I hate my Neo 2 Platinium

On an average of every third time i't hangs on boot either when showing the Bios image or during windows boot about 5 seconds before the keboard lights are supposed to flash. This morning I had to reboot 4 times before I got it up and running. However, once I get into window it's totally stable.
About once a week the USB printer stops to work. When this happens I have to disconnect the USB device, pull out the USB plug and then insert it again. This is a pain as all people at home print trough my computer.
Tried to update the Bios in hope it would help. After doing so the RAID no longer worked and I had to buy $200 software to recover the data and get it up and running again.
I just want a computer that works, I'm not interested in having to spend hours fiddling with settings and hardware.
I would trow this card in the dustbin straight away if it where not for the fact that I not only would need a new mobo(the cost for this is no problem) but I would also  need to buy one more HD and make to make a backup of the data on the RAID as well as invest several days more on reinstalling.

No matter it is all a part of the fun. We just need to realise that there is the potential for things not going well and if we choose to build it ourselves then we need to step up to that plate and fix things when they don't go well.
Knowing how to go about fixing things is a big key to success. Having a great resource for help like this forum provides is even better.
At the end of the day going in to this with the proper attitude will make things go much smoother. Whether it is building fixing or asking for help. That is all I was trying to point out. We are here to work together because we enjoy this kind of stuff. If someone does not enjoy the challenge then there is always someone that will build it for you and charge you for that privaledge.
I agree 100% BUT i have something to add here.
I hope this post dose not get killed as I think more people should speak out.
I don’t want to bash any person or comment made here but I feel a few things need to be said.
I have been building computers for personal use and for customers for many years. I have been around computers and in the computer industry for over 10 years(and i still keep learning new thing). I have built all my own computers right from 386’s up until my current machines. I have used many different HDD technologies (MFM, IDE, SCSI and SATA, and many different HDD controllers. I have also used properly hundreds of different motherboards, RAM etc. I have also been overclocking for many, many years and used many different CPUs.
All this being said I have never in my life had a motherboard with more issues and more difficult to get stable than the K8N Neo2 Platinum.
I understand that these fourms are to help people solve problems and get things working, but I see to many posts from people telling others they must just be satisfied with work around’s (try BIOS, don’t use a PS/2 mouse, don’t overclock etc.).
If a motherboard has a PS/2 port on it, it should work full stop. The USB ports should not lose devises or hang on boot up. I still have the problem where my mouse dose not get detected my windows and I have to unplug it and then plug it in again on another USB port and or reboot the PC. (UNACCEPTABLE FULL STOP). If the motherboard has overclocking futures (core cell, AI overclocking, whatever), they should work. You should be able to overclock around 5 - 10%. After all that is what all the advertising tells us. It’s built into the BIOS for crying out load.
People are pay huge amount of money for stuff that is not doing what is advertised to do and this is wrong and should not be tolerated. I believe a big reason for this is that manufactures are pushing stuff into the market with out properly testing there items, in am attempt to beat the competition to market. At the end of the day we as the consumer lose. One should not have to sit for days and days trying different BIOSs, RAM, PS/2 or USB mice, keyboards, VGA card, etc to get a motherboard stable and working. This is unacceptable full stop. I believe there is a hardware problem with the nForce3 chipset and some of the nvidia 6800 series of VGA cards. I agree it may not be a big one as a lot of hardware works, but there is sure something wrong or else so many people would not have so many problems. You pay good money for your half working stuff and that aint right FULL STOP.

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinium can't detect PCI devices

    Hi
I have just bourght a K8N Neo 2 Platinium with Wireless LAN. I installed windows on it with on problems. My problem is that i have a Tv-tuner, and the wireless LAN adapter that's included in the bundle, installed in 2 of the PCI slots. Neither of the I/O devices gets detected. I've tried to update bios, changing slots, reconfiguring bios, nothing help. Also one of the 2 onboard NIC's Is'nt found in windows like my 2 I/O devices.
    What can my problem be?

not really the same problem Im afraid.
I believe our problem is with the PCI slot(s) and nothing to do with usb.
I managed to get the NVIDIA network adapter working... turns out just to be an option in intergrated peripherals was turned off...
However this doesnt really help me, I wont be using the onboard network anyway, I need to use the pci fibre card.

  • SATA Problem with 865PE NEO-2 Platinium

i bought a new SATA hard disk (western digital 200gb) for my computer. i installed it then formated it and make the new partitions with Partition Magic 8.
after statring to copy my files from my old hard disk (western digital 80gb) the speed is too slow it even hangs sometimes and computer stops to responde to any thing i have to restart it.
my bios is V3.A every thing works fine except the speed when using the new hard disk.
    i have a P4 2.4 256kb 256X2 kingstone Ram.
it worked fine befors with the 160gb, i enabled the SATA harddisk to work in SATA1 mode only but nothing changed.
plz help me as quickly as possible, should i change the hard disk or what is the problem.

i was able to get higher performance by combination mode in setup
    (Win 98 SE / ME)
    ATA On Chip Mode: Combined
    ATA Config: SATA + PATA
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
    SATA RAID Enabled: No
    The rest as defaults.
but i was only able to detect the SATA hard disk and PATA only, or the SATA hard disk and the CDROM & CD-R only i wasnt able to detect the 4.
    the results where:
    Transfer Rate: Min 35.9mb/sec
                        Max 63.9mb/sec
                        Average 54.6mb/sec
    Access Time: 13.4ms
    Burst Rate: 96.9mb/sec
    CPU usage: 9.9%
these results are good but if i use any of the other settings in setup the previous results are shown, by the way im using Windows XP pro SP2.
i got a weired error under health tab all the status was OK except one FAILED

    Worst: 23
    Threshold: 45

sorry i wasnt able to post the photo with all results.
any suggetions on how to get this performnace or higher in any mode other than combination or to detect all connected drives (by the way the only option in combination mode is PATA+SATA no other option can be modified)
and what about this falied satuts does it affect the hard disk and thanks in advance.

  • Problem enabling Agp 8x and Fast write on a Msi Neo 2 Platinium mobo.

I bought, about 2-3 months ago this motherboard and I installed in it a Sapphire Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition. The problem is that I can't set, in my BIOS, the AGP to 3.0 (4X/8X) because the PC , then, seems to act weirdly and give me all kind of problems. When I go in Start --> Run --> and I enter "dxdiag", all of my direct 3D options are disabled and I cannot set them to "ON" as the "Enable" button seems to be grayed out.
The only way I can run the PC stable with the video card and the motherboard is to set the AGP to 4X. That way, all of my Direct 3D options will be back.
When I set it to 8X, sometimes the computer will freeze, the screen may turn black randomly and doesn't re-open. In my games, the levels (like CoD or Unreal Tournament, All the BF Games) won't load, it simply will freeze on the load screen.
Is this problem due to some incompatibility between the Mobo and the graphic card???
Is there a way I can keep the PC stable when enabling the AGP 3.0 (4x/8x)?
    Thanks.

I would run drivercleaner pro and reinstall all your drivers.
The problem start from Bios.He can not anaible AGP 8x, so this doesn't have to do with drivers.

  • FX5500-T128 memory interface 64bits or 128??

Hi, I buyed the new card MSI FX5500-T128, 128MB DDR 400MHz, for 97 US Dollars. I only buyed this card for the 128bits memory bandwidth, but when I run Rivatuner 2.0 rev 14.3 show me this Card has a 64bit memory interface !!! oh  !!! This is real ?? MSI user manual say diferent, this say 128 bits, what happened???
    I need an answer.
    Thanks.

    hey guys,
i wanted to ask for some advice on guys like me who have bought the MSI FX 5200 T128 which is 64 bit memory card, that should we just throw it out in the garbage although i bought it for about 70 $ i could not determine it was whether 64 bit or 128 bit because the serial no. stamp did not say anything about it although there were china made cards with information about 128 bit or 64 bit ? so guys what do you suggest i do with my graphic card i just can't sell this card for 70 $ again you know it would be considered used and i may only get 50 $ if i resale it to a local retailer but to tell you guys the truth, in Pakistan almost 90% people buy this 64 bit card and are happy with it nobody knows what 128 bit card is they say either we have FX 5200, FX 5600,  FX 5700 Ultra and above. When i asked about the FX 5200 Ultra version they said it does not exist anymore or perhaps its not a sellign item. So what do you suggest guys shoul i keep this card for my new 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 Prescott system. ?
My old system is as under
    Pentium 3 733 Mhz 256 cache.
    Dell Intel 815 chipset board
Geforce MX 400 32 MB (advertised as 64 Mb)
    Memory 256 Mb 133 Mhz
    My new system.
Pentium 4 2.40c Prescott processor 1 Mb Cache
MSI Neo 2 Platinium board (120 $ price very expensive)
    Kingston DDR 400 Mhz
    MSI Geforce FX 5200 T128 card ( the one  i have 64 bit )
Now the other Cards like 5600 regular price was about 110-120 $ so do you guys think i had a choice if asked several times about the 128 bit card the retailer said they don't have 5200 128 bit anyway Even i saw Inno3D Tornado Fx 5200 with a sticker saying clearly that it was 64 bit and everyone was buying it its price was
    70 $  as well
So what do you think guys

  • RAM TROUBLE

I just got a msi k8n neo 4 platinium, with a amd 3500+,and 2gb (2x1gb) geil ram pc3200,but i have a freind who give me 512 mn geil ram pc 3200,but when i install it,my ram is onlu running 333hhz single channel 64bit,byt when i used the 2gb ram they were running 400mhz dual channel 128 bit,why is that

Support for mismatched DIMM sizes per channel .
For Revision E and later revisions the Mod64BitMux bit (Function 2: Offset 90h bit 6), can be used to
configure the 128-bit interface as two 64-bit interfaces for 939 packages. This mode allows
mismatched DIMMs to be installed in the upper and lower DIMM slots without reducing any of the
DRAM capacity. When operating in this mode the DRAM interface never operates as a 128-bit
interface and the two 64-bit interfaces are not accessed simultaneously.

  • 3gb ram only runs 333mhz

I have at msi k8n neo 4 platinium,i use 2 run 2gb of ram(2x1gb)i just got another gb(2x512),so all ram slots are full, but now they only runs 333mhz,why's that i got the latest bios 1b

    Hi,
I understand that you try to run 4 sticks of memory and it drops to DDR333?
Well it's because of the CPU, AMD64's only support 4 banks of memory at full speed, but banks are not the same as slots.
    1 stick single sided = 1 bank
    1 stick double sided = 2 banks
so 4 sticks double sided = 8 banks, ergo it drops.
Some are lucky that it doesn't drop, but for most, yes it drops.

  • Overclocking of MSI K8N neo platinium

MSI K8N neo platinium, Bios 1.4

    400w psu
Before when I had just one memory chip(512mb in slot 1), I had no problem to run 235Mhz x10. All I had to do was the following :
    Put hdd in SATA 4
    Set AGP to 68Mhz
    Adjust cpu voltage from 1.45 - 1.55v
Set mem. clock to 166Mhz (sense it will increase as you raise the FSB)
Now I`ve bought one more identic memory chip. I have now 2x512MB memory placed in slot 1 and 3.
I followed the same steps as above, but with terrible results. Max 215Mhz x10 stable.
I`m pretty sure it`s not the memory chips that`s the problem, as they run stable
with original settings ( witch is higher speeds (200Mhz) than those I run on the memory when overclocking (166 - 195Mhz).
I would be greatfull for any tips or solutions that you might think would help me (and others) to reach better o/c results.

try slots 1+2 instead of 3, i have found that i can't oc very well in 1+3 either.

    Yesterday im installed live update utility. Im downloaded bios 1.9 and update my mobo. Restart. All are ok. Computer boot. Tooday im power on my comp and mobo no post. I got strange dbrackets informations. Sometimes is 1 - g  2 - r  3 - g  4 - r   or 1 - r  2 - n  3 - n   4 - g.
    r - red g - green n - nothing
    Whats going on ?

    Seagate 80GB Sata NCQ
    Teac CD-RW 16x
    Liteon DVD-RW 8x

I had a similar problem to yours... comp wouldn't boot or post after I flashed to 1.9. Removing one memstick lets me boot and comp runs normal but not with two dimms! When I lowered the  memorybus from 200 to 166 in bios though, everything is as normal so now I'm running my PC3200 at 333MHz  but other than that I have no problems with anything. I think that might be your problem as well and of course you cant use the bios rescue disk if boot sequense gets stuck on memory and never gets as far as serching for a floppy. But if you can't get into bios even with 1 memstick you cant lower the memspeed so that would be a catch 22. If you have (or can borrow) 1 slower memstick no faster than 333 Mhz your comp will probably boot then. I don't know yet if I will try to flash to 1.7 or if I'll wait for an update but who knows when MSI will have a WORKING bios for us...

    What is the different?

i havent had a chance to look this up, but i would assume each of those serial numbers is for
    K8n neo
    K8n neo FSR
    k8n Neo Platinum
each of these has different onboard devices present
standard k8n will have the bare essentials
FSR will have sata and onboard sound
Platinum has sata + firewire and maybe other stuff too
i just noticed they are making this board in micro-ATX format O.O
that maybe one of the other serials
    hope this helps
