I had to change my Apple ID because it was using an email I no longer have access to. I was able to change it just fine. Now when I try an upodate my apps, it brings up my old Aple ID name so I am unable to update my apps. How do I change the that?

It sounds like you may have created a new Apple ID and not edited the old one. Any applications that were downloaded from the old account will need the Apple ID and password from the account that downloaded them to update. You can either enter the password for that account or delete the applications and download them fresh from your new account to resolve this issue. If you mean that Find My Phone is asking for a password to a different Apple ID to your current Apple IDand that ID is a previous version of your current ID, not an entirely different one.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID using your current password, you don’t need access to this address if it’s previously been used with your Apple ID, once you have saved these details enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone" and delete the account from your device.
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, save it once again and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

Had to change Apple ID due to email address no longer valid. Trying to change id for icloud...saw direction online about signing out of icloud and signing back in...when it ask questions about contacts, photos, etc. being deleted how do I answer those? That just sort of freaks me out.

For the ones that give you an option, select the option you want (keep on the Mac or Delete). For the ones that are simply warning you, click on Delete from Mac.
They will all come back when you sign back on, since all you did was change your existing Apple ID to a new email address. It's the same iCloud account, just with a different name.
It's the only way to get your updated ID signed onto iCloud.

To change your iCloud ID you have to delete the account, then sign in with the alternate ID. Before doing this, if you want to keep your data and move it to the new account, go to Settings>iCloud and turn each of your synced data to Off, and when prompted choose to keep the data on your iPhone. When everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account, the sign back in with your other account ID and turn syncing back on; when prompted, choose merge.
If all your data is already in your other account then you don't need to do this. Just delete the account from your phone, selected not to keep the data, then sign into the new account, turn on data syncing and if prompted, choose merge.

So I got a new email address, and afterwards I set up my new Apple ID for my iPad and Macbook. However, on my iPhone 4s, the account still is tied to the old email and I cannot verify my account of switch it over because it will not log into my old Apple ID. I do not want to delete the cloud account on my iphone because it warns that a lot of info will be deleted. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use. (You will get an option to keep the data on your device when you delete the account.)
When you do this you may find that the password for your old ID isn't accepted. If this should happen, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, you need to temporarily recreate your old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account. I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there. On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back. Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email. The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?
