I had backed up my music files, and then my hard disk died and was replaced.  I replaced the files on the new drive, but get the Itunes message that I don't have proper authorization to open my own files.

"Need proper authorization" to have ITunes acknowledge my own music files which have been reintroduced on a new hard drive from a back up hard drive.
