A program required for this install to complete could not be run". But it does not say what program is required. I've had to reinstalled windows xp before and never had a problem.
Go START/ALL PROGRAMS/APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE"
If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but "Deselect" any other software offered at the same time.
Once done, try another iTunes install

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time? -

Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.) -
i have tried to install iTunes 5 but when Windows it starts to install it says there`s a problem with my Windows installer Paket and cancel the Program. I`ve searched for answears in the web and they said ischould waste my old Itunes version and try it again. But it happend the same again! Now i havent any iTunes version and iAlso can`t Load a new one!!!! Pllease help me !!!
I solved it myself, after the "note" which came back from FF/Mozilla just as I finished my message, commenting on what it was that my system had , I wnnt back to check my plug-ins etc. I downloaded the latest Java, BOTH 32bit AND 64 bit versions and latest Firefox.
Now all is working.

After updating to itunes 10 I now get an error message that says there is a problem with the windows installer package. I have tried all the things that others suggested but cannot download itunes at all now. Have I lost itunes forever?

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Trying to download iOS 5 it says there is a problem with my Windows Installer Package?Help?
I'm trying to download the iOS 5 and I get almost all the way done but then it stops when it's on Status and goes to an error and says "There is a problem with this windows Installer Package. A program run as part of the set up did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I have a windows vista computer.. but it should be able to run on it...
Any ideas on how to fix this??

Well, after reading the above post by 'wiss...' i went to start Apple Software Update and was getting another (very cryptic) error message just trying to start ASU. I thought perhaps the problem with this program was causing iTunes 10.5 not to install - so I went to uninstall Apple Software Update using Windows Add/Remove Programs, and got another error message (not allowing the uninstall)!
Knowing there are programs out there just for the purpose of doing a forced & thorough uninstall, I search Cnet Downloads for the best free Uninstaller and downloaded Revo Uninstaller. Used Revo to uninstall Apple Software Update (and all associated files/data it found in registry).
Then to be sure, ran Disk Cleanup in windows to empty the Temp files/folders and Restarted the computer.
Finally, I ran the iTunes Setup.exe for 10.5 and it installed successfully!! Woohoo! I hope my experience may help others with similar troubles!
And thanks to Wiss for directing me to the problematic ASU program! -

Thanks!I have been in touch with Apple support in reference to my problem. We went through every solution available, and found no fix. The tech then suggested I contact Microsoft concerning this issue. I thought that suggestion was just to get me pointed somewhere but Apple. Boy was I wrong!! I contacted Microsoft, and was directed to a free download called Microsoft Fix. This program fixed something in the regisitor, and wala everything was fixed!! I now have I-Cloud and I-Tunes loaded and working well. So, if you can't install Apple Software and are running Window 7 you might give Microsoft Fix a try, it fixed my problem.....

I got the iPod touch, when i went to connect it to my computer to upload my music to it, It said that I need to upgrade to 10.5 but when I did I got the message below. I just got a new computer with windows 7. Whenever I try to install itunes, I get an error message saying "There is a problem with the windows installer package, a program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I tried to install other apple software, quicktime and safari, and I get the same error message. I extracted the itunes64setup file and can install the itunes file (which is just a shortcut, not the actual program) Bonjour, Apple Application support, quicktime, and Apple Mobile Device Support. I cannot install quicktime via http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ however.

Ive googled around and found people with with the same error have gone to their control pannel and repaired apple software update, which solved the problem. However, I cannot install the apple software update file, so it isnt in my add or remove programs, all the other files are. Not being able to install apple software update is preventing safari and itunes from installing. Any ideas or help would be apprectiated.REPAIR "apple software update" in programs in control panel. Then run the Quick time install package again.

Okay ... try downloading and saving a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe to your PC from the Apple website:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now download a trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.php
Open the iTunesSetup.exe with WinRAR, and try to run the standalone install of Apple Application Support from the AppleApplicationSupport.msi you find in there.
It works now BUT there are still problems. It is not allowing or recognizing my Cd/DVD player and i CANT burn. Looking still for this fix.
