I hate to sound like a "Pilgrim" . . . but . . .

I've seen many references to something called an "easter egg" and it's going right over my head! I seem to recall hearing the term before . . . and I'm NOT referring to fond memories from my childhood!
I, too, have been having one heck of a time with iDVD 4.0 - crashes and burning into infinity - it seems to be contagious! (Should it be - that this inquiry have been made before, please excuse my ignorance - as I've not been able to find a definition on any of the threads, here!)
Perhaps, my esteemed (and far more knowledgeable), fellow, forum members would be so kind as to enlighten me, nonetheless?
Also . . . I must really be missing something: I (supposedly), have about 56 gig of hard-drive . . . but, despite dumping almost every file I've created (including most of my music files), I have only around 23 gig available! I've optimized AND re-installed all my system software - yet, that only yielded me just under 10 gigs of "new" space!
I mean . . . besides Photoshop and Office Suite, I only have (for the most part), the programs that came with my MAC - with the obvious exceptions of drivers and such for my peripherals (scanner, printer, Wacom tablet & Zip drive).
Could this the norm?
And if I may . . . isn't 512 meg of RAM enough to "power" iMovie & iDVD? I've heard that "maxing" out my RAM could cause more problems than it would solve. Is this really the case?
Oh! I've also read (on here), that I should quit all programs, while running iDVD. Again . . . forgive me . . . but, does that include iMovie?
Thank you, very much, for any suggestions/explanations.

Easter Egg or "Hurz and Pfurz" is a popular workaround which is available as a free download from
http://homepage.mac.com/geerlingguy/macsupport/mac_help/pages/15-burn_idvdother.html
iDVD5 has this built in.
I also suggest you get another free download Mac Sweeper which you will find on http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Mac-Sweeper.shtml
Now I would suggest the following steps but first make sure there is about 20GB free on the internal HD then:
1) Shut down/Restart without any applications running.
2) Run Mac Sweeper carrying out all the optimize options including repair permissions and, under clean, empty caches.
3) Launch iDVD and the project
4) "Burn" a copy to disc to hard disc using the Easter Egg workaround.
5) Go to bed and have a good night's sleep.
6) When the run is finished (always for me 1 hour in less than 8 hours) examine the DVD image and play it using the DVD player in the applications folder
7) If and when satisfied and burn a copy using Disc Utility, full instructions on
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
but you just use the second half to burn the DVD.
This approach means you can readily produce multiple copies. I have taken to burning the DVD without any other applications running as I think this may cause bad spots on the disc.

  • Hate sound like an idiot but will downloading iTunes 7 erase....

I really hate to sound like an idiot but when I look at the update iTunes and it takes me to the page to download, if I do this, will it erase what I already have in my library. I just want to make sure as I have had hinkier things happen and I really don't want to lose all that I have amassed. Thanks again

If this is an iTunes question, as it seems to be, then you really should be looking and, if still needed, posting in one of the "iTunes for Windows" forums.
Speaking for the Mac OS though, no .... your iTunes Library just gets carried along and appears automatically in the new version of iTunes.

  • My macbook pro won't stop making noise! It sounds like the fan but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

my macbook pro won't stop making noise! It sounds like the fan but I'm not sure. Any ideas? It's really worrying me because I haven't had it for up tp 2months and last week everytime I switch it on it makes sooo much noise. And I treat like an egg so I don't understand whats going on.

    Hey,
My friend had a very similar issue to yours. The issue came down to the pins of the MagSafe not meeting with the MacBook perfectly causing the lights and the transfer of power to be wacko. I'm not sure if this is issue that your experiencing, but its worth checking out the pins and the MagSafe area on your MacBook for debris.
Troubleshooting Magsafe power adapters with stuck pins
If that is all clear, then I would suggest you call AppleCare or take it in to an Apple Store to have it checked out.

  • I hate to sound like an irate customer, but i really am.

Right. From the beginning. I was given an ipod shuffle 2 years ago for my 18th. loved it, but i have a massive library, and i got really jealous when my boyfriend got a 3rd gen nano. So for this birthday my dad gets me a beautiful pink nano. it arrived 24hrs ago. Since then, it has lagged, frozen, reset, refused to connect with my pc, and refused to play half of my playlist. Well. One is not impressed. so i look online for support. why is this site the most roundabout excursion ever to get some bleeding support? i tried to rest my ipod (after restoring it 3 times may i add) because my pc said there's a problem and it wont sync. anyway long story short, ever since the reset my it just keeps resetting itself over and over. i am hoping that when it runs itself out of battery it may begin to work again. but after everything else ive experienced with apple in the last 24 hours im doubtful. This is the first birthday present ive recieved from my dad so i am, shall we say, VERY gutted about it all. So kids... what is there to do now?
ps, there isnt even a simple way to complain.

These are user support forums where users support each other, they are not full of Apple employees answering questions. If you have a complaint then you should return the iPod to the place it was purchased and ask for a refund as it sounds faulty.
Have you ensured you have the correct version of iTunes installed and that you are running the minimum version of Windows?

  • I HAVE TIS NOISE IN MY IMAC AND IT DOES NOT SOUND LIKE THE FAN BUT A SWOOSHING FRYING SOUND THAT LASTS FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS BUT NOT EVERY TIME I USE THE IMAC.  LIKE THIS TIME, I'M ON IT FOR 45 MIN. & IT DID NOT HAPPEN. ?? WHAT IS IT ?

I have had this imac for one year and 2 mos.  recently I hear a swooshing noise like speakers are frying when I power up and again intermittantly which lasts about only a few second and quiets down by itself. I have mt portable DVD drive unplugged, I turn down the volumn on the imac but it makes no difference.
I don't have applecare so I guess I should take it to the local apple store in Santa Monica ffor them to check it out.  But it could be that it wont do it when you expect it to happen ???
Is anyone familiar with this sound ?

Could it be the hard drive making this noise?
Or could it be the fans?

  • I'm going to sound like an idiot but...

I really need some help!! I'm about to pull out my hair. Okay, here it goes. I have Ntlworld for my internet provider, the told me I could also have a wireless connection. I asked the installer if all I needed was the airport station to go wireless... he said yes. Today I purchased the Airport Express and tried to get my wireless internet working (I have used it before) I even called NTL to ask them about the wireless info (of course they had no idea how to do it). After looking into it, apparently NTL offer wireless through Actiontec, but you've got to pay 100 GBP for it!!! is there anyway around this?? I've already have all of the products to run wireless..... do I actually have to pay them more just to make it work???
please help me (i'm so pathetic lol)

You should be able to connect your NTL cable modem to the ethernet port of the Airport Express.
Before you do this, unplug everything and wait at least 30 minutes, you may need to wait overnight before powering everything back up.

Someone played a prank on you and entered a keyboard shortcut to change lol to something else. Your can delete that shortcut in Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts

Dear Mr. Toad (my all-time favorite ride at Disneyland ;-) ..
Thanks so much for your detailed reply.. my netbook is in the bedroom, turned off.. I (so far) only use it in the evening, in the bedroom.. I've saved your response, and will try your suggestions, and let you know if they solve the problem I described. I really appreciate you taking the time to post such a detailed reply..
I can't answer your Thunderbird "configuration" questions, because I'm in the living room, using the crap Vista laptop, on which I plan to install Thunderbird, and then take Windoze Mail out in the street and drive over it a few times.. I'll get back to you one way or the other, and let you know if your instructions solved the problem, or not..
I don't understand why Thunderbird "out of the box", so to speak, simply doesn't forward HTML emails with embedded graphics, (like Outlook Excess, and Winblows Mail do).. without having to go through those steps. I personally HATE HTML email, but over the years, it's become more and more prevelant.. so it's a problem I must fix..
    Thanks again..

  • My Ibook sounds like it working on something but it actually dont! ANNOYING

Been looking for answer through all the forum couldnt finde the right answer. First of all sorry if my English is not correct Im originally from Norway.
Just got my Ibook G4 month ago. And at the beggining I was amazed how silent it working! But few days ago it start to show some behavior. here is symptoms:
It still works very quiet, BUT! when it totally quiet I can hear that even if I do nothing on laptop it still give that tiny sound like processor(?) or harddisk(?) trying to do something. Hard to explain, this sounds like when I open some program computer give this quiet scratching sound when processor starts working. Well thats sound comes and repeats non stop every 10 sec even If I dont do absolutely anything.
I was trying to use disk utility and its appear that everything is allright.
I was trying to monitor computer activity and here is what it shows:
    ACTIVE PROCESSE:
    pmTool ......... root
    Activity monitor
    window server
    config ... root
    kernel_task ... root
Those processes working all the time when I do monitor activity
And this processe appear from time to time
    SystemUIserver
    update.... root
Does anyone have an idea what can cause this "working processes" in my Ibook which gives this tiny sound.
It dosnt seems big problem for me, but it is annoying especially this part that I dont know what can cause that sound. Im totally in love with my Ibook and was really amazed how quiet it is and Im just trying to figure out whats wrong.
By the way since I got it I also installed next programs:
    MSN messenger
    Yahoo messenger
    LimeWire
    Windows media player
    VLC player
    STUFFIT
    DIVX converter
Can any of those programs cause that working sound? Maybe I just shoul reinstall opeariton system?
    Thanks in advance
    ANTON S.

    SUVORKIN,

I don't think reinstalling the system software will fix your problem. Usually hardware makes the noises and software raises the blood pressure. Are you a former Windows user? Lots of EX-Windows users feel like they need to reinstall their system software often, but it is not necessary with Mac OS X. The same thing with defragmenting the hard drive. It isn't needed with a Mac (unless one is making a huge movie and is constantly saving pieces of it - example) because of HFS+ (Hierarchy File System) and HFAC (Hot File Adaptive Clustering). You may want to look at You do not have to defragment your hard drive because of Hot File Adaptive Clustering. You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #25668 on About disk optimization with Mac OS X.
Developer Connection Document on HFS+ Volume Format says,
"Most files on a disk are rarely, if ever, accessed. Most frequently accessed (hot) files are small. To improve performance of these small, frequently access files, they are moved near the volume's metadata, into the metadata zone. This reduces seek times for most accesses. As files are moved into the metadata zone, they are also defragmented (allocated in a single extent), which further improves performance. This process is known as adaptive hot file clustering.
The relative importance of a frequently used (hot) file is called its temperature. Files with the hottest (largest) temperatures are the ones actually moved into the metadata zone. In Mac OS X version 10.3, a file's temperature is computed as the number of bytes read from the file during the recording period divided by the file's size in bytes. This is a measure of how often the file is read."

  • The sound quality of my speaker suddenly got really poor when playing music or videos.  Sounds like an old AM radio or Sputnik.  Pretty sure it's hardware related but maybe not.  Thoughts on what the problem might be and if it can be repaired?

The batterys the ipods come with are very sensetive somtimes they dont react right to the first couple of charges. Try fully charging it and then leaving it on until its completely drained a few times. If that doesnt work it might be a lemon.

I have tried with a wired USB keyboard and mouse using a single screen. Powered up with option pressed. No change.
    Reset SMC  no change

Run the Apple hardware test to see what it tells you. Run the extended test when prompted, which can take awhile.

It pains me to hear about your experience with the Home Phone Connect.  This device usually works seamlessly and is a great alternative to a landline phone.  It sounds like we've done our fair share of work on your account here.  I'm going to go ahead and send you a Private Message so that we can access your account and review any open tickets for you.  I look forward to speaking with you.
