I have 2 copies of iTunes on my hard drive C: and D:
While exploring the inner workings of this awesome machine, I noticed that I have two complete copies of my iTunes library.
One is in the normal C: drive, and the other is in the D: drive. The D is also labelled "recovery", so does that mean it's an automatic backup?
I am wondering if I should delete the library in D:.
Also, should I consolidate after I delete?

Don't see how it could slow down computer. You don't have to keep both copies. At the very minimum backup any files purchased from iTunes store. Anything imported from CD can be ripped again if needed.

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?

"Ghost" copies of iTunes Library on hard drive?
I was just doing some routine file maintenance when I discovered that I have two directories of music on my hard drive. The first directory is exactly where my iTunes 9.1 preferences is set to store my media libary: Users/Home/Music.
The second directory that I just discovered, is located in Users/Home/Documents. It has a name which appears to be some kind of binary gibberish, about 48 characters long plus dashes. Inside, though, is a nearly complete copy of my iTunes directory. (My iTunes library is 115 GB; this directory is about 100 GB). The "Gibberish" directory has files inside of it that have been modified as of today, so it isn't a totally dead archive or something. The folders inside this document start, seemingly randomly, in the D's (with "Daryl Hall and John Oates"). A quick check shows that only one of the two Hall & Oates songs I purchased from the iTunes store are in this directory. (Both songs are in the other directory). There are probably other such anomalies but I haven't found them yet.
Anyone have any idea what's up here? I'm afraid to delete the gibberish directory and lose part or all of my library. It has an /iTunes sub-directory in it that includes files like iTunes Music Library, iTunes Library Extras, etc. These files have been modified today (minutes ago in fact). In the other "normal" directory, there is what appears to be an identical folder, and the files modified time exactly matches the files in the gibberish directory.

Why do I have 2 copies of everything in my hard drive?
I do NOT like the new Itunes AT ALL.
Since it wouldn't let me downgrade, I had to copy all my music and video files to my external hard drive, delete all of Itunes, and re-install the previous version.
When I went to re-load my backed up files, it put 2 copies of everything in Itunes. I looked at my hard drive, and there are 2 copies of everything.
I'm now manually going though on my hard drive and deleting the duplicates, artist by artist. FUN!
Anyone know why this happened, and how I can avoid it next time I back up my files? (Once I get them back into Itunes, that is.)
I'm only on the Bs. *sigh*

hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

My hard drive crashed and I replaced it. I also switched from ATT to Verizon for my iPhone. Now when I sync with iTunes, only about a tenth of my songs are on the new iPhone. one or two from each album. I still have an iPad with all my songs on it. I subscribed to music match, but when I try on the iPad it wants to match with iTunes and erase a\the music on the iPad. I have no music on iCloud when I sign in. Can anyone help me???
If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows. That will get back your music. I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again. How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent? I have an older machine with Windows XP.
I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?

Have a new PC desktop with 4 hard drives, new c, d and old c, d, My ipad library is in old c, how to get my itune open the right drive, it keeps on open in new c drive. It said my computer is not authorized. I want to move all the old c to the new c drive, or get the itune to open my old c drive when I log in.

MY hard drive crashed and I had to replace it. Now when I try to sync my iPod with iTunes it says that I have to replace the old library (that is lost forever) with the new library to sync. I do not want to lose all the songs on my iPod! What can I do?
Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.
