ of the functionality and NOT have to buy a new phone, do you think they would have sold over 1 Million units the first weekend? If they released 2.0 a few days after the 3G launch the Apple community WHINE would be overwhelming. So they chose the lesser of the two evils I guess.
Apple is VERY secretive of it's hardware and software and I'm sure they try to test it as best they can but sometimes you can only do what you can do. Out of the millions of Original iPhone users out there, statistically speaking this isn't "too" bad, but I had to exchange my iPhone for another because it was so terrible and you can bet I won't try to update it again until there is a better confirmation on the 2.0.1. I learned my lesson. Apple however very graciously replaced my iPhone and I am happier for it.
And NO, I didn't update it from the rumor sites link. I ran the update from iTunes as any SANE person would. If you downloaded and installed an update from an unofficial link you don't have any right to complain that you screwed your phone.

  • Bricked iPad

I work in a school, and our sysadmin lent me a school iPad over the 2-week break. She told me that I could wipe and sync it with my own Apple ID, and that she'd restore it to school settings after I return it in January.
After I tried that, I got a message to "disable Find My iPad" before restoring, but the password the sysadmin gave me didn't work. But it still let me restore it using Recovery Mode. Now the iPad is asking me to "Activate iPad - This iPad is currently linked to an Apple ID. Sign in with the Apple ID that was used to set up this iPad." The password the sys admin gave me doesn't work! I seem to be locked out of the iPad until I enter the correct password - I'm guessing I have a nice bricked iPad for two weeks.
Short of trying to get hold of the sys admin while she's on vacation, is there anything else I can do to unlock it?

Thanks, but that requires contacting the sys admin. Oh well. If she can't be reached I have a nice doorstop for two weeks.

  • Unable to Sign In to iTunes from apple tv (1st Gen). GRRRRR!!!!

Two days ago I was searching for movies to rent. So I casually went on to the Apple TV to browse all the HD movies. The #1 movie was Iron Man 2 (I watched the preview), #2 was Get Him to The Greek. I decided to opt for the comedy and rented Get Him to The Greek right from my Apple TV. I watched it and all was right with the world.
The next night I decided that I'd rent Iron Man 2 (wife's out of town). So I go into the Apple TV to get it since I knew that it was the #1 top rental the previous night was Iron Man 2. Much to my surprise, Iron Man 2 was nowhere to be found in the iTunes store on the Apple TV. Not further down the top rentals list. Not in the alphabetical listing of all movies, not even in the search. "Well that's bizarre," I said to myself. "I wonder if I can find it in the regular iTunes store on my Mac Pro?" Well sure enough, iRon Man 2 was there. So I rented it on the Mac Pro. Curiously, it didn't show up on my Apple TV. I waited and waited. So I went back to iTunes and, oh silly me, I have to put it there in the iTunes sync dialog and then sync the Apple TV. I did that, and since it was late, I went to bed.
Today, I finally got the kids to bed and cleaned up and decided to watch my rented Iron Man 2. Fire up the Apple TV, see that Iron Man 2 is right there at the front of the listed movies on my Apple TV. Sweet. Select, select play, settle in with a nice drink and ....
Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content.
    What the?!?!
Hrm. That's weird. Well let me double check that I can play Toy Story (a movie I had downloaded and watched with my boy a while back). Yup, Toy Story works all right. So I decided to futz around a bit to see if I could figure out *** is wrong. Over to the settings list, hmm, maybe I should try the "Downloads" option? Click. Okay it says "Check for Downloads." Sure why not. Click. Enter your Apple ID. Yeah okay. Now enter your password. Done. And...
    Unable to Sign In.
The Apple ID you entered couldn't be found or your password was incorrect. Please try again.
What? Oh silly me, I must have made a mistake and entered the wrong email address or password. I'll just do it again, I'm sure it'll work this time. And...
    Unable to Sign In.
The Apple ID you entered couldn't be found or your password was incorrect. Please try again.
Um. Okay, third time's the charm. First let's go into iTunes on my Mac to make sure that I really am entering the right information. Yup, exactly what I thought I entered on the Apple TV. So back to the Apple TV to enter the username (and triple checking it) and the password (carefully inspecting each character as I do it). Still no luck.
Well I guess I'll look up this error online. I found an Apple Support document that indicates there is a problem with aol.com email addresses to log onto iTunes from the Apple TV. That shouldn't be it, I'm using a gmail.com address. Then I found an Apple Discussions link from 2008 where people were flustered by this issue. A few had gotten their Apple TVs to work again by unplugging the Apple TV and deauthorizing and reauthorizing the computer the Apple TV is sync'd to, plugging the apple TV back in and syncing the Apple TV back to the computer.
I gave that the old college try. I came back to try the Apple TV and still got that Iron Man 2 was not authorized on the Apple TV. I thought I'd try Toy Story just to make sure that it still worked. Now that movie said the Apple TV was not authorized to play that movie.
I'm going backwards! Things that were working now aren't and I've spent my entire night trying to figure this crap out. Someone please help me make this "just work" so I don't have to go and smash it to pieces with a baseball bat. My stats as of right now:
    1) I can't log into my iTunes account from anywhere it asks for it on the Apple TV. I've tried settings>downloads, settings>general>itunes store, settings>general>network>test network.
    2) I can't log into my YouTube account. I've triple checked that my information is correct.
    3) I can't play any movies purchased through iTunes even if they were purchased from my Apple TV.
    4) I CAN play music and a music video that I purchased on my Apple TV and music I purchased from my Mac.
    5) I can play a TV season that I purchased some time ago on the Apple TV.
    6) I can log into my account in iTunes from both of my Macs.
Oh also to get the easy questions out of the way: 1) Yes I'm 100% certain that I entered my username and password correctly. 2) I am completely up to date with my iTunes software on the Mac and my Apple TV software (as far as I can tell).
I'm trying to stay calm and keep things light. But holy crap this is frustrating. I spent good money on the movies that I can't watch. I wasted hours and hours of my time troubleshooting and researching only to find myself going backwards and losing the ability to play things that I once had no problems playing. This just isn't working and I wasted my whole night on it. Someone please help!

I cannot help you other than to say I have exactly the same problem and have been trying to resolve it for over an hour now with no luck.
Besides unplugging and replugging in my ATV I have also tried:
    - resetting my password to the same thing
    - resetting my password to something else
    - creating a new Apple ID and trying to use it
    None of this works.
At this point I am guessing that Apple's servers are hosed and the error message is just incorrect. Hopefully they will fix the problem at their end over the weekend.
And yes. Holy crap this is frustrating is putting it mildly.
It amazes me that just a few hours ago I was playing with FaceTime and thinking very positively of Apple, but now I'm just ****** at what is clearly a screw up on their part.

  • Apple tv from two different apple-id`s?

    Hi:)
We`ve just bought apple tv, and the home sharing to our iMac works just fine!:-)
But in our house we have several apple users (me,my husbond and our oldest kid). Using iPhone, iPad, and Macbook Air.
So now i wonder if its possible two connect several apple products with different apple-id to the apple tv?
If not, i hope you can find a solution for this, cause i guess many apple-users think this should be possible.

  • HT204088 I have received an email with a receipt to my iCloud email for a purchase from a apple store in Perth Australia...it does not appear in my purchased list but why did I get the email

I have received a receipt to my email address from an apple store in Perth Australia. No purchase history on my iTunes account but clearly someone else appears to have given my iCloud email...has this happened to anyone before? Should I be worried that someone has access to my account and emails. I sent a query to Apple and received a generic non answer......typical.

The purchase history on your iTunes account will only show purchases from the iTunes stores (iTunes, app store, ibookstore, Mac app store), not from Apple online or bricks-and-mortar stores.
Does anything show on your credit card ? If the email is genuine then it's possible that your and their email addresses are similar and that they gave the wrong id (or the store typed it incorrectly), it doesn't necessarily mean that anybody has access to your account.
For the contact, you will initially just receive an acknowledgement email, the proper reply may take 24 (possibly 48) hours.

  • IPhone 3G update to 3.0 with repeated 1013 errors - now bricked iPhone! ;-(

Attempting to update an iPhone 3G to 3.0 from 2.2.1 and it's now a brick.
Note that I've tried this now from THREE different computers, two macs and one windows box with identical results. I've uninstalled iTunes on the windows box before doing the update attempt.
The error message is "1013" which also takes you to this highly uninformative page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275.
Ok, the USB cables and ports on three computers see the same problem error. So it's either the iPhone itself or iTunes 8.2 (23) or both.
Digging a bit deeper I found that there is a log file kept on the mac. Change to this directory from your home directory "~/Library/Logs/iPhone Updater Logs/" where you'll find one "iPhoneUpdater N.log" file for each attempt to update that you've done.
When the error occurs Apple asks if I want to send the info to them! YES!!! Make sure you do so that they can sort this out.
Ok, looking in this log file (I won't dump it all here) you can see a number of errors. The end of the log file shows:

    2009-06-17 23:39:44.000 iTunes124:20b: iTunes: Restore error 1013
Clearly there are some problems. Earlier in the log file it had problems updating a number of files.
Now I've tried this "Connect your iPhone to the computer. press and hold sleep and home, and as soon screen goes blank, count off 5 seconds, then let go of sleep and keep holding home." That didn't change anything. sigh.
It's almost as if this particular version of the iPhone that I have is incompatible with the current iPhone 3.0 operating system components. Maybe there is a bad driver? Hmmm....
Ok, here is another error in the log file.

So clearly the file "/usr/local/standalone/firmware/ICE2_04.26.08.fls" isn't transferred properly! Something is amiss somewhere...
Could it really be that it can't download the update file to the iPhone due to USB problems? Surely Apple has access to fault tolerant file transfer protocols they can use?
Sigh... now I'm without my primary phone... grrrr... arrrrg... should have waited....
Apple maybe you could learn something about "ACID TRANSACTIONS" and include them into the update process to guarantee either 100% success or 100% abort rollback?
I don't know if this is relevant but now in iTunes on the iPhone page it no longer shows any values at all for the "name, capacity, software version or serial number" fields which is kind of spooky. Does this mean that I need to take the phone in for service? Is it permanently toast?

Just visitied the Apple Store in Vancouver and wasn't allowed in! They had a wall of orange shirts AND two mall SECURITY guards preventing people from entering UNLESS you were there to purchase a new iPhone 3GS!
The orange shirt gave me grief refusing to allow me to see a service person! So I asked to speak to his manager. Matt showed up and read me the same riot act of BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! They claimed it was the first day since they opened that they closed their Genius Bar!
The fact remains that it was APPLE's Update that bricked my iPhone that I depend upon.
So the manager went off to get his boss when I asked him too. I think he was just glad to get away from a rational insistent customer spoiling their wonderful happy Apple day selling new phones.
So a non-technician showed up and offered to take my phone into the store and try to update it. She lied. She returned to tell me that my warranty was expired due to the "water litmus" paper being RED. ***? You've got to be kidding! I've NEVER had it anywhere near water! The lie was that she didn't actually try to connect it and that she was going to secretly find out if my warranty was void. Not what I call informed consent.
So I asked her to check and try updating the phone anyway and off she trundled. Less than no time she returned telling me that my iPhone couldn't be seen by three of their computers! ***! It was working on my three computers at home!
In fact as I type this it's running another update this moment. About 3/4 done.
So now Apple's Update Bricked my iPhone which was working perfectly without any problems. If they hadn't brought their update out the phone would still be working just great!
Needless to say I'm extremely annoyed yet composed (for the moment).
So my options at this point seem to be to (1) replace the phone for ~260.00 CAD or (2) upgrade to a 3GS for an indeterminate amount if FIDO permits it, or (3) hope that Apple home base gets their act together with a new iTunes update which can at least get the phone working again, (4) toss the phone off a bridge, (5) sue Apple and FIDO for their negligence in providing faulty software updates that bricked the phone. Grrr... Arrrggg....
Oh, it just failed the update again! At least it can be seen by my computers (two mac and one vista box).
    Ok, now what...
CHECK YOUR iPhone warranty voided strips to see if they are RED/PINK! If it's only iPhones with RED that are the problem then maybe that's the cause. HOWEVER, if even ONE iPhone has this problem and it's not got a RED water strip then it's conclusive that the problem is elsewhere - basic diagnostic process and rock solid logic. Please check your RED WARRANTY VOIDED STRIPS and let me know here... you check them with a flash light at the bottom of your iPhone in the slot where the SIMM card is and where the dock/cable connector goes in. Shin the light into there and move the phone or the light about till you see either a 1/4 inch long strip - RED/PINK means you Apple won't honor your warranty or their craftsmanship.
Ok... now to find out how much it will cost to upgrade to a 3GS on the FIDO plan. Sigh. Grrr... arrrggggg....

  • TS5376 iTunes once again won't close. Past versions of iTunes had the most annoying behavior that when ever closed it would immediately reopen. Apple update just installed the latest version and the problem is back. Help.

Past versions of iTunes for Windows had the annoying behavior that it couldn't be closed. If I tried to exit or close the window iTunes would just open back up again. It had gone away, but apple just installed version 11.1.5.5 and it's back! The only way to exit is to open task manager and kill the process. Nothing else seems to work. Guess what Apple, I really don't want to have iTunes open all the time. I think the only answer is to stop using iTunes, since I don't have any Apple devices anyway, and go with a different music player on my PC.

    Thanks.
Just in case, we'd better check on another old potential culprit (don't see it reported much lately, though) ... do you have any Logitech gaming software installed on the PC?
If so, perhaps try the suggestion from the following post:
