I had to reformat my computer and put my Itunes on an external hard drive. Once I fixed my computer and put Itunes back I can't itunes to open on my PC. I see it but it appears locked now.
I reformed my PC and placed my Itunes on a external hard drive. I have moved them back to the PC but can not open. How are i get my Itunes working I can see them in my files but they are locked.
I'm sure when it was taken to reformat, he just put everything from my computer onto the external. I know he did't save them to any back up disc's. When he moved everything back is when I lost my Itunes library and it only shows as that XML. I do have an old back up I can restore most.
Any way to import from my touch what is on it, I have not connected it to my PC since.
I did get all my music purchased on, but under purchased I can't find my movies.

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. When i run Time Machine to back up my computer on to an external hard drive, i have no way of knowing when the back up process has been completed. This is necessary to know because i don't leave my external hard drive connected to the computer. I routinely disconnect it after backing up the hard drive, and then i store the external hard drive in a different location from the computer. So, knowing when the back up process has been completed would be a very helpful thing to have the computer specify.
Just enable Time Machine's menu extra (System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Show Time Machine in menu bar.
This will add a little Time Machine icon to your menubar. When Time Machine is actively backing up your data, the icon will spin as a visual indicator. You can also click the menu icon to see the backup status, including how much data is left to back up. -
just got Prosoft drive genius 3 software, and it's telling me that the external hard drive that i am using for my time machine back up drive needs to be defragmented. is it wise to do this or should i not??
Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture. How can I access the Aperture Library on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup? I can only access the application but not the library..
Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it. -
I am struggling! Help! I need to move 3500 pics-in TIFF format in 175 folders and sub folders from my old PSE6, Windows XP to my new PSE13, Windows8.1. I have the PSE6 backed up on an external hard drive. What is the safe way to do this? Can anyone at Adobe help me? Please?
Use the Organizer backup & restore method, starting the restore from the TLY file. Probably best to use a custom location as the XP file structure will be different. See this link for further help:

I had to disconnect my My Book USB to G5, firewire to external hard drive
I had this hard drive formated journaled whatever was recommended and it has been used to drag all photos off my full G5 internal drive which has only a 80GB hard drive. I have added a second internal drive and have successfully formated it and it shows up on desktop. I reconnected another Maxtor 40GB HD and it showed up when i reconnected power to computer after moving desks around for construction.
Now the 360MY Book external hard drive after connecting power and firewire and usb to G5 does not show up on hard drive. I was using this partioned. On part for backing up with SuperDuper. It does not show up on hard drive. I should have bought a full firewire 500 for photos but this was on sale. I had to write to this forum before. Turning off power, disconnecting the MYBOOK and turning off the computer by shutting down did not work for me. I think as I recall someone wrote to on restarting the G5 holding down two keys like command something C or D or whatever. I have tried various reboots and unconnects and cannot get my backup system working nor access 90 % of my photo collection as I dragged them to a folder on the external drive as recommended to free up space on internal drive. I am back to only 14 GB space on my primary. Please help. I paid twice for home consultants and got burnt both times. Neither guy helped me set up a system of photoshop files on my external drive or recovered my lost files which should have been in .Mac backup on my La Cie or on MYbook in Super Duper. Why do consultants get to charge by hour $100 without results??????? sad switcher.Pcs recognize external drives and don;t lose IPHOTO libraries every time they get to about 12000 images. Very disappointed in the cost of IPHOTO and won't ever use it again. It takes up way to much space and is always lost ( not always by me ....twice by apple store geniuses.After posting I decided since I rant too much for your taste I would try another time. Is there an order in plugging in and powering up an external after all is disconnected. I don't think I did anything different. The Current WD MyBook 360 is back alive. But I still need to get my LaCie firewire Porsche working. I only have two usb ports on the back of my G5 so I must have used my Belkin power enabled hubs before when I had them all working. I only disconnected due to a remodel of this office and it had to be done. Any referals to Apple referance articles on using external hard drives would be welcome. I have been unable to find any. Please disregard prior message today. It was the usb plug into my computer that I hadn't changed in my attempts to trouble shoot. always power.

hi i have a macbook pro 2011 model, i decided to upgrade my hardrive and bought a 500gb blank hardrive, my query is because i wasnt able to save most of my files and my operating system to an external hard drive, i have a usb stick with a mavericks os installed on it. will i be able to do a straight install by just doing this method? i will be grateful for any tips or help u might offer, thanks.
Is it just bootable or does it have the Mavericks installation files on it? If so, yes. If not, no. You might consider getting an external enclosure. Put your old drive in it and boot to its Recovery partition. You can install from there. As a matter of fact, you can run Migration Assistant and get all your stuff over too.

Hi all, my external hardrive is no longer being recognized on my Macbook pro after I tried to transfer some documents from another Macbook( that used the Lion operating system) to mine. i'm currently using the Mac OS X 10.6.8. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
I suspect the drive got disconnected, somehow, on that other system and corrupted the drive because of the Disconnection.
Connect it to your system and open Disk Utility and see if the drive is even being seen. If it is all the data on is more then likely lost and it will need to be repartitioned and or just erased and reformatted. -
Can't see external hard drives
I have a 2 TB external hard drive with a lot of video on it. I have always been able to open it up on my powermac G5, but lately it does not appear on my desktop and I can't open it up. It does appear on the desktop and I can open it up when I connect it to my macbook. But again it won't up on on the G5. Any suggestions. Thank you in advance.
I'm having the same problem. I have found that if I have the external drive on and try to restart my iMac it won't restart. Then after shutting off the external drive, restarting my computer again, and then turning on the external drive it does finally appear on the desktop. But only after this awkward
series of moves. Not a solution, but I wonder what this means... -

How can I do this?In the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences, turn off the option to automatically copy the music to the iTunes music folder, and then drag all of the music into the open iTunes window.

I keep my photo files on a separate external hard drive, separate from my laptop hard drive. And I want to be able to use time machine as the back-up system to back up BOTH the computer's hard drive AND the external hard drive.... and i want all of the "back-up" information contained on a separate standalone external HD. So in the end, I have a 250GB computer hardrive, a 1TB external hardrive, and I want to have a 2nd external hard drive that will be the location to store the "back-ups" (using time machine) which will be either a 2TB or 3TB harddrive.
I am in dire need of help....Yes, just make sure that they are not excluded in Time Machine.

Unlocking external hard drive that was locked with time machine
I use a MBP Retina (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.9.4. I left the MBP at Apple for repair and they changed the mother card and reformatted my HD (SSD). Since I had a backup on a WD My Passport external drive I was not too worried to restore. I had clicked the option "password protected" on TM and therefore the external HD was password protected. I also copied pasted many files on the same external hard drive, in case TM would fail one day to operate I thought that I would still have my files ...
But I was very surprised that when I plugged in my external HD into my MBP it didn't recognize it at all. The external HD did not appear on the screen anymore. Nor in Finder. It appeared in Disk Utility but it could not be mounted. Basically it was impossible to access my data. After a while and talking with Apple Support on the phone we could reach a point where a window appeared asking me the password for the access to the HD. Unfortunately it didn't work. The . password was not recognized. Even though we had selected the right country with the icon upper right on the screen to make sure that we used the correct keyboard.
So finally I reinstalled completely the OSX (coming rom Lion all the way to the last OSX) on the MBP and finally I could restore it with my TM. I spent three days on this since it only worked with one OSX - don't remember honestly which one - and not the last one. Don't know why.
Anyway.
Today I have my MPB working but I miss all the files that are still on my external HD because I cannot access to it anymore. As I said the recovery happened all of a sudden with TM with a former OSX and not the 10.9.4. With this current OSX my HD does not appear on the desktop nor on finder. Nothing. It is locked by TM and I cannot even key in the password to unlock it. Useless to say that I have the password.

run the following terminal commands (copy and paste, please)
sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. this should unlock your drives. -
Macbook no longer seeing external hard drive
I have an Intel Macbook running 10.6.7. Yesterday I had two USB devices plugged in, one of them being my external hard drive. I started to unplug the hard drive by accident and quickly plugged it back in. However, I think this has now resulted in my Macbook no longer recognizing that device. I have turned the computer off with the device unplugged then turned it back on and plugged it in again, but it still doesn't see that drive. I've also tried changing ports, which didn't help, and the computer is able to see other devices using both ports. Any help?
Unplugging the hard drive itself from its power source (it's one that needs to be plugged into a wall outlet) solved the issue.

Mac OSX is telling me to reformat my external hard drive - HELP!
I have Fantom Drives external hard drive which I use to backup my Mac (via Time Machine) as well as for general storage. Recently, when I turned on my external hard drive I was given the following message:
"The disk "Time Machine Backups" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
Basically, I can use anything on the external hard drive as well as copy files FROM the drive, but I cannot add anything new to it. I went to Disk Utility to try and repair the disk, but the button is not available so I clicked Verify Disk. The results in red were the following:
"Incorrect number of thread records
Invalid sibling link
Volume Check failed
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed"
I wondered if erasing the external hard drive would possibly fix the situation. Is it even worth it to try? I was able to copy the most important files to my iPod, but I don't have nearly enough room to copy everything I need (otherwise I would just do it).
My other option is to by a new hard drive and move everything over, but I am hoping I don't have to do that.
Does anyone have any other ideas?if the drive can not be repaired you should try reformatting.
